View Full Version : Anyone getting the MK2 Truffaut box set(s)?

After the fiasco that was the Jeunet & Caro box set, I'm reluctant to get the first volume of this set, despite that is says on both Amazon and MK2 websites "Version Anglaise sur l'intégralité du programme (menu, film, complément,etc...)," until I know for sure.

Anyone here have it ordered? What are the chances of it actually being release tomorrow?!

I've got the 400 coups etc box set on order at amazon.fr.
It's already been delayed a month, so I'm not going to bet my house on it coming out tomorrow.
The films in the set are, I believe,, the same as those available individually, so the specs on those can be seen by looking at www.musicbox.fr for example (though their website seems to be down this morning)

All the individual discs come with EN sub-titles (at least that's what it says on the packaging) and whe I contacted MK2 themselves a couple of months back, they confirmed that all the films in the three sets came with EN sub-titles.

...alright... the last time I'll ever do this, so pay attention children...

The first Truffaut 'set' to come out (at least a year ago!) includes the following movies (all of which I own, so I can vouch for their specs):

* Jules et Jim

* La Peau douce

* Les deux Anglaises et le Continent (restored to its original length)

* Le dernier Métro

* La Femme d'à côté

All of these movies feature mono soundtracks, anamorphic transfers (where applicable, and, yes! the French do 'anamorphise' 1.66:1 films), and - most important of all for French-impaired viewers - English subtitles for the entire 'program, to wit: the feature, the commentary, the interviews, etc.

Note that à la page still lists this set as being available:

http://www.alapage.com/mx/?id=27601998794813&donnee_appel=ALAPAGE&tp=F&type=4&VID_NUMERO=489448&devise=&fulltext=dernier+m%26eacute%3Btro&sv=X_L

As for the second ('Antoine Doinel') - and third (two thrillers) - Truffaut 'sets', your guess re: English subs or no subs? is as good as mine.

FWIW, I placed an order for the AD set a month ago, which was first accepted and subsequently canceled ... last Friday I again placed an order, which hasn't been canceled (yet), so perhaps this time...

Thanks Hendrik - that's a good reply. There seems to be a confusing situation over the first set - some places list it as being already out (as you confirm) yet Amazon.fr list it as being released tomorrow... a re-release I suppose?

Anyways, sounds like it will be worth the plunge, at least for the first set. Let's hope the second and third also have les Anglais...

OK, with apologies for my French, here is the Email I send to MK2 and their reply...(This is already on the Forums somewhere but I seem to recall it's not under a "Truffaut" thread)

HELLO
> Monsieur/Madame,
>
> Premièrment, je présenter mon excuses pour les mauvais français (je suis Gallois).
>IT'S AS GOOD AS MY ENGLISH!!!
> Je suis intéressé à-propos les trois volumes des films de Truffaut, mais avant j'achete les, j'ai deux questions:
>
> - Je crois pour le premier volume ("Les Femmes et L'Amour") tous les films avais les sous-titres en anglais. C'est vrai?
> RIGHT! FILM AND BONUS
> - Pour les autres ("Les Polars" et "Les Aventures d'Antoine Doinel"), je ne pas trouvé l'information à-propos le existence de les sous-titres en anglais. Puis vous confirmé "oui" ou "non" s'il vous plait?

> THE FILM AND THE SHORT FILM ARE SUBTITLED? BUT NOT THE BONUS!

> Veuillez crois, Monsieur/Madame, à l'assurance de ma considération distinguée.

Just to confuse matters even further :) , I would not be at all surprised to see the MK2 Truffaut discs released in the UK by Artificial Eye.

AE have previously released a number of Truffaut films on VHS, and obviously have a good relationship with MK2, having licensed their Kieslowski "Three Colours Trilogy".

This is, of course, pure speculation which still leaves the question of whether AE would go to the trouble of creating English subtitles for the extras on the later MK2 discs ("400 Blows" etc).

In the meantime it might be worth emailing to AE so they can see that there would be a demand for these titles

;)

Just to add to Hendrik's and StuNew's postings, I also emailed mk2 (and posted their response in the same thread as StuNew). The first box set (containing Jules et Jim etc) has English subs for the entire disk contents (including commentaries); indeed, I have this set and can confirm this. As far as I remember, the other 2 box sets have English subs for the films (both main and shorts) but no subs for the other additional contents. I guess we'll find out for sure over the next few days!

More news on the other two sets as I have them in my hands...

I can confirm (at least from what it says on the packaging) the following:

- Domicile Conjugal, L'amour en Fuite, Tirez sur le Pianiste, Vivement Dimanche!

have EN sub-titles on the film.

- Les 400 Coups et Baisers Volés

have EN sub-titles on the film and the short films (Les Mistons and Antoine et Colette).

They don't specify that anything of the extras have EN subs so I suppose, no.

There is also nothing to indicate that the extra disc with the documentary of Serge Le Péron has EN subs.

BTW: I also received a free CD of "Ciné Hits volume 1" with stuff such as: Ben Hur, Dr. No, Lawrence of Arabia, Zorba the Greek, Star Wars etc.

Grrr.... still waiting for mine, even though it shipped on the 7th. Is it me, or is the Post Office slow at the moment?
Anyway, maybe tomorrow...

My copy of the first box set (<i>Jules et Jim</i> etc.) arrived today - was posted on the 7th from Amazon.fr

My Antoine Doinel set arrived yesterday. Nice box containing four disks plus a single disk in a small cd-type cover for the bonus disk - a documentary on J-P Leaud.

Subtitles for the films and the short films ( I watched Les Mistons ) but none offered for the extras. I could pretty much understand the introduction to Les Mistons and the screen tests for the youngsters in 400 coups showed the character of the young J-P Leaud whether you understood or not.

I received the last 2 boxsets (Doinel and Polars) this am. Haven't looked at them in detail yet, but I can confirm that the films HAVE English subs, but the extras don't (unlike the first set). The Doinel box is almost the same as the first set, but the Polars duo box, although similar in style, is a slightly cheaper, less solid affair.

Looking forward to a long, long Truffaut weekend soon!

Ha! 1.33am exactly! :D

I was going to start watching them yesterday, but the arrival of Bela Lugosi's White Zombie held an irresistible sway over me (it's his scary eyes I guess) and I watched that instead.

So I think the weekend will be set aside for M. Doinel

Could someone who has the Doinel and Polars box sets please confirm whether or not <i>Les 400 coups</i> and <i>Tirez sur le pianiste</i> are in 2.35:1 as they should be?

I ask as Amazon.fr lists both DVDs as "pan and scan" and "full screen format". I can't believe that MK2 would do this, but I'd like confirmation before I spend my money.

I have the "Women and love" box set and can confirm that <i>Jules et Jim</i> is 2.35:1, the other four 1.66:1, all anamorphic. (Just in case anyone needs to know.)

..."TIREZ" is indeed anamorphic 2.35:1, while "VIVEMENT" is anamorphic 1.66:1...

...haven't received the AD set yet...

I have all three boxed sets and they are all in their correct AR.
<i>Les 400 coups, Antoine et Colette</i> and <i>Tirez sur le pianiste</i> are in 2.35:1 All are anamorphic as well (except for Les Mistons of course which was shot in Academy ratio.

Great stuff. I got mine from Cinestore and it took them exactly 7 days from the order to delivery in New York (Sunday to Saturday).

I really love both the movies and the DVDs themselves. All three boxed sets are treasures.

I think it can now be established as a general rule that amazon.fr get their technical specs wrong whenever possible. Which is not very bright of them really, as it's doubts about that kind of thing that can often nip an impulse buy in the bud.

I have the Antoine Doinel set, and it is indeed a wonderful thing. So far I've watched Les Mistons, 400 coups, Antoine et Colette and a whole bunch of extras - and even though my french is pretty rusty I got quite a bit out of the (unsubtitled) interviews with Truffaut and Leaud.

And since I'd only seen the latter two movies on tv or video, I'm sure this is the first time I've seen them in such lovely widescreen.

Thanks, everyone. Considering the obvious care that has gone into the first boxset, I didn't think MK2 would make such an elementary error as to get the aspect ratio wrong!

Although both sets 1 & 2 contain five DVDs, #2 is considerably cheaper than #1 on Amazon.fr at the moment! (If I've done my sums right, #2 & #3 can be had for just over £50 in total, plus postage.)

It's true, boxes two and three are much cheaper per DVD than box 1 was.

The 3 colors box is very cheap also, but it has been postponned yet again. The good news is that the individual DVDs are out as of today, so it won't be long. I'm hoping someone will be able to tell us when it comes out if the mythical fourth Kieslowski docu. DVD exists.

About the Truffaut extras: some are really amazing. I've checked out so far the 400 Blows auditions (you really see just how much of J-P Leaud is in that character) the '68 Cannes film fest on the Stolen Kisses disk (look for Roman Polanski) the talk show clip from Vivement Dimanche! (again Polanski is there to voice his dismay about how terible things must have been for the sexually frustrated Hitchcock). Amazing stuff, all of it.

OK, time to stop typing and go back to watching...

Not quite - they've billed me in Euros and it comes to £59.89 including standard postage to the UK. At just over £8 a DVD that's still very good value!
