Brazil
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
The Last Temptation of Christ
Dead Ringers
Diva
Ran
Do The Right Thing
Dressed to Kill
Mona Lisa
Repo Man
The Thing
Sid and Nancy
This is Spinal Tap
Withnail and I

...but the film that captures the 80s the best is Scarface. Despite being little more than Barry-Lyndon-with-guns, it completely captures the decade in which it was made better than any other film I've ever seen.

Raging Bull, Cruising, The Great Rock And Roll Swindle, Heaven's Gate, Bronco Billy, The Falls, Bad Timing, The Long Riders, Stardust Memories, Modern Romance, The Shining, Dressed To Kill, Used Cars, Blow Out, Absence Of Malice, Prince Of The City, Excalibur, The Long Good Friday (strictly speaking 1979, but not shown till 1980), Divine Madness, All The Marbles, Body Heat, Southern Comfort, The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Thing, ET, Blade Runner, Eureka, King Of Comedy, The Border, Conan The Barbarian, Local Hero, Tootsie, The Right Stuff, The Verdict, Videodrome, Scarface, Honkytonk Man, Come Back The Five And Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean, The Ploughman's Lunch, The Draughtsman's Contract, Monty Python's Meaning Of Life, The Dead Zone, The Evil Dead, Tightrope - and that's only the English language, Anglo/American films from the first few years.... So not bad at all IMO.

Well I'd have to go with the "teen" comedies, mostly from John Hughes:

The Breakfast Club
Pretty In Pink
Some Kind Of Wonderful
St Elmos Fire
Weird Science
Raging Bull
Robocop

Plus most the others already mentioned here!!!!

Lots of great movies listed above, I never realised how many of my favourites come from this era!.

It's a badly tarnished franchise, but Highlander is a notable would-be classic from the 80's (irrepairably devalued by its sequels of course). I'd list Lambert's other worthwhile film here too:- Subway, even though it's full of 80's anachronisms which are either annoying or endearing depending on your mood.

De Niro appeared in a handful of superb films in this decade and his more serious efforts have already been suggested, but I've always admired Midnight Run aswell.

Lost Boys seemed like a classic at the time, but it isn't half as enjoyable these days (after removing the rose-tinted spectacles that is). I'd definitely vouch for Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop though because IMO they remain Eddie Murphy's best two films.
