View Full Version : New Battlestar Galactica series to air in the UK first?!
According to this (scroll down to the news) (http://www.tvtome.com/BattlestarGalactica_2004/) "Sky One has announced that the world premier of Battlestar Galactica will be shown in the UK this October. The 13 part series will follow on from the 2 part mini series." The series isn't due to start in the US until January!
Anyone heard confirmation of this?

Yeah it's old news. Sky have pumped a lot of money into the production so it will air here 5 months before the US.

Direct from the Sky Website:
New Drama Series
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
Edgier and racier than its predecessor, the new Battlestar Galactica is a complete re-imagining of the 1970s series - upping the ante on the action, adventure and drama that made the original so popular. The groundbreaking story of man versus machine remains, but this time, the Cylon robot is no longer a recognisable enemy… it can move among man.
The series picks up where the highly successful miniseries (broadcast on Sky Movies in February 2004) finished; with the 12 colonies of man virtually destroyed in the climax of a hundred-year war with the Cylon empire. Now, President Roslin (Mary McDonnell) and Commander Adama (Edward James Olmos) gather up the few humans left on the twelve worlds and embark on a journey to find the mythical planet Earth, the supposed thirteenth colony of mankind.
Battlestar Galactica stars Oscar nominees Olmos (Stand And Deliver) and McDonnell (Dances With Wolves), alongside James Callis (Bridget Jones’s Diary), Tricia Helfer (CSI), Jamie Bamber (Band Of Brothers), Katee Sackhoff (Halloween: Resurrection) and Grace Park (Romeo Must Die).
The re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica promises to give new life to the stories and ideas that were at the heart of the original series, speaking to both long-time fans and a new generation of admirers when it launches on Sky One in October.
Mini-Series: Thursday 14 October 21.00 & Friday 15 October 21.05 Sky One
Series: Monday 18 October 20.00 Sky One

very naive for a 30 something year old! They are splashing out the cash (with other investors including SKy1). They are not going to risk losing ratings when it premiers by letting another network show it first!!!
Do they let another US network show Stargate first ? No. So theres the answer ;)

Hmm, watching the trailers and stuff for this on Sky One, I'm now wondering...
Do I bother wasting my time watching this?
Is it drivel?
Will it be another Dune (miniseries)?
;)
P.S. I'm no fan of previous Sky funded fantasy/sci-fi stuff (Dinotopia in particular :gag: ), but I've always like the original Galactica stuff (but not the episodes when they actually reached Earth).
Well I think I might give it a go. I'm not a sci-fi fan per se and I know this will be rather different to the original (that I saw as a kid) but who knows, it could be good!
I also want to see how Sky have spent our subscription money! ;)

TiVo's got it listed as the two parts on separate days and then back to back in two parts on Sky One Mix (not sure of the day), and then again (possibly Saturday?) as one long 3.5 hour film. Obviously just a case of how many adverts they stick in it really and join the two together ;)
Although from what most have said the mini series was total pants? I've not seen it and I assume it's an essential watch to understand the series, though that said if you know the original surely you'd know what's going on anyway?

Camera shake is a result of movement, gravity a compensating cameraman.
As in Space the is no real Gravity The Camera is not realy there and there is no real cameraman the whole camera shake effect just annoys me. It is different though when the camera is attached to a ship it then follows the ships shakes, especially the Galatica when it gets hit. (Boo)
I just hope the Series keeps upthe standards in the original mini series. But if I remember correctly The original series also suffered from a drop in standards.

Be interesting to see if it can succeed where Space Above & Beyond (the show it most closely resembles IMHO) failed. i.e. Actually develop a plot arc and resolve satisfactorily without being cancelled.
I was lamenting the lack of good imaginative telly in any quantity and now i've got Spooks, The Dead Zone and Battlestar all on AT THE SAME TIME on the same day!!!

I really liked the episode last night, and can't wait for the one tonight.
Don't think there's any link to the original story though - the older models were put in there for nostalia as far as I can tell, and I'm guessing they're going with the old fighters for the same reason - plus the storyline that they can't use the up-to-date weaponry because of 'infection' by the cyclon computers.
Really liked the action sequences, and I thought a lot of the scipt was pretty clever - eg, when the damaged craft was going to pick up a few choice survivors, you felt certain it would fall into the cliche of Baltar nicking the old woman's ticket - but no.
I just got confused trying to work out how it related to the original series with the old fighter versions mixed in with the new and the references to the old cylon models.
Story-wise it doesn't relate at all. They're really just making refferences to the old series almost as in in-joke for existing fans. It's a remake and doesn't fit with the timeline of the old series.

First part seemed okay. Seems to be a worthy "re-imagining" of the show. Same rough idea and even little bits of similarity to the original (the design of the Galactica, the fighters, etc).
The CGI is pants though. Low-budget Babylon 5 style obvious CGI kind of stuff (I'm no B5 fan). I just hope the series budget is better and they don't resort to B5 style of endless "all talk" scenes in cheap sets and then cut to short bursts of CGI scenes that seem disjointed and more about showing off CGI effects than telling the story.
Also did anyone else find the sound effects to be lacking during the CGI scenes?
I am spoilt by the quality of Paramount's CGI and models on Star Trek however ;), but I do like the way it's become routine enough for them not to show off all the time but just use it as part of the plot, and at least their CGI ships are hard to distinguish from models.
And as for...
Starbuck being a girl
Hmm... :nono: ;)
Though the cigar was a nice touch.
Anyway, it was good enough for me to want to watch the next part, so that's a good thing :D

No. I think the point there is that the are aiming for a more realistic feel to it, (there being no sound in space and all that). I do find that to be a refreshing change to the usual zips, zaps and bangs from the likes of StarWars etc.
However, I wasn't too impressed with the sound mixing, particularly the dialogue. I found myself thinking "What did he/she say ?" too often.
I also thought it was fairly clear that the Galactica and the old star fighters are immune to the cylon computer interferance thing. Not a bad idea I suppose to leverage the Old Skool into the new.
So overall, thumbs up from me. Will be watching tonight for sure.

Deaks.
It "tries" to have some continuity, though, doesn't it? And I liked the conceit of making the newer vipers prone to Cylon interference, so that they have to use the "classic" model.
It's only really paying "homage" to the old series by saying in the new continuety that there was a war years ago and that back then the cylons looked like tin-cans. Seeing as in the original series the colonies were destroyed there can't be any form of continuety where the colonies suddenly exist again.

Stargate's rubbish.
The reason the new BG is so good is because it avoids many SF pitfalls. Stargate doesn't really do that. It's nothing like as dark and gritty as the new BG either.

TV Space should be exciting, i want to hear noisy dooo dooodooo doooo lasers!!!!!!! :(
It may be a little bit more realistic but there are still some sound effects going on during the space scenes making it a badly done half job. Shall be pressing mute in the space scenes and doing my own sound  doo doo :dork:
I was born in '75 so I'm not sure which series of BG I saw as kid - was probably the "Galactia 80" thing as I remember flying motorbikes and invisible planes and the like! but then I might be mixing it up with "Chips" and "Wonder Woman"!
I do remember really liking "Battlestar Galatica" as a nipper though! (except I never could get my head around the fact that Face in "The A-Team" never stopped that Cylon man! - I think I was an overprotected child!!)
I don't want to look at the original again on dvd as it's probably complete rubbish! Some things are better left to memory methinks, which is why the new and re-imagined BG seems so fresh. 'Apollo' is so easy on the eye too! ;)
OT: anephric, I've never seen an episode of "Stargate SG-1" (saw the original movie 10 years ago mind) just thought I'd give "Stargate Atlantis" a go as it's an all new show.
Do you have a cliffnotes version of the "many SF pitfalls" and how the new BG avoids them? What stuck me most about the first part of the miniseries was how well drawn the characters are and how there is great backstory and relationship history there. Seems to me it's what the Star Wars prequels should have been like!

Exactly that: it treats its scenario with absolute seriousness and isn't given to "easy" SF or fantasy plot dropouts like having geeky characters, lame in-jokes (Buffy and X-Files style), techno-babble, deus ex machinae etc.
I just felt it took a distinctly ungeneric approach to what could have been a lame campfest. Most notably how well, as you say, it treats its characters and how it doesn't patronise the audience by having them make easy decisions and having ersatz reconciliations (such as the Starbuck/Tye confrontation near the end: I was fearing cheesiness and none came).
All the characters were flawed, some quite severely. It was even possible to sympathise with Baltar (well, I did). :suspect:

I was born in 73 and remember the original well enough. It was repeated endlessly anyway. Last repeats were not that long ago either I think.
I barely watched the updated ones where they reached Earth. Don't know why. Maybe they just weren't repeated so much.
The originals, though dated and a little cheesy now, are still worth a watch. The production values aren't too bad (it's not like wobbly set Dr.Who after all ;)), and the galactica model does look cool (and obviously doesn't look like CGI ;)).
It was a show much like Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, and cheesy as that was too, I still enjoy it.
