I've spent the last hour on this one.

I've got a column of percentages and a column of final figures, but need to know the starting figure for each.

So, for example:

One figure says 98.7 which is an increase of 7.2% - what was the figure before the increase was applied?

It's doing my head in. Taking 7.2% away isn't the answer, as the percentage of the answer is bigger than the percentage added to the smaller figure -

Any ideas folks?

If I understand you correctly then the 98.7 figure is 107.2% of the original no. so divide 98.7/107.2 and multiply by 100. In this example the starting figure is 92.07

the figure before an increase of 7.2% = 98.7 / 107.2 * 100 = 92.07

edit:- its a one day job to learn how to type - that day for me has yet to arrive

That's right,

just use algerbra to work out the reverse.

original * 1.07 = 98.7

so to get the original take 98.7and divide by 1.07
