Does anyone know anything about this boxset? I skimmed passed in whilst i was in Hong Kong recently but didn't get any details of it

All I know is that it consists of 5 dvds (dunno which ghilbi titles though), comes in a fold out light blue cardboard case, and is HK$280 (approx £25). I Don't even know if its region 0, 2 (jap), or 3

I've told my sister (who works out there) to get me one when she comes back in the new year and she has told me that its all japanese with english subs. I tried looking everywhere on the net for it with no results.

any ideas?

you 100% sure kanedaa?

It was beind sold in proper anime stores not dodgy shops (trust me - I know where they are out there ;) )

The case looked genuine (not no dodgy printout but high quality thick card and clear plastic dvd holders like the x files case) and if it was bootleg, I'd doubt it would sale for HK$280

Could have been VCDs.

nah, definitely dvd's

I saw the lain and cowboy bebop vcd boxsets and they were completely different in cd size cardboard cases, and they were at the other side (vcd section :D) of the shop

I don't think any one person can ever be 100% sure unless they have talked to the copyright holder, the distributor and the retailer personally and had confirmation from every party that it is indeed legit, but i'm about as sure as I can be with the following in mind.

Here are the problems with Ghibli product....

Miyazaki is EXTREMELY careful with how his films are released. After a botch job on Nausicaa in the US he witheld rights for years until finally giving in to Disney, and he is probably happy his works aren't getting decent distribution worldwide (indeed he has been known to say his films are in Japanese and are for Japanese people)...

there are a tonne of bootlegged product on the market, including boxsets which Ghibli would never allow. Think about it, even at HK prices £25 is a tad cheap for 5 films when they're roughly £35 each in Japan, and would be £15 each elsewhere! HK is cheap, but not THAT cheap!

Nausicaa.net (http://www.nausicaa.net) has a comprehensive listing of legit Ghibli products, its not listed

A certain UK supplier got these or similar products in, they didn't stay available for long once the light had been seen.

US shops that sell these sets offer comments along the lines of what Future Entertainment seem to dish out.

A few interesting links for you to peruse and make up your own mind (although finding out the publisher of this set will answer your question pretty quickly!).

Anime boots have some quite gorgeous looking packaging. Did it look anything like this?

From my understanding. All Miyazaki DVDs sold in Hong Kong are dodgy pirates...
Look like any of these culprits...

As most people will say, if its got chinese and english subtitles then its a bootleg, and all the above are bootlegs, also a giveaway most of the time is the nice printed pics on the dvds themselves (most of the R2s ive seen and the one i own have simple prints and very few colours) the same goes with alot of anime and game bootleg soundtracks.

I think a bootleg FAQ is in need of being made for the forums.

Argh! yeh, it did look something like (A), @@@@! I'd never thought I would get caught out by a bootleg but you're not wrong, they look pro with a capital P!

Yeah I've seen these in HK and the ghibli stuff is just the tip of the iceberg. I am surprised that they have english subs on them though as all the examples I have seen including VCDs are either dubbed in cantonese or have chinese subs only.

I would assume it's to satisfy all the gwailo  The fact that they've included the english subs mean they can off load more copies than they could with just chinese subs. The VCDs with chinese subs would be legit... but then again not all VCDs with chinese subs are legit... oooer I'm going round in circles. I'll stop it here :D - I'm going dizzy ;)

There was a post about this set on the Miyazaki mailing list recently. One of the subscribers was chatting to Jonathan Ross at the recent Barbican screenings and had the pleasure of informing him that the DVD set he was banging on about was a bootleg ;-)

I've seen a couple of the discs from this collection and the subtitles are laughably bad. Easily the worst subtitles I've seen on any disc, anywhere.

Watch out also for a pirate box set of Miyazaki's "Future Boy Conan" TV series - this was doing on the rounds on Ebay until a couple of months ago.
