I am looking for some advice on which complete home cinema package to buy. Small speakers are a must. I have seen systems advertised from Sony and Panasonic, are these the best to go for or are there alternatives. I have a budget of around £600.

Try the Pioneer NSDV-55.
It's got small speakers, and superb sound.
All the amplification is dealt with in the sub woofer, which can be 12 foot from the head unit.
Got mine from upgrade heaven via the forums offer.
More than happy with it.

If you like the look of the sony ones, how about the new pioneer DCS100, plus Justin(Upgrade Heaven) has it on offer at the moment. Look in the Bargain forum for November offers.

Get the Pioneer NSDV55. It's luvverly :)

It's just been discontinued and replaced by the NSDV77/88 so you'll be able to get it cheap. I've seen vanilla unmodded NSDV55s for as little as £399 in the last week or so (there's an ad in this month's What TV&Video, can't remember the supplier though).

I recommend going for a separates system. I have the Pioneer NS-DV55 and find that it is aimed as a entry level system. Also it stated that the subwoofer is a powered subwoofer but i have a feeling that it could be passive.

With £600 I'd imagine it'd be difficult to get a seperates system of DVD player, 6 channel amp, four satellites, a centre speaker and a subwoofer that beats the performance of the Pioneer...

!! Unless you are comparing it to the likes of a Marantz SR4100 and DV4200OSE, then for the same money theres nothing to touch it. And it IS a active sub, make sure you have it set up right, as I`ve never heard anyone call it a "entry" system. You listened to one of the RS kenwood packs, or a Sony DAVS300/500?

Cheers for the replies guys - like Adventure 2 I am also looking to upgrade my pitiful DVD to a new system but do not have either the funds or knowledge to put together a seperate system. I also have a girlfriend that is insisting that the system should be as discrete as possible (new house and all) and have been looking at the Pioneer and Sony range.

Justin - Which of the "big" mainstream manufacturers (Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic et al) would you recommend as having the best general quality and performance, and out of those, which of the range would you recommend?

I've looked at a coupel of review sites - Home Cinema Choice etc - but am having difficulty trying to find any comprehensive comparisons. My budget will be between £600 to £800
Thanks:confused:

Many thanks to all of you for your help. It looks like the Pioneer is the one to shop around for . Just need to sort the TV now.:)

Sony pascal 505 £250
Sheerwood RVD6095 £200
Any cheap DVD player £150

I have heard the above system and can easily say that the performance can beat the Pioneer NS-DV 55 sonically and has beautiful LFE.

Sorry to disagree with you, but I`ve heard the RS systems, and we stock the Sony pascal 505, and they sound god damn awfull even on a half decent amp. Something the RVD6095 is not:(

My money would be on:

Marantz SR4200 £270
Mission C6 pack £250-£300
Pioneer Dv340 £150

And that will blow the above system away for the sake of a few sqid difference. You`re the only person I`m aware of to state the NSDV55 is not that good... I would be checking its setup correctly if you say the above system sounds better!
