Greece win!!!!!

Amazing result and well done to them. There's a message here for the overpaid "stars" of England, Italy, France and Spain...

All over, the French go out and this is the biggest shock so far in a tournament full of shocks.

So just who is going to win this

Lovely. Made me chuckle after last night's disappointment.

Not really that surprising though. France were lucky against England and Croatia, and they beat the worst team in the competition in Switzerland.

Odd. When the Welsh/Scots/Irish take pleasure at England going out (of which I was not one I might add!) we're told we should support England and those that don't are 'jealous'. Now France go out, what's your excuse for rejoicing? Is that jealousy?

As for tonights game, France can't really moan because they didn't play at all. That said the attitude and antics of the Greeks hardly makes me pleased to see them in the next round :(

My excuse is that I had a £1 bet on Greece to win 1-0 @ 16/1. And £1 on Michael Owen @ 5-1. Shame about the 10 I lost really. And yes, I will spend it all at once :D .

Was the France vs England game all over again. Only this time the opposing team didn't give the French a win.

So the Greeks have spanked Portugal, drawn with Spain, and now spanked the French. That's no coincidence. Huge respect for the Greeks, who are at this point the biggest achievers in the whole tournament.

Congratulations Greece!

Im not at all shocked, Greece have looked good from the start, France have been overated, and lucky, too many ego's expecting to win, certainly not the worlds best team like everyone makes out, remember the last world cup.

Great stuff from Greece. Found France out completely. While ITV seem to cream themselves whenever a man in blue so much as touched the ball, if you ask me France haven't been that impressive in the whole tournament and I certainly don't see this as much of a shocker - a kinda big one, but nothing outrageous IMO.

Go on the Greek!

Gotta be looking good for the Czech's now.

No, the Welsh/Scots are jealous of england because they're a showing them up. If england were also crap, there'd be no pressure on the others to live up to us.

We're not part of France so there's nothing to be jealous of.

I was pretty much expecting France to have trouble with Greece and they were exceptionally good at strangling the French forwards and France never really threatened.

It's the end of a golden generation for France I think - we've won the world cup and the european cup with them but it's now probably curtains for Lizarazu, Dessailly, Thuram and possibly Zidane. Not sure if France will ever be the same team again but frankly judging by their overall performance in this tournament they've never looked likely to win this one in my mind. Now they'll have to find another genius of the ball like Zidane to drag the team through a tournament again.

I'm sure Arsène is happy to see his boys come home safely ;)

Shame really I was expecting France to do much better and go further. But I had a feeling from the first few minutes it was going to go like this. Greece had the right attitude from the beggining they were never in awe of the French stars and had the confidence to believe they could beat them even though they were the "minnows". I think Greece have been the only over-achievers in the tournament so well done to them though their tactics werent particularly positive.

But it has to be said it was again a pretty poor and dull game. I'm not sure why France were playing in such a relaxed and cautious way they should have gone out and played for a win and I think they could have done. Instead we had a game where they had barely a shot on goal and Zidane didnt even try for a shot on goal

I hope the lesson (but doubt they will) France and the other big teams will take from Euro 2004 is that they have to go out to play and win by scoring as many goals as possible not play 90 mins defensively and hope for an odd lucky goal. The Czechk (sp ?) republic had the right attitude and will probably go on to win the tournament because of it. Though I think Portugal will have a good chance as well.

Didnt see that. Excellently ? Not really the words I would use.

The other thing that strikes me is that all the major stars from Real Madrid, Zidane, Beckham, Figo etc have had a pretty poor tournament. And have looked pretty tired much of the time. I wonder why ? Training regime at Madrid ?

If England were "crap" we'd still take delight in you losing, it has nothing to do with your success. It's a simple matter of rivalry. Take the domestic league, our nearest rivals are Chester and despite them being a conference side for the past few years the banter and glee at them losing is still as strong as it's always been and we have had nothing to be jealous about in that situation.

BTW Well done Greece

Fair point but not entirely accurate in this situation. If it was why would most England fans actually hope the other British teams did well? How can you be rivals to your own country :?:

France missed Viera - they've been terrible without him.

(that's not to say they were anything special with him in the team - but certianly a lot better).

Oh you're at it again!:
How can you be rivals to your own country

 Besides even if you did get the terms right, you must think there should be no rivalry between Man City and Man United, Hibs and Hearts, Rangers and Celtic. Clubs that come from the same town and are rivals. Tsk tsk tsk - terrible stuff indeed.

Exactly. France were poor whether Vieira played or not. Too many big egos who thought Euro 2004 was all about them.

I can't comment on the view of English fans, I don't know why they support the other home nations but just because so many of them do doesn't mean we have to do the same. I'm sorry it upsets some of you but that's just the way it is.

How can you be rivals to your own country :?:
Easy, I'm not English  Had a British team just lost and I was gloating then that would be different. As already pointed out the fact that we are all British only adds to the rivalry.

It's just different with club football.

Also, there's no reason to say Viera was the difference. Zindane and Henry had a bad tournament too

It's just different with club football.

Erm - why? Just cos Camaj declares it to be so?

BTW, are you finally coming round to accepting that Scotland and Wales are seperate countries or are you still unilaterally declaring their Anschluss to the Great English Empire?

Pisces Iscariot
26-06-2004, 12:40
Personally I thought that after the group stages Santini should have thrown in a few new faces. Trezeguet had been awful and his partnership with Henry wasn't working so he should have played Saha who had actaully managed to link up with Henry. Also Greece weren't going to play attacking football and Vieira was injured so they should have taken the chance to play with just one holding midfielder.

N00N00
26-06-2004, 13:18
What i meant was Viera was certinaly one of France's better players (well in the games I saw anyway). He papers over the cracks in their defence and he was excellent against England.

I'm pleased France went out, but expect they might have scraped thorugh or at least given a more respectable performance with Viera and without Trezeguet.

France have got so many decent strikers - don't see why they couldn't use some of them.

 England's borders stop North of Newcastle and West of Bristol or have you never been told that? England is a country hence why you have a seperate football team.... You're wrong mate - just get over it and stop digging yourself a hole of abyssal dimensions.

Fantastic result and performance by the Greeks.Their defence is definitely one of the best in the tournament.England,Italy,Germany please take note.End of an era for France?I would say yes.Rumours in France are saying Lauren Blanc could be the new coach although Platini doubts his coaching credentials,he would opt for Tigana.Only time will tell.
