As per title, anyone going? I am, as I'm down there for a training course. Any details I should know? There is a site for it, but it seems less than functional at the moment :brickwall

Don't forget to take some ear-plugs. Anyone taking a video camera?

Your drivers list misses Coulthard, Monytoya and Badoer.

I'll prob take my digi still camera...

Don't forget to take some ear-plugs.

Because official merchandise ones will set you back at least a tenner!

I prefer to just let my ears bleed instead.

Gavin

Surely they won't be allowed to go full tilt, 200mph?

paulsaz
05-07-2004, 08:52
seriously doubt it, but they're still bleeding noisy.

Samiad
05-07-2004, 09:32
They're damned noisy at 0mph!

Nick[Blarg]
05-07-2004, 09:43
I think that they have to abide by speed limits so it was 30mph all the way round!

I can just see the thread on wednesday morning.....

"F1 Drivers in Speed Camera bonanza"

Do they have to pay the congestion charge?

It'll be out of hours so probably not.

I can't believe they're selling tickets for it though :oh-hum:.

I don't think they'll be racing mate! :D ;)

Apparently they have to do a run up and down the route in a 'normal' car before their flying lap to check it out...and of course put on more of a show.

So for a bit of PR, one of the guys who organised the event is also the producer (or something) of the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang stage show...therefore one of the drivers will be going up/down Regent Street in Chitty!!

Please let it be JPM!

I work in Holborn so I'll be popping along with my digital camera!!

Eh!! Where did you read that?

Gavin

It's free isn't it? Who said anything about selling tickets?

DeadKenny
05-07-2004, 13:52
Actually, you're right, at least according to the official site. It was one of the presenters on ITV's F1 yesterday that mislead me as they were doing a competition or something to win a ticket to tomorrows F1 in London.

Strange as why would you need to win a ticket if it's free anyway? :?:

Gavin

Maybe you get to go into the pit lane and meet the drivers or something....

Yeah, that rings a bell, I think it was a VIP thing, meet the drivers, dinner? etc..

Perhaps it'll be a pre-arranged race...but the last time that happened Mansell got a bit enthusiastic and flipped his two seater (with a member of the public in the car!)!

Have had a look at the schedules and can't see it.

Sky News or Sky Sports News may feature some coverage. :)

ac
06-07-2004, 04:47
Suspect they'll use it in the build up to the race on Sunday, probably instead of a 'meet the team' feature or something.

London Tonight will be covering it (don't know to what extent), will probably have a mention on BBC/ITV main new programmes as well.

The VIP tickets thing refers to the ticket-winner being allowed to watch the thing from someone's balcony, above all the people (including me) gathered in the street.

Radio 5 said this morning that the organisers were hoping for a crowd of around the 100,000 mark.

A.

100,000!! Crikey!

Any updates on which channel this may be on? No doubt it'll be shown on ITV's British GP show, but seeing as I will be there I won't be able to watch ITV's coverage (which is a blessing in disguise).

Anyone know if it's going to be on any terrestrial or freeview channels? (for those without sky or cable)

DeadKenny

The news channels have had very little on it. Sky News Active is definitely doing edited replays though which you can watch full screen and it repeats (it's probably about 10 minutes worth). I don't know how long they'll run it for but you get to see each of the drivers doing a full "run".

Maybe it'll be downloadable. I'm sure some people will record it ;)

Can't see anything on Freeview even on the BBC interactive stuff.

Stacks of people there. Too many to see anything when I had a quick look (or rather didn't). There were some people at some scary height on window ledges for vantage points.

I have just returned from Regent Street. An amazing evening... There were 100,000-plus people there, surely. It was nigh impossible to see a damned thing. It was thrilling to hear the howl of those engines bouncing off the buildings, though. I was in Piccadilly, edging ever closer to the front. At the end, I got close to the drivers tent and saw Button, Montoya, Coulthard, Da Matta and Badoer. Eddie Jordan and Paul Stoddart walked passed. Then, the cars (in various stages of dismantlement) were wheeled past. Total chaos: it was like being at an over-crowded rock concert, with cops in front of me yelling "Get back! Get back!", and people pressing me forward into the barrier. An awesome evening in many ways, but I can't help feeling that people watching the telly got a better view!

Nah, they don't get to see (and feel) a burnout from a few meters away :D (plus we get to see it on TV after anyway).

Nah, they don't get to see (and feel) a burnout from a few meters away :D (plus we get to see it on TV after anyway). True. I have looked at the footage on Sky News Active. I found it quite moving, to be honest: all those people turning out for F1. The drivers were overwhelmed too, palpably. Each one commented on the enthusiasm of the crowd - a bit like a royal wedding of yesteryear. :D I would love to see a street race in London - but am aware that this evening's event was there simply to promote Silverstone. But the noise in the streets... the noise...

Awesome.

Samiad

Just got back from London - couldnt see a thing, but oh well.
BBC quoted there to be 500,000 people.

All the tube stations went crazy and 5 or 6 in the area were closed off. I had to walk to get out the area for about an hour.
Id love to see a grand prix in London - anyway, heres the bbc story on it

It was awsome to hear them down Regent Street, although I didn't see a thing as it was 10 poeple deep where ever you went! Although I managed to watch some of it on a big TV screen down Piccadilly.

Some good pictures here:

Given that half of central London would need to be shut down for 3 days in a row, not likely. Unless they can find a route that minimises disruption. The problem is any route not only closes the roads it goes down but causes major disruption on all the intersecting roads. It's not so bad for the short few hours during royal events on Sundays etc, but for an entire weekend including work hours on a Friday!!... doubt it.

It would be fantastic though if they could find a way. I wonder how they'd ticket it though as there would be a risk of ending up with far less income than they'd get from Silverstone because many would find free places to view it.

Absolutely LOADS of photos (188 in fact) here (http://www.f1racing.net/en/gallery.php?catID=1414).

I'm another one who'd love to see a GP in London but not sure how it could happen, although Ken Livingstone seems to think it would be possible so I don't know. Apparently he has already proposed an early draft to Ecclestone for a route around Hyde Park and Park Lane - link (http://www.planet-f1.com/news/story_16380.shtml).

kcxdev - Cheers for the vids. Looked like a great atmosphere, and you could hear how load it was just from the vids!!

Yeh the Ferrari especially was well loud, was mad being just a couple metres away.

Ken Livingstone has been quoted as saying he is absolutely serious about doing it and has already discussed it with Bernie Ecclestone. A 2007 date has been discussed.

I imagine they'd start off as the European GP for that year and maybe move it to British GP the following year. I don't think that closing the streets would be a problem, it'd cause problems for people who would want to drive there but tough luck I'd say. They'd only need to close the track for qualifying and practice as well as the race itself but I think the benifits far outweigh the sacrafices

The Bear

kcxdev - That's an old speculatitive picture and has nothing to do with any proposal put forward as yet.
