View Full Version : Can I use TV as centre speaker
Ive just ordered a toshiba 56who8b. Now while this has a built in 5.1 decoder i have a stand alone dd/dts amp and speakers which I intend to use. However, it would be nice to use the Tvs speakers as the centre speakers for
the amp.
The question is could I make up a lead phono to SCART to take the centre channel from the amp and feed it into the TV SCART hence achieving my desired aim.
As ever it depends. If the amp outputs 'pre-outs' for the centre channel, then yes you could connect this pre-out to the correct scart pin(s) and get the sound outputting on the TV, however you will not get any picture, so you will have to create a lead that carries the single phono output of the centre pre-out and also the required picture signal from elsewhere to get the complete package. In other words, you could use a standard SCART-SCART cable and 're-route' the audio lines at the DVD player end to a phono plug.
Another way of doing it is if the TV can accept speaker-level inputs at all. If so, you may be able to wire the centre speaker terminal of the amp to the TV, BUT be VERY careful before you attempt this - read the manual of the TV and make sure it can handle speaker-level input or you risk blowing the speakers up on it.
Surely, he could use the biult in 5.1 decoder to extract the centre channel. I don't know about the setup of this model but if it has the option to wire extrenal speakers, just tell the TV that you have done so and the TV should only play the centre channel.
Alternatively, it might have a setting for connecting an external amp for the front two channels. Same thing apllies in this case, tell the TV that you have connected an external amp but don't connect it and the TV should only play the centre channel.
