Hi all,

We have a small network here at work, just used to share files and printers really. One of the pc's is a vehicle tracking system, which we just got upgraded yesterday. The tracker pc was not on the network before yesterday, but it now needs a static IP address so has been connected to the network.

I seem to be able to access all the other pc’s from the tracker pc, but not the other way round. I can see it on the network but whenever I try and access the tracker I am told:

‘\\xxxxxxxx is not accessible.

No permission to access resource.’

Can anyone help me to be able to access the pc and allow me to share the printer?

Many thanks

what OS is the new pc, you may need an account if its XP to allow others to access it?

How about the simple and blindingly obvious stuff that no one - and i mean no one - ever thinks about first? (Not an insult, BTW)

Have you made the resources on that PC shareable? If it is an XP machine, is the Firewall turned on?

The new PC is XP Pro

The other PC's are

1x Win 98
1x Win ME
2x Win XP Home

There is a good mix of operating systems there and they all seem to be be able to access each other perfectly easily. I did introduce the previous PC that was upgraded (win 2000) to the network and I was able to access the new pc no probs???

No insult Fireclown, I am no XP expert, how do I turn the firewall off so I can see if this is the problem?

Go
START|Control Panel
Select Network Connections
Right Click on Lan Connection and select Properties
In Window that opens, select ADVANCED tab at the top
Internet Connection Firewall is in here....the check box should be blank

Right guys, I finally got a step further today.

I set myself up as a new user on the Win98 pc. I then added that user to the new WinXPPro PC and I am now able to access the new PC!

Only problem is, I found that the new Dell printer will not work with Win 98 :(

Is it still possible to use the printer with the Win 98 pc somehow or am I looking at an OS upgrade?

Another prob with the user I cant seem to get my email. I keep getting prompted for my password, even though it is correct. Any ideas why this might be happening? COuld it be connected to the fact that I think I lost all my cookies? (I had to re-log in to the DVD Forums)

At least I seem to be part of the way there, but can anyone help me solve my other problems please?

Ok im beng a bit dense and was just typing in the wrong password I think. I have managed to remeber 2 of the 5 accounts I use!

The question still stands about the printer though. Is it possible for me to share it with the Win98machine, through the WinXPpro machine, even thought the printer is not compatible with Win98?

Don't think so, TBH. AFAIR, even with a networked printer, you still need drivers on the client pc (the 98 one in this case).

You could try looking for compatible drivers, but it would probably be a wild goose change.
