Before I take the plunge I wondered if anyone had heard about any 8 megapixel or above prosumer DSLR cameras coming out in the next couple of months?
I'm up to spending about £800-£1k on one of these beauties, at the moment torn betwixt the 300D and the D70.
So - any news, anyone?
I think the only announcement most people are expecting is for Canon to announce the 10D replacement at Photokina this year, it might not even happen but if it does I'd expect it to be a £1 1/2k + model.
The alternative is that they announce an inbetween model for the 300D and the 10D to combat the D70 but I doubt it myself.
The Canon D10 has now been out quite a while in digicam years. From what I've read people expect a new model sometime between Sept and Nov in the US. The 300D hasn't been out as long so maybe isn't due a replacement but Canon tend to have something up their sleeves. The D70 is too new to be replaced yet. A Minolta DSLR is due out soon I believe. There plenty of speculation on the net about all this but noone knows for sure. If you want a camera now get one and start taking pictures. You'll spend more on lenses and accessories than the body anyway so just think of it as a starter. Pick the one you think suits you and handle each one first to see which you actually prefer.

cheers for your advice, guys!
Just can't decide between these two babies - will haul my arse down to Jessops this week and have a roadtest. That said, don't have too much of an issue with the 300D - got one at work, for goodness sake!

Personally I'd get the D70, it looks nicer being black.
I think you can get the 300d in black now too, possibly only in the far east but can't be far off here. I would stick with Canon or Nikon if you're starting afresh as they have the largest range of accessories which is what it's all about.
if you're starting from scratch every review I've read says the d70 is a better camera.
obviously if you've got a stack of canon lenses then go with the 300d.

The D70 does get better reviews but the 300D can be got with the lens kit for around £600 with the £100 EOS mag rebate. The Nikon with the lens (which is a better lens than the Canon one) is nearly £900. Is it worth almost £300 more to most people with no prior kit? Not buying extra lens tends to negate many of the SLR plus points so you are buying into a lens system in a lot of ways. Either will take superb pictures as shown by The Perpetual Photo thread.
