What's the best freeview box around at the moment? What kind of things do you need to look for when getting one?

Any deals on at the moment?

Greg

If you just want a box without a built in recorder, then the Sony VTX-D800U or the Nokia Mediamaster 221-T are arguably the best. People tend to like the Netgem too.

I'm looking for a new one as well, the current one that i have is a Pioneer On/ITV digital box and it is really shoddyly built, they is like a 3 second lapse between pressing the remote and the box changing channel, it is really slow.

One question though..... what are the epg's like on the boxes made after on/itv digital folded. Sony and Grundig have new boxes out (really small ones) are they any good?

Also, what are the recorder freeview boxes like?

Im thinking of getting one of these recording freeview boxes too. Can you transfer the digital recording direct to your pc from the machines hardrive?

I think you can do this with a tivo??

If I got sky plus would it work like this?

I didnt realise you can get recording freeview boxes.

Do you have to connect to a PC or do they have a built in hard drive like SKY+?

they have built in HDD, some with dual tuners, some with single.

So where can I find out more about the recording freeview boxes, they sound ideal.

Any recommended ones? How do they compare to my Tivo. The freeview box is for my mum, so I'm keeping the Tivo :D

Greg

I'm currently looking at the Thomson box which has a good epg (7 day) although not sure if it has twin tuner.

I have the old 'PACE ondigital box' it was the last model they did for On digital & was faster than the other boxes at the time. I've just bought a NETGEM & had it about 20 days. I am a little dissapointed as so far it has turned off twice & STUCK until I unpluged & re pluged it in again. We can't get channel 5 here so I have to rely on the NETGEM & if I was away for a week or it even turned off when I was recording something I'd be pretty unhappy. Also for an all singing box it doen't have a modulator, so I can't watch Channel 5 or the other freeview channels in the bedroom & lastly it doen't have any channel numbers on the front of the box, you have to have the TV on to make sure the remote has put the right channel on (Radio) etc. It is also not a lot faster than my PACE. But a lot lot faster than my previous Nokia.
