Anyone seen this? I'm in the mood for some fierce black & white strangeness, so I was wondering whether this film was wildly intense or just dull. I know that it's strange, japanese and sci-fi-ish, but other than that I know nothing about it stylistically (I'm not really bothered by what it's about, more what it looks like). What can you tell me?

TIA

It's brilliant, stylish, brutal, intense, insane, scary and ingenious.

It's hard to describe what goes on without ruining the story (actually it's also hard to describe what goes on anyway), some of the chase sequences are so nightmarish and terrifying they remind me of actual bad dreams I have had.

I find it hard to put into words how amazing this film is, I saw it on channel 4 about 10 years ago and it's pace and insanity were like nothing I had ever seen. It uses a lot of fast edits, high speed camera work, bizarre angles and one very phallic prop!

The soundtrack is amazing, it reminds me of some of the more industrial tunes from the aphex twin, but it's all played by a band, not electronically done (like my stuff at http://www.mp3.com/h which takes a lot of influences from the tetsuo soundtrack, cheap plug ends ;) ) and really complements the tempo and intensity of the film.

It's not the easiest film to write about but, it's easily in my top ten films of all time, but it is something you are going to love or loath.... But if you are looking for "fierce black & white strangeness" this certainly fits the bill.

I'm trying to think of something to compare it to, but there is not much, I guess Darren Aronofsky's PI or Requiem For A Dream draw a lot from it style wise, some people (Michael Brooke being one) might even say Aronofsky has blatently ripped off Tsukamoto's style and I'd not disagree with that. But in looking for something to compare it with that you might have seen, that's all I can think of.

The only DVD version I know of is the R1 release (which I have), it's a non-anamorphic widescreen print, but it's a decent representation of the film with no extras. There may be other releases, but none that I know of.

Watch it, it's an experience...........

Adge has said so much stuff I'm not sure what (if anything) else I could say about it, it certainly is an experience, very very out there!

Fantastic film and the sequel is very good too. Not something you could take a girl to see on a first date, but mine liked it.
