OK i hope i'm not stepping on anyone's toes here by marking this official, but it's been suggested that we can start a thread of pictures of our HC set-up's. I'm hunting down a digital camera as i write so i can show everyone my measly set-up and give everyone a good laugh.

So get posting with them pictures, you know you want to:D

I think this needs an official opening Baps or Drel??

My home cinema can be seen here (http://members.tripod.co.uk/uploadimages/mycinema.jpg) -the room's not 100% finished but I think you can gather the overall design intention and hopefull success.

All comments welcome :)

JPG's you say. No worries will change em over :)

I wasn't sure which format to use when I posted. Also is there a max size allowed then?

If you could let me know that would be cool for future reference.
Cheers :)

EDIT: All sorted guys, now jpg's and smaller. Lost some resolution in the change over but I cant be bothered to take em again! You still get the idea though :)

By the way the DVD units are also from Ikea:
Glass doored one is on page 88. Its called BERTBY and is £79
The other one is on page 97 again and is called BENNO and is £35.

Hope that all helps ya out :)

Is your centre speaker in the centre of the main AV unit on it's end? The reason I ask is I am considering doing the same and just wondered how it sounded?

Bapapapa
06-11-2001, 09:53
nwgarratt - nice setup, but where is your centre speaker? Please don't tell me it's on the chest of drawers to the left!!

nwgarratt
06-11-2001, 10:08
The centre speaker is underneath the TV. It is in the black unit. There is a rectangle space which the CC6 speaker fits exactly.

It is upright rather than longways like most speakers. There is no difference in the quality.

My sub is on the chest of drawers. Its not ideal but it works quite well.

As I have a dog I have to keep everything above dog height. I made some plastic sliding doors to go in front of the appliances below the TV. I just have to slide the door so that it is not in front of the speaker when I watch DVD.

Glad you like the system. I got rid of horrible grey desk and replaced them with the chrome racks yesterday. I think the sound is better already (although the sound was excellent anyway) as the grey desk was immediately next to right front speaker.

I will try to get some pics done at some point but everything is a bit of a mess at the mo as I am carting the whole set-up from home to uni every 10 weeks.

Also if everyone could post what their kit is as well as the pics, it would be good. Sometimes hard to see from the pics.

Keep them coming, surly with over 13000 members there are more set-ups to show.

Questions for jason t

what make is your projector
what size picture do you get & how far is the projector from the screen

What is the fan noise like sitting that close to your head.

Also is it a home made screen or a bought one you have got.

jason t
08-11-2001, 17:44
hi chas

my projector is a sanyo plv30 cost around £1950 new from owl video systems
the lense of my projector is 12 foot 6 away from the front of my screen,it throws an image of 6 foot 6
the screen was bought, it is a dalite model b video spectre it has a gain of 1.3 it cost about £170 delivered they do a matt white screen the same size which is cheaper !!
yes i do get fan noise but you get used to it , obviously it depends how loud you have your amp seeing as i watch most of my films around 9pm i dont have my amp very loud because of the neighbours...

hope this is of some help

jason

cheers m8 that is the projector I am looking at.

In your opinion is it a good projector

jason t
08-11-2001, 20:35
yeah i am pretty happy with it ,got to say though dont get to use it much ,only thing i really regret is getting a screen with a gain.
i just bought a progressive dvd player to go with it but dont really notice too much difference.
my old pioneer dvd player gave of a fantastic picture with the projector especially if you slightly defocus and lose the pixel structure..

had a couple of probs though wont work with playstation (origional grey one)
and had problems using an american dvd player playing region 2 discs through component

hope this helps need any more info just ask

Evade, nice to see someone out there also brought a Saturn and is still using it (for other purposes than a doorstop anyway :) ).

Nice set-up, all you need now is the WS TV and you are sorted. Just wish I had the room for a big (read 'long')stand like that. Oh well

Evade

Thanks for the reply guys
Jason I purchased the lightswitch from Homebase for £20, had been looking for a while and toyed with the idea of using an X10 system (at a price!). But this switch was just what I was looking for (able to control my GU-10 Halogen lights) and the pronto accepted the signal no probs.
The Mission speakers are great, maybe be a little bit too powerful for the size of my room (ie bass) but I found putting the foam bungs (which came with them) into the rear ports made them not so bass heavy, but for the price they are a great all round speaker.
Aha my humble sub, well seen as I only got into HC about 14 months ago my first impression was that I could live without, but that all changed when my friend brought his sub round (what a difference!!) The Yamaha dosen't cut the mustard much with music ..............but with movies well :) it gives that extra punch to the whole sound field.

Millec :) The Saturn I'm afraid has been gathering dust for a couple of months now and will probably be taking a journey to the loft or classifieds soon. As to the WS, hmmmmmm well I'd be lying if I said I'd hadn't been tempted :p hell! even the wife has given me the go ahead. But the TV I've got now, even though it's 6 years old seems to function flawlessly and I'm loathe to spend a large chunk of money on such an impulse buy. :D

Robby
10-11-2001, 08:47
Wow these are all looking pretty impressive.

I've noticed a lot of your are going for the wooden flooring. Is this purely for aesthetic reasons or does it have benefits to a surround sound set-up?? Those mission speakers look pretty popular aswell.

Just nice TV. You say it won't die have you tried the rock star appraoch of chucking it out the window???:D that might work.

I like the red colour schemes that alot of people have been going for a well. I'm not usually a big fan of red but for something like HC i guess it is really easy on the eye.

Nicola i love the Beavis and Butthead that sit on top of your amp, very cool. I've always thought about putting my movies in a cupboard. I like to show them off but i get edgy whenever strangers come in and they can see them all. I guess the more i get the more i would hate having to replace ALL of them.
But that's just me being paranoid.

Good set-ups so far.:D

I've always thought about putting my movies in a cupboard. I like to show them off but i get edgy whenever strangers come in and they can see them all. I guess the more i get the more i would hate having to replace ALL of them.

I have had to build shelves in a wardrobe and put a lock on the front to stop my brother from nicking the DVD's and leaving the cases behind so I think the DVD's are still there. I now have so many there is lot of money in the wardrobe and I don't want fingerprints on them.

I can recommend a box from poundstrecher which is actually for VHS videos but they are good for DVD's. They look like shoeboxes but they fold flat and have poppers on the side to attach the sides to the front and back. They are available in different colours including red. They cost £2.99 each and can hold 21 DVD's each. They look rather nice.

I also have CD boxes as well which are the same but smaller.

Evade nice set up mate :)
I have a remote controlled lightswitch that my Pronto also works with. I will post a pic of it later today if I can. Its different to your in that its touch sensitive so it looks like a blank plate. There is no button to push. As soon as you touch it the light goes on/off. If you keep your finger on it the lights dim. I had one years ago that broke and it has taken me AGES to track one down again.
Like I say, will put a pic on later to show you all :)

Its a shop near Hounslow in west london. Forget the name now but will find out for you.
Homebase and B&Q both stopped doing them.

The Richer Sounds one isn't touch sensitive. Will post a pic later and try to get the name and number for for you jason :)

Ok then here goes, this is mine. The equipment is as follows:

Hitach C32w35tn TV
Pace Digibox
Humax irci5400 Digital satellite reveiver connected to 1m motorised dish
Toshiba SD210 ES DVD player
Sony STRDB1070 DD/DTS Receiver
Toshiba V804B VCR (not pictured)
Sega Dreamcast
Aura interactor cushion ( a fiver from a car boot sale brand spanking new :D ) pictured on sofa, but is usually placed behind the middle cushion to be more comfy.
Philips Pronto (not pictured)

Wharfedale EM95 front speakers (the left speaker is on the far left of the door and is moved as and when required.)
Wharfedale Valdus centre
Mordaunt Short MS10i rears
TV surround speakers for the rear centre (these currently reside behind the sofa due to the wife not wanting any more speakers, but they will eventually be mounted on the ceiling firing straight down)

All lamps (and lights too when the electrician from work decides to come and fit them)are controlled by the Pronto via the x-10 receiver which is on top of the digibox. There are 2 lights behind the tv which give out a little light all around behind the picture which makes viewing easier on the eyes. One sits on top of the tv and one on the unit at the back. These were bought from ikea for £10 a pair.

Here is my light swith jason.

I looked everywhere for a touch sensitive one that is remote controlled. I prefer this as the normal ones all seem to have a huge button in hte middle which looks ugly.

http://members.tripod.co.uk/silverpenguin/Stuff/images/lightswitch.jpg
OMG the resolution has dropped!! Didn't look like this before I uploaded it?

Anyhow, the little round thing top left is the sensor. The plate is not a giant button, it is a solid panel which responds to the lightest touch. MO these are far better looking than most remote controlled switches.

jason t, it was £34.99  I will find out name of shop for you.

Oh, have a gold plated one in the bedroom as well. They used to do silver a very long time ago but now only come in white or gold :(

You are right as that is were I got one from years ago. They dont do it anymore although I was told that there are a few dotted about, but once they are gone thats it (although it wouldn't surprise me if the spotty oink who worked there was wrong!). It was cheaper as well which is annoying :(
You are right about the halogen thing, they dont work with it but as I mainly use lamps I'm not to bothered.

Here's a couple of shots of my home set-up. It looks like I need to practice a bit more with the digi-cam - black kit against a dark background doesn't stand out too well.

You'll have to take my word for it that there's a Denon 3801 and Sony 725 under the TV. I have the Sky digibox and the VCR stood on their ends to the right of the TV.

I've got a separate stereo set-up, sharing the Aegis 2 front speakers - with Aegis 1's used for the rears.

Are those the Teac LS 5.1 speakers fromn Richersounds?

What amp are you using with them and whats the sound quality like?

Thinkg of gettting these and the Kenwood 5050 amp from Richersounds.

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys,
Has anyone ever discovered a *cheap* (ie not Lutron or Futronix) infrared remote light switch that can handle two circuits, in other words the replacement for a double-switch? Letsautomate say for X10 you have to use fuse-box based thingies and SmithsTimeGuard don't do one. It is a real pain as I only want to IR control one light circuit, the other can be manual for all I care, but I don't want to have to fit two switch plates as the WAF will be negative I should think - cheers.

Kanedda, are those the Teac ls5.1u speakers u have there?

kanedaa
13-11-2001, 09:22
Punisher46 - Yep, thats the Teac LS5.1U speaker package I have. Paid £150 for it couple of months ago and I'm very happy with it. The only problem is I have little experience in this area, but I can say that I compared it to the Sony Home Theater Package available from Argos (5 satellites, subwoofer and a big chunky silver Amp for £299.99) and its easily better in all areas except the sub its not quite as boomy, giving a more suttle effect that is probably preferable for myself as this is a bedroom setup.

For £120 at the moment its an absolute bargain for what is a quality set of speakers (in both build quality, looks and sound) but my only minor warning is that the centre speaker is BIG and just about sits ontop of my TV!!

Kanedaa thanks for posting those that truly is an excellent HC.
By far my favourite so far and this is in your BEDROOM. WOW!!!!

I like the figures and posters you have, it gives the room a real vibe, it looks pretty cosy too. (I bet the chicks dig it;) )
I've always thought of having a couple of those movie related figures adorn my set-up (especially the Desperado one) but i have enough trouble with dust as it is, it would be a real nightmare to keep tidy. I must say your's looked pretty spotless, have a quick wipedown before you took the pictures?????:D .

Anyway well done mate that is a great little HC you got going there think i might take a leaf out of you book and display my boxsets at the top. All proud like!!!, The Akira tin looks especially effective with the figures either side.

Oh and one last thing...... Dang!!You must be LOADED

Cheers Kannada. I only asked because the front speakers look slightly small and tinny.

p.s the £120 package from Richersounds is the beech effect, black ones are still £150.

the front speakers are actually the same as the centre speaker, but they sound great to me easily matching (if not surpassing) my old JVC Adagio system (which was very good IMO) which had pretty chunky speakers. thing is though, i'm no 'audiophile' so tbh I can't say much more than they sound 'good' :)

I would say get RS to demo them for you but the b'stards refused to do so when I made that same request - so I just bought the set anyway and i'm happy with them.

Thanks for the comments everyone (especially robby), was a tad unsure about posting the pics tbh ;) glad I did now.

Here's my (ageing setup). The quality of the pics aren't great but thats what you get for a having low level lighting and a digital camera.

The first one is of my kit;

http://members.tripod.co.uk/AndyJPearce/hcsetup.jpg

which is made up of;

TV - Panasonic TX36PF10
DVD - Multi-region Sony DVP S325
Amp - Sony STRDB925
VCR - Panasonic NV-HD675
Digibox - Silver Panasonic
PS2
and a Sony MDS JB930 which is usually in my hi-fi setup upstair but I was recording childrens tv themes onto MD for my 1 year old!
It all sits on a Optimum AV stand (which is bloody strong - the TV weighs a ton!).
My speaker setup is Tannoy M-series Front, Centre, Rears and Sub connected with Cable Talk3.1.

The second picture shows a read speaker with my DVD collection;

http://members.tripod.co.uk/AndyJPearce/dvdcollection.jpg

No prizes for guessing the DVD playing though.

Crash
15-11-2001, 09:36
My set up is as follows :

TV - Sony Wega 32" KV-32FX20U - 50Hz - Fantastic picture - Run the sound through the receiver usually, but it's pretty decent anyway.

DVD - Hitachi DVP 250E - Twin laser for good CD use as well.
It's only region 2 and I tend to only buy films I really want and rent the rest from our local library @ £3 a week giving you enough time to look at all extras etc. If there is ever a film or documentary I cannot get in region 2 I will probably buy another player. For me the extras with a film are almost entirely incidental and wouldn't stop me buying a film if I wanted it, whether or not it had lots of or no extras.
The picture with the Hitachi is pin sharp I could not be happier with it.

Cable Box - Pace : bringing in NTL digital - I was one of the first in Hertfordshire to get digtial (so they tell me) and suffered with many of the well documented problems of black screens etc. Things are fine now and other than the odd artifact the picture and sound are very very good.

Receiver - Sherwood RVD6095RDS - Bargain from Richer Sounds - they mis-priced it. First receiver so difficult to judge but I am happy with it apart from the known problem of the master volume retained according to mode. In reality it's not really a problem.

Stand
I recently changed the stand from a long pine unit and now use the Sony stand that came with the TV. I am looking for something that looks good but also hides the spaghetti of cables you can see behind. It currently leaves no room for a video but I haven't used it for a long time and we have another video in another room if we really feel the need.

Speakers - Tannoy MX3 (Biwired) : Tannoy MXC : Tannoy MXR
Great sound with films DTS included and the same for stereo CD's - I am not an audiophile

Subwoofer - Tannoy MXSUB10
Still unsure about the "correct" way to set it up but I am impressed with the difference it makes.

Tick shelves from Ikea : £4

Cables - Can't remember details but they are all in the middling price bracket.

Well seeing as others have posted pics I might as well make a fool of myself and do the same:D

Here's the front of the room......

http://members.tripod.co.uk/Alanok/MyHomeCinema/images/fronts.jpg

To the left on the floor we have my stereo kit consisting of...

Arcam 7SE CD player
Arcam 8 stereo amp
Cable Talk 3.1 speaker cable
Cable Talk interconnects
hooked upto Tanny M3 floor standing stereo speakers.
Not shown - Bush £50 turntable, Sharp Mini Disc player.
Had this for about 4 and a half years and still sounds great.

The AV equipment from the left downwards is....

Yamaha Sub
Thomson Phillipe Stark thingy VCR
Pioneer ITVdigital box
Yamaha centre speaker
Sony 25" Nicam TV (upgrade to a Toshiba 40" projection widescreen 40PW13 hopefully before Christmas)
Yamaha VS10 amp
Toshiba S210e DVD player
Playstation
Yamaha speakers on top of Tannoy speakers.
plus various Mackenzie Thorpe pics.
The TV bench is from Ikea for £50 I think.

And this is the rear of the room.....

http://members.tripod.co.uk/Alanok/MyHomeCinema/images/rear.jpg

Yamaha rear speakers
Ikea speaker stands.

Not great but it'll do for now:) Well post a pic when I hopefully get the new TV.

Hmmmm wasn't expecting a question about my carpet:D Oh well we aim to please. The carpet is a kinda biscuit colour with little white squares in rows. I wanted natural carpet like seagrass but didn't like the feel of it so I went for this lovely soft type instead. Unfortunately I bought it from a carpet warehouse in Darlington for about £150 fitted for the carpet you see and for the upstairs bedroom of the same size...bargain. It was what was left from a showroom house on a new estate. If you want I can send you a offcut so you can match it....e-mail me if you like:)

Hi Justin
I quite like the 9000 really.I replaced a 7700 with it also.
I find the picture better on the 9000,but cd replay better on the 7700.
Also the multi-region mod on the 9000 is easier to use.

Thought I might as well post my setup too now that its almost as I'd like it.

I moved from the UK to Finland about 3 weeks ago, and everything you can see went with me on my journey.

Here's a list of my stuff

Sony 725D DVD Multi region
Sony 940AV Receiver
Sony 930 CD Player (thanks for the prod Baps...)
Sony 940 MD Player
Tannoy MxC
Mission M74 fronts
Tannoy Mx1 rears
Phillips 32PW9763
Pronto

Here's a pic of it "in situ" (hmm, perhaps I should have tidied up the coffee table a bit... :D)...

and a close up...

http://www.neuon.com/alex/avstuff1.jpg

and the rears...

http://www.neuon.com/alex/avstuff2.jpg

The wooden furniture all came from Ikea. I'd actually like to upgrade the TV to a larger model, but the other half has ruled that one out... doh. The only problem I have with my setup is the cables. I really need to sort them out when I find time....

Sorry for getting trigger happy with the old camera

Rear speaker positioning's a bit frightening, why so low?

Mr. Wilby
19-11-2001, 10:41
Alanok,

I can't for the life of me remember how much the bench was - around 100UKP IIRC. It was an absolute nightmare to get hold of though (the Ikea Magiker ranger is quite new, and there was a "manufacturing delay" on the TV bench in particular... don't get me started on my ikea gripes... :( )

Spikey,

I agree about the finish - its very smart and really integrates well when you have multiple units.

The speakers actually aren't that low, but the picture does give that impression - the sofa is a bit of a Finnish monster... It does sound good though :)

I used to have a Sony Pascal (SAVE 705) setup when I was back in blighty, and compared with that it really kicks some donkey's bottom.

The reason I went with LFing is because its easier to keep clean and looks pretty smart. I have heard it can make your system echo a little but I have not had that problem myself?!

Ikea have just got the Magiker back in stock and is the TV bench of my choice now. Can you tell me if the MXC would fit in the middle 'gap' if the two shelves were removed on it's end? This is how I plan to position the centre if I do get one - thanks.

Also it is 85 quid at the moment.

85 quid sounds right... as for stock, never trust them over the phone - get them to check just in case (if you haven't already...). It took my 5 visits (UK) to get one of these benches...

From memory I think it will fit, but i will measure and post back either tonight or tomorrow.

:D Indeed - I learnt that lesson the hard way, after being told they had 5 (TV Benches) in stock in the Wembley store, and 60 mins later all were gone... they never had 5 in the first place, just 2 (it turned out...).

Anyway, I'm very bitter and twisted when it comes to Ikea and I promise not to mention it again on this thread

So, as to the measurements:
yes, it will accommodate the tannoy MxC. Basically, all the shelves (even the middle) are adjustable... If you are intending to put the mxC somewhere like this:-

+------------+------+------------+
| | mxC | |
+------+----+------+----+-------+
| |1 |2 |
+------------+------+-------------+
| | | |
+------------+------+-------------+
| | |

then you'll obviously have to cut the middle risers (1 & 2) down a bit so that there's room for the mxC to overflow, but height-wise it will fit fine (just adjust the height of the shelf).

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

Argh: the forum php scripts completely mangle my ASCII art! :(
Expand the horizontal bars to match the plus signs and it sort of makes sense...

Just
20-11-2001, 16:13
Thanks, I am actually intending to have the MXC on it's side though (ie so you have to hold your head 90 degrees to the right to read 'Tannoy' :)) - would this still fit?

Ikea's stock checking doesn't take account of reserved items and as far as I know there's no way of knowing how far down the list you'd be even if you did order one.

One thing that finally put me off the Magiker is that daft one door and no sensible way of adding another. Don't know if it's relevant to you but personally I needed to make it kid proof.

Funny, Ikea have always told me they don't do reservations - typical! As for the door, I don't think it will make it on to mine (when/if I get one). If it does it will just stay over one side rather than in the middle too. No kid problems thankfully!

You can only do it instore for items out of stock. You get a card thru the post when it comes in and they hold it for a fortnight. In theory!

Ok first of all, to answer the first two questions people will ask:

1. Yes I promise to get that 36" widescreen very very soon,

2. and Yes I will put my equipment on a rack very soon too.

Ok, sorry for the poor image quality, did these with a digital video camera.

So here is the view straight on from the "sweet spot" (but standing up). Those are Kef Q35s fronts, a Q95C center and an REL Strata 1 on the right behind the telly. (and thats a Grundig Digbox and a Panasonic 825 SVHS deck in the TV cabinet)

http://members.lycos.co.uk/sweetmate/10.jpg

Then here is a view facing back from above and behind the telly of my Kef TDM34DS THX rears and my 2 EX speakers mounted up high (good ol' JBL Control 1s)

http://members.lycos.co.uk/sweetmate/2.jpg

Main equipment: (which needs a proper rack) are a Denon A10SE and a Denon POA-T10SE (which is on the floor behind the TV the poor thing) and a Pioneer 717 DVD player:

and here are a few more views:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/sweetmate/4.jpg

and a shot of my twin Ikea DVD "Benno" towers (in a separate room):

I Promise to get a digital camera to take some proper photos when i get that 36" Panny and the rest of the Kef THX speakers! :)

I tried to do exactly that, the Magiker was out of stock after I had bought something else I asked them to reserve it and let me know when it was in 'don't offer that service sir, here is the barcode so you can call to check each week...'

http://photos.yahoo.com/thxtex

The projector is a Barco Data 800 Crt made in 1991 and has 6000hrs on it. I got it secondhand for less than a grand.
The screen is a da-lite fixed screen 16:9, cost £200 used.

Sound system is a Yamaha Dsp-A2 amp, Kef speaker package with Rel Storm Sub.

Dvd is panasonic a160 multi region.

The room is a dedicated cinema room, and is still to be finished, the photos were taken on the day the Projector was installed.

Its a Tannoy Precision PC centre. Dual cones with tweeter. Not as big as the Tannoy Definition Centre which costs 1K!

Thus the very high cabinet! Its about 18" deep too. When I had my old cabinet, it sat ontop of it, and the TV sat ontop of the centre! However, T.Wife HATED it, and wanted a cabinet that it could fit inside of.

No Waf factor when it comes to my room. It is designed to be like a cinema room should. Dark colours on the walls and ceiling. This is because to use a crt projector you need a dark room. No good having magnolia walls as this takes light away from the screen and washes out the image. I also use heavy duty curtains next to the screen and over the window at the opposite side of the room. This helps with the sound, deadens the room to stop reflections that are unwanted.

If you look at magazines like HCC they feature dream installs costing £55k upwards with Magnolia WALLS FFS! Usually because the client wants that, not realising that the expensive equipment they have bought is only giving 50% of the performance because of the drawbacks. The best designed rooms use warm dark colours.

By the way it might shock you to know that my room with all equipment cost less than £3500. Easy when you know how. And it will outperform some rooms costing 5 times that.

SilverPenguin and THX 1138,

I currently have an REL Strata 1 with Q35 fronts and a Q95 and i definitely agree wth you about REL. I've had mine for almost 7 years now and it has stayed strong while the rest of my kit has been upgraded many times.

But I'm thinking of going for an all TDM set up. I can get the center and the sub for really good prices and i'm currently looking for some fronts. My question is, do you guys think the TDM45B will be a noticeable improvement on my REL Strata? I'm swaying towards it as I hear it has more power and punch with movies but is less musical than an REL but i never listen to music on my HT setup and am thinking it should integrate well with the other speakers.

Opinions?

P.S. Sorry if this is straying off topic, but if I get a good response then i'll be draining my wallet and posting some new pics of my new gear and then we'll be back on topic! :D

The tdm Sub is woefull at best! I have auditioned the tdm THX speakers many times, and this will be my next upgrade adding the tdms accross the front and rear and keep the REl Storm.

So my advice would be to upgrade the rest of your speakers to tdms and keep the strata, and why not add a second Sub to that to give an even better balance and deep bass.

Have fun.:D

I have to disagree with you there mate, the TDM45B sub sounds fantastic - I auditioned matched speakers/subs and seperate subs for about 2 months before going for the Kef THX sub. Admittedly, it takes some time to set up and can be very boomy if set up wrong but does sound incredible. Placement, as usual, makes all the difference - I was lucky to audition the full set of Kef THX TDM series speakers in my house before buying them, always best to hear the speakers in the proper acoustic environment before buying and my dealer was very trusting. I bought them in the end and the set as a whole sounds incredible. Just need to buy another set of TDM34DS surround speakers for 6.1.

If I had not bought the Kef set, I would have gone for a Rel sub.

Ok, guess I have to hear one in my house then to decide!

I'm finding that my REL Strata 1 is running out of steam at the levels my denon can drive the rest of my speakers. When the overall sound level is up, i.e. in films with very dynamic soundtracks such as Phantom Menace, the sub is clipping (eg. during the podrace sequence) and the solution is to turn the sub down but that means that it isnt at the right levels compared to the rest of the speakers at lower overall sound levels (if that makes sense).

I guess what i'm saying is the REL isn't capable of the same dynamic range as my KEFs with the Denon. I know there is a sub peak adjustment level on the amp but I don't want to use it!!

Well i'll see if i can do a home audition and let you guys know.

A home audition is the only way.....your dealer may ask for a deposit and you may have to do a lot of running around, changing subs but it is worth it to get the right equipment.

Good luck.

I dont find this with my Storm, infact if anything it out drives all the other speakers.
I was going to get the Strata 1 originally but the shop was sold out and I was too impatient to wait a week so I got the Storm!

But the best thing to do is get a home trial if you can. Personally, I would stick with Rel. Although a friend of mine had a Cerwin Vega years ago. Forget the model but it had a 10" AND a 12" speaker!!! Now THAT was loud!!!

Hi Boink! thanks for the compliment :)

As with all of the compoments in my setup, I spent ages auditioning the TV - I tried the Philips, the Sony (overrated), the Panasonic, Hitachi and the Toshiba.

The Tosh came out on top for looks, I hate the bulky surround of most widescreen TV's. The picture is outstanding IMHO, I have read of people having strange geometry problems and over-bright displays but I do not notice anything like that with my set. Very, very impressed with the picture quality.

I would have bought a Plasma if I hadn't have spent so much on the speakers though.

Two subs, if you have the room are best. Both subs need to be placed together. The reason is that with two you fill the room with more sub bass information but in a very balanced way. Many experiments have been done with this kind of set up by some off the worlds best sound engineers. Infact if you look at most professional set ups they include two subs.

Head over to www.avforums.com and troll the speakers and sub forum for more on this interesting subject.

Reefer,

Guess we will have to disagree on the TDM sub. Have to admit i have not had it home to try myself, but i have heard two one in a mates house, and i was very disapointed with both. They were very unstable with low frequency effects, even overloading, but i believe this is much to do with the fact this sub only goes down to 35hz, compared to the Rel Storm at 17hz.(official specs for models). As for the rest of the TDM series, abosolute brilliance!!!
With both movies and music!!!
Nice set up by the way Reefer, like the compact look with the speakers looking like towers at the TV side, also reminds me just how big these things are, thats a 36" tv they are flanking!

I thought that if you have 2 subs they are supposed to be at opposite sides of the room thus eliminating those "bass holes" that come from using single point bass sources. Surely if you place them together you will be creating identical (but louder :)) sound waves in terms of how they diperse through the room?

Thanks for the compliments guys. Getting the TV to line up with the speakers was pure luck! The stands are Kef wood stands, they are £300 for the pair but in hindsight, I should have got the steel ones - they are completely hollow, no sand I am afraid :( The steel stands are £100 less!

http://www.btinternet.com/~adamharris/rear1.jpg
http://www.btinternet.com/~adamharris/rear2.jpg

You will notice that I had to put the dipoles on the back wall, which is the wrong thing to do - I had little choice in the matter, the side walls just do not have the room :(. When I get some spare cash, I shall probably get some MK THX rears to put on the side and keep the Kef dipoles on the back for 6.1.

THX 1138 - true, the TDM45B does have a frequency range 35Hz - 150Hz, this meets the THX standards quite nicely, so I have no gripes with the sub - I will say that it is a complete bitch to set up and I mainly turn off the THX switch so that I can alter the levels if need be.

My room is only small and some would say the system is a little bit overkill but hell, a man has got to have his toys!

And yes, my uplighters are different, my missus keeps nagging me to sort it out!

Thanks to Chris, I now have my piccies up here on the web. If the following is working you'll be seeing my setup.

Here's the view from the sofa.
http://www.evapor8.com/uploads/panorama.jpg
That's a Tosh VJ whatsicallit 43" up front, resting on the stand of the model it replaced. I'm building a new stand for her this weekend (I hope), because she's now 9" too high. The fronts are mission 700 series, as are the rears. The centre's a Wharfedale Valdus. The Sub is a paradigm something. Inside the stand is a trusty Yamaha E492, and a Pioneer636D.

Sorry for the terrible tiling of images. The room does not really have a vaulted roof, but the wall on the left does slant (we're in the roof). The blackout blinds are homemade and do the job (a little too) perfectly.

To give you a sense of scale, the sofa's this big:
http://www.evapor8.com/uploads/sofascale.jpg

Cheers to all who offered assistance with webspace. And another to those who found the bargains to permit purchase of the above.

That looks a great room to chill out in and those blinds look great. What i wouldn't give to be able to block my window that faces the sun directly (very annoying).

I bet you could stick a wicked Scalectrics in there;) :D

07-12-2001, 10:18
Sofa has 9ft 2 of seating width. Got it made specially (Sofa Workshop, good deal as it included delivery (through the window :))). Took me bloomin ages to find a fabric in 'the tv's off' grey, and then S&V replaced my TV with a silver model. Doh.

Blinds are velcro'd to the window frame. Blackout fabric was £5.95 a metre, so about £20 + sofa fabric to match it. When you turn the lights out, its dark.

Very dark.

Very dark indeed.

Glad you like it.

Avery Fabrics (nasty local shop in high street West Wickham), but I've also seen it in markets. Any of the big department stores which sell fabric on the roll (Allders, Debenhams, John Lewis) should have it on the shop floor. Its usually white and feels slightly plasticky.

Most high streets have a nasty shop selling a thousand varieties of cheap lace curtains and nasty pillowcases. If they sell fabric too, they'll have it. :)

Can I make a suggestion ?

I think the center speaker would be much better off on top of the TV rather than in the cupboard.

The doors on the cabinet will either block sound if closed or rattle ever so slightly and cut down on sound dispersion if opened. Also the center speaker could then be centered.

Also regarding the rears, have you tried towing them in ever so slightly ?

Hope you dont mind

Urban Tiger
11-12-2001, 18:38
Dont mind at all Duncan :)

Like most front rooms and relationships, theres always a compromise. For a start, you suggest to my wife the centre speaker sits on top of the TV! Been there, done it, paid for it afterwards, its a no go! ;)

The doors are always open when the centre is in use, I'm not into muffled sound. The cabinet is actually very well built and the doors dont rattle at all (i've even sat on the floor next to them and checked!). If they rattled, they would be off, no questions.

Although the centre isnt exact centre, it still glues the sound to the screen like its supposed to, and sounds exactly the same (after extensive testing) as it did on top of the TV. If anything, its slightly better lower down as its firing more level with my seating position.

My ideal house would have a cellar (with a lockable door to keep wife/child out) where I could do what I want. Until then I'm on the main bus to compromiseville ;)

Thanks for your comments. :)

Guess I have been very, very fortunate with my HC

Live at home with parents in a very well built, old, mid terrace three beroomed house.

Being an only child I have been able to move my bed into the small "spare" room and turn a well sized "bedroom" into my A/V room.

I hope to get a digital camera as soon as I can and get some pictures up on here.

Just for info at moment I have......

A 32" Sony W/Screen TV
A Pioneer 919E LD/Multi-Region DVD player
A Denon A1D Amp ( still as good as it was 2 years ago )

B&W CC6 Center
Tannoy M2 at rear of room used for DTS soundtracks

Nice setup Mr Tiger.

It does seem to be lacking something though....

Maybe if you moved that pot plant and shifted the speaker over slightly....

yep, that's it.

YOU NEED A BIGGER TV

Get it sorted.

It'll even go on top of that stand nicely. Matches the colour and everything.

You know it makes sense!

Go see your bank manager and get a loan if you need to.

Your wife will love you for it....

PS Did you catch the person who played noughts and crosses on your rug?

Do you know any (cheap) hitmen in the Aldershot area? With her life insurance, I could go PLASMA! On the other hand I would have to look after Abi 24/7 so maybe thats not a good idea. :(

it is -

Pioneer VSA-E03 amp
Technics SL-PG490
Schneider speakers (£60 in Asda!!!!!!!)
Creative dvd-rom with dxr3 card
Cambridge audio connects for cd-amp
Prowire s-vhs cable
cheap speaker wire

I bought all of this when i was a student, so did it on the cheap(i did not take out a loan, just had to save!!)

I have just started upgrading, and the most obvious place to start was the dvd player sooo...
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/gertrude.309/newdvd.jpg
got it for my christmas(not alowed it yet :( )

i have to say, although the speakers were dirt cheap, me and a mate tried them as a replacement for the ones he spent £400-£500 on, and there was no difference.
the thing that i don't like is the amp, not powerfull enough. (it just sounds a little weak/washed out)

does me for now though.

gertrude, how does the centre channel sound with it being behind the fronts? I was thinking about hanging mine on the wall behind the telly as I've run out of space in the cabinet (got another DSS and karaoke machine thats needs it).

I got my kit when I was a student as well but when I had a year out for paid work placement (sandwich course) so managed to get a decent first setup, still running strong :)

Nice little system you have there although I do wander about the speakers. What are your friends £400-£500 pair ? and was it on your amp you did the comparison ?

Im not having a dig, but I demoed loads of speakers on my A1D before settling on the 603s as front speakers. Whilst the difference between these and speakers priced £100 or more was not that great they blew the cheaper, below £100 speakers.

urban - i am used to a "proper" camera. and on top of that it only cost £40 to muck about with.

kxcdev - i adjusted the distance settings in the amp and it sounds fine, although i will have to go and play with it now, 'cos you've got me thinking:D

dunc - to be fair, they were actually labeled at £199, but it was the last set, the box had a tiny bash on it and i must have not looked interested 'cos the home and leisure assistant said "oh look, i'll cut the price. i want them out the store, take up to much space" i just looked cool, so she said "£60?" i had to force myself to look mildly interested and then ran, grabbed a trolly, piled them in and ran like a loooooooooooooony.
i would like to point out though, that i had just done a night shift and was brain dead, and it was actually that that was on my face. best damn bargain i ever got.
and now to answer your question :D , yeah, we used my amp and his. only difference, they both had more oomph and richness on his.

--edit

dunc - good to see you got your logo sorted. nice

cheers. for some starnge reason my amp (sony 930) won't allow me to set a further distance for the centre than the L/R :( doesn't sound too bad though so I guess I'll just have to live with it. It does mention in the manual not to put it further away than the fronts though. bummer!

Yahoo! Photos (http://uk.photos.yahoo.com/bc/c1j1b0uk/lst?.dir=/Home+Cinema&.src=ph&.done=http%3a//uk.photos.yahoo.com/bc/c1j1b0uk/lst%3f%26.dir=/Home%2bCinema%26.src=ph%26.view=t&.view=t)

Which consists of:
TV Toshiba 28WBD8
DVD LG 3350e
AMP Yamaha AX620
VCR Awia FX7700
FRONT Tannoy mX4
REAR Tannoy mX1
CENTRE Tannoy mXC
Telewest Cable

And a P200 64Mb running WinXP in B&W:), at the mo acting as a house server, but hopefully soon to be used to stream mp3's to the yamaha.

Oh if any one explain what causes the problem in the last to pics I would be very gratefull. On certain dvd images (I used the 2001 breifing scene) an area of bright light colour will soon discolour, blue on the left and yellow on the right ie a blob will appear and the grow (basically filling the entire wall in this scene, but not the back wall which is odd) this blob affects that area of the picture, as shown the by the dvd menu pic

It doesn't do this on pictures from the telewest box (eg their troubleshooting channels), so it must be the dvd player...so whats wrong with it? sheilding??

Ok, my sisters neighbour has just got himself a £15k cinema system! :(
I had a very quick look the other day and all I can say is....WOW. He has a projector so the picture was HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE and looked superb! I have decided to look in to buying a projector in the new year :D
Can anyone suggest any fairly decent budget to mid-range projectors? His one was £8k but that a little over priced for me :(

Any help would be great :)

sweetmate

penguin, you'd be amazed at how cheap 2nd-hand projectors are. Look for older barcos and selecos, that can be found for around £2000 and when paired with a good line doubler/scaler will give amazing images for the same prices as 36" TVs.

I would love to get me one but not everyone can dedicate an entire room of the house to HT (the world is a cruel place :) )

I'm currently in the process of helping a friend in buying a home theatre set up. We were initially at around the £30K mark but we're currently trying to lower the budget by hunting out bargains and not going too over the top! But we've listened to some seriously good stuff. Once you've experienced the plane crash in Fight Club through M&K THX speakers, a Lexicon MC-12 processor, huge Meridian or Parasound power amps, on a 10ft screen, going back home to my Denon integrated AV amp and 29" standard TV is really depressing.

Suffice to say, once my mate gets his setup, I think i'll have to move my DVD towers round to his house, and maybe bring a mattress too

What is a line doubler/scaler? I guess it does what it says on the tin but are they needed? I have no idea as I have never looked in to projectors before.

Ok well I hope you know a little about TV formats or this may be a bit confusing.

When you view a PAL or NTSC image on a TV the line structure is usually not very visible (although i can notice that NTSC has less lines fairly easily on my set). But if you blow this image up to 10ft wide, the line structure becomes very visible. So a line doubler basically extrapolates extra lines from the image. It creates inbetween lines if you like, albeit slightly crudely if the doubler is not of a decent standard. A quadrupler is similar but quadruples each line (as the name suggests).

A scaler is slightly different in that it will often de-interlace the image too, which usually gives an even better picture, making the scan lines far less evident. It will also scale up the image to higher resolutions (ie 800x600, 1024x768 and so on). A home PC with a decent graphics card can basically act as a scaler, in that it de-interlaces the picture for you (as pc monitors need de-interlaced feeds and TVs need interlaced feeds) and can output the image at higher resolutions than the source. This is why many people with projectors often build home theatre pcs as their dvd sources.

If you have a look on Ebay US there are loads of Barcos but you would have to speak to the seller about shipping costs and so on.

Check out http://www.convergent-av.co.uk/ and maybe email Gordon the owner as he knows his stuff and can often be found helping people out with projectors in these forums and in the avforums (http://www.avforums.com)

Regarding your problem on your TV. I take it it's not your speakers, they are magnetically shielded aren't they?. We used to have a similar problem with an old (can't remember which make) TV in that whenever we vaccumed near it it would start producing these funny blobs and eventually we had a band of pink develop down the left side of the TV. Now this was a good 5 - 6 years ago. I don't think it can happen to any TV's today but that's the only thing i can think of.

cjb110
18-12-2001, 15:16
I wish it was the speakers, cause that would be an easy fix...but no its not:(

The blobs are always blue and yellow, and only appear during bright light colours that are on the screen for a period, ie flashes are ok, but otherwise the blobs appear and worsen. A simple on/off for the telly clears the distortion.

Could it be related to the strength of the dvd players output? the vcr, telewest and dvd are all connected via rgb scart cables, and I have tried just a svideo connection, same problem but slower to appear and also slightly better, the blob was there but not as bright.

Can i just add some more to this being a Barco Owner.

Second hand CRT IS the way to go, but you will need the room for it, these things are BIG, VERY BIG. But the pay off is well worth it because at this time no other technology comes close to offing the type of quality that crt does.

And you do not need a scaler to start with. I dont have one, but from my sitting position (12ft from screen) you can hardly notice and gives a very watchable picture, you can add a PC or scaler when funds allow, which i will do soon. Jenz who runs Babes & Bullets is working on a dvd player with built in scaler for use with CRT, so this will be worth waiting for.

Now how much does it cost and where can you source one?

Stay away from e-bay or similar internet sales, so many things need to be checked when buying a secondhand unit, and these sales usually dont allow inspection of the tubes or electronics.

Why not e-mail Roland Brooks who runs B4 Projection in Reading. I have had many dealings with him, he installed my system and has helped with servicing at a very reasonable price. He is an ex employee of Barco and knows everything you can think off about Barco Projectors. e-mail Roland@B4projection.co.uk

Also Barcos are professional machines and are very highly specc'ed. Seleco's are very good but dont have the same performance, I have seen both running together to compare.

So how much?

Right I will give away my secret, i sourced my Barco data800 for £600! Low hours and good quality tubes, an absolute bargain! But i did my research, read up and knew what to look for.

You should be able to get a BD800/801 for £800-2000 reconditioned from someone like Roland.
Next up the ladder is the BD808 at about £3k-5k recond
And the ultimate being the BD1209 at £8.5-10k recond.
Installation is usually £500 plus vat, which incs fitting and convergence and cables, but this can be more depending on what is involved, so give him a shout.
If you decided to contact Roland please let him know it was me that put you his way. And like the previous post quaoted above, go to www.avforums.com and check out the projector section. You will find some feedback from some of Rolands customers, all positive i may add. Also give Gordon Fraser a shout as he is also very knowledgable when it comes to things CRT.

Sheepking - Do you have a DD/DTS plaque in your living room?, you can make out something in the top left hand corner of your first pic.

I thought I would share with you my new TV I got for myself as a Christmas present. As reference check out Page 3 of this thread if you want to see what my earlier Home Cinema looked like.

The TV is a Panasonic TX32PL10C 100hz and cost a bargain £860 delivered with stand from Empiredirect (www.empiredirect.co.uk). Very impressed indeed with it.

Alanok,

Watch out for the screen burn on that big red x on your screen. Maybe bring the contrast down a little? ;)

Alanok, CLH,

What do you reckon on you Panasonic 32PL10s TVs? Read they dont do the full business on pictures - Though Alanok, it would seem you beg to differ.

Cool, although that little cupboard under the stairs looks a little freaky, could just be my imagination though, hehe.

ooops and heres my rear speakers and stands....

The cupboard under the stairs hides all the cable runs etc. Its because when not in use you can close the door and hide it :)

Have you tried facing the speakers at each other. i found this made the rear sound better, but my room keeps going after the speakers and your against a wall. Still would give it a try though

Was going to try that as I noticed the Dolby Digital website also has them facing each other. I shouldn't say this ...... but, I think they look better as they are.

An update on my system. Following on from pics on page 6 of the thread, I got my new B & W series 3 speakers yesterday. Heres a pic.

http://members.tripod.co.uk/urbantiger1966/bw1.jpg

The wife is not happy about the centre now being on the TV, but its just too big for the unit. Gives me a chance to spread my gear out a bit for more ventilation :)

Nice rug Urban Tiger, we have a navy one ;)

Do you use the radiator behind your kit? Doesn't it get really hot?

Good old Ikea :)

[b]Do you use the radiator behind your kit? Doesn't it get really hot?

Wife insists it stays on but I've turned it down without her knowing. She never checks it. Theres no where else for our kit to go. If I ever move again, my criteria will include a nice sized room for HC :)

Urban Tiger: You should easily be able to compensate for the loss of heat from the radiator by turning up the amp. Mine (an aging Yammy) seems to run like a two bar fire.

That way both you and her are happy, right?
