View Full Version : XP won't log in - HELP!
As title really.
when i click on the little piccy to log me in, it comes up with "loading settings" and then immediately goes to "logging off".
i had some nasty little search toolbar that somehow got installed ("Windows SR 2.0" or something it was called), and i think that last night (when i found this out), was the first time that i'd tried to log in since i uninstalled the little blighter.
and it won't go in in safe mode either...
any ideas? :help:
Just as an idea, have you tried to boot without being connected to the net? (if you have always on connection)
And when you try and start in safe mode, what exactly happens?

same happens in safe mode, i get the piccy to login (except that "administrator" is there as well), and login (as any user) and i get the same thing.

i'll give it a blast, although whilst my user does not have a password (baaaaad!), the administrator one does, and i still have the same problem.
I should can clear out the security log by remotely "computer management"-ing it should i not?

I've had that problem before when the user profiile gets corrupted or the user directory deleted, so when u try to log on there are no settings there to load and it crashes back to the login screen.
Maybe find a way to check those?

i did wonder about that, but i can't even connect over the network to it. i suppose the next option (short of reformatting  ) is to clag that NTFSDOS thingy onto a floppy and try mooching around the C drive with that.

Have you tried running the Winxp setup from the CD and using the repair mode? I had a corrupted user profile and was able to get into the machine to create a new one after I done the repair from the installation CD.

There's a linux boot CD on the net that will let you reset the password to administrator - might be worth a try finding ? (would provide a link, but don't have one unfortunately and not sure the mods would be happy either)
