I am not name dropping ;), but my brother worked on the Harry Potter Movie (and he is doing the 2nd at the moment), and during a talk with him he mentioned during a chat with Chris Columbus they were discussing the length of the film and what he (the director) wanted to do. Apparently he had an idea for a different start to the book which was filmed, but it was too graphic for the childrens rating and anyway the "suits" didn't want too much of a change from the book. But Chris Columbus did mention that this prologue, and other things that were cut (for length) are on the cards for the DVD release.
Maybe this could be a case where the initial DVD release is the most complete Special Edition to own, and not 2 or 3 releases in the future.
