What are these like? A mate is thinking of buying one. How does it work? Do you burn straight to the DVD? Do you have to burn it all at once or can you go back later and carry on using the same DVD?

Works like a DVD recorder I'd imagine. Burns to DVD straight, you can stop and start recording as you like.
Personally I think MiniDV is better. For starters it's better quality and uses a much higher bitrate than DVD. There's less chance for error, unlike DVD where a dirty disc surface could ruin your recording.

Panasonic also do a RAM version of a camcorder.
It uses mini RAM (3") discs which cam then be used on Panasonic DVD players/Recorders.
