Do these record in widescreen (16:9) or 4:3 only? If the input is 16:9 of course.

I guess there's no chance that this plays divx/xvid?

CAUTION???? Wasn't / isn't the 5001 model flawed with overheating problems? I notice they have put a "b" at the end of the product code - do you think they have been corrected for clearance? The new model is of course out as well - the 5005 (I think SVP are doing the new model - yes they are (true bob the builder sytle!))
I have everything to worry about - I'm on my 2nd Philips!!!

For those that may be interested I also believe that this model has a DV terminal on it as well. Not bad for £150 odd.
that does seem a good price, esp since as creepster mentioned that it has a firewire port, I'll have a search online for a few reviews.
well just looked at a few reviews, does not bode well, so think I'll give this one a miss and go for the JVC I've been looking to get all along.

if you go for the liteon-5005 their might be a firmwire update which will allow it to read divx\xvid, hopefully soon.

optimism bubble burst :brickwall
Dear Madam/Sir,
Thanks for contacting LiteOn Customer Service.
The 5005 can't support the DIVX. Please don't open the case of the device, this will make your warranty void.

I read the review of the 5005 in Home Cinema Choice magazine - and they commented on it's lack of RGB or SVideo input or outputs and marked it down accordingly - but the one I've just seen in my local Currys had both an SVideo input AND output, even though it's a 5001. Odd that the older model has better specs?
If someone has bought one, can they confirm Svideo input/output - as this would be right up my street, as I can partner it with a Sky+ (which has an svideo output) and my TV has trouble with RGB so I tend to use SVideo (and I have an SVHS deck).
Does it support just +R, or -R too? Does it have the audiocd recording features, and VCD and SVCD abilities of the 5005?

Spidey - the photos in the magazine clearly show no SVideo inputs or outputs - the link you've posted shows a 5005 that has no SCART sockets - the machine in my local Currys has two SCARTS, plus SVideo inputs and outputs.
Very odd - how many versions of these are there?

The review site states that review model supplied by Liteon-America. US equipment doesn't have SCART sockets. Full connection details can be seen in pdf manual available from Liteon http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/download.htm
As per the european model manual, 2 scarts but neither are RGB, only composite. But quite impressive at the price that it is dual format, writing to both + and - formats. Plenty of recorders several multiples of the price that don't do that.

It seems the model being sold by Dixons/Currys/Comet is the 5001 (or a version of it - the 5001 doesn't seem to have SVideo ports from what I can see on Liteon's site) - which is +R/+RW only, although, from what I've read, the 5001 and 5005 are mechanically and electronically identical - a firmware to upgrade a 5001 to 5005 could be possible (and Liteon drop hints on their forums that something may be on the way) - giving you -R/-RW and CD-R and CD-RW compatibility.
I wonder if the upgrade could also add RGB compatibility?
Also, the drive mechanism is one of their PC drives - so in theory - could be replaced with a dual layer drive.....
Which is nice :D
Am I talking myself into this, or what?
