I have seen recordable DVD's advertised for the first time in the last few weeks.
They are to expensive for me at £1000 but has anyone got one,are they any good and will the price come down?

The price will come down.
Best to wait, especially with re-writable dvds due to 3 competing (incompatabile) formats.

Sony are said to be introducing a dual format DVD+RW/-RW machine next year (obviously it will be +R/-R compatible too).
I for one am quite happy to completely ignore DVD-RAM.
Yup just be patitient, no point in spending thousands on the recorder and £20+ on each DVD media. Once the new technology is commercially viable, the prices will drop bigtime. Eventually the DVD media will be comparable in cost to CDRW media, as will the actual recorders.
ahh 9.4gb per disc of recording ability ;-) Bye bye CDR ;-)

That would be a shame as it's probably the best format. Like all things though, its not always the best that wins.
Great review in What Video of the new Panasonic by the way.

I saw that review, though one should remember there is nothing inherently better about DVD-RAM; codecs will continue to improve, it's just that at this point in time the Pioneer's may be better than the Philips'.
The caddy system is a real loser though, even if in the future it may not be required.

Sony are actually just rebadging Pioneer Writers until the format war is sorted, they are NOT developing their own format currently, instead they are developing a new SACD/DVDA hybrid range for next year.

Sigh! But it was ok to spend £500-£600 on a decent S-VHS deck 2 years back, and the same on a decent DVD player! People WILL spend this much on a deck, as compared to the other models its cheap, and offers Tivo style features unlike the Philips and Pioneer/Sony models. You *WON`T* see a home DVD recorder deck below £700 for the next 12 months, look at japan, Pioneers 3rd year now with a recorder and its only dropped £800 since the first gen in 1998 came out (still over £1000).
Remember this very important fact:) A Cutting edge machine in the AV world is NOT like a PC. Every year to get costs down, the build / quality is sacrificed at the expense of price. Typical Example of this, Look at the original Sony DVPS715 DVD Player (Which the DVPS7700 is based on) - orignally £700, and every year since the build and reliability of the equivelant model has suffered to get the price down to the sub £350 mark, despite offering more features, and losing almost 3kg and adding a nasty plastic facia:)
Granted many people will not want to pay this, but, and its a big but, there are many more whom will who only a couple of years back paid £500-£600 for a half decent S-VHS VCR. Same applies to Sky+ and tivo:)
Rant over:)

Why? Out of the 3 formats, it offers the most flexability. Also, a major fact worth considering, is that the Panasonic WILL also rear & record onto DVD-R discs like the Pioneer/Sony Hybrids, unlike the Philips. Considering the price of discs is cheap (£5-£10 a disc) I don`t see what the problem is, its only the price of a good quality pack of S-VHS tapes
