View Full Version : Falling Down
having just watched this again on dvd i really forgot just how good this film is. It hardly ever seems to get mentioned by anyone on these forums which is a shame as i think it is a totally under-rated film.
Both Michael Douglas and Robert Duvall are superb in it and much to my surprise was directed by Joel Schumacher!!!
I rarely like Michael Douglas but I thought he acted well in this. Duvall was superb - loved the fast food scene.

I enjoyed this too - as you point out, 2 quality performances (backed by some good support as well)
Whats the DVD like?

"Hey, you forgot your briefcase!!"
Classic.
unfortunately the disk isn't exactly inspired with only a non-anamorphic picture (which itself isn't wonderful but isn't really bad either) and only surround sound.
This film surely deserves better!
Though the price isn't too bad - £7.99 at play.com
Not sure about other regions

REwind list the R2 as 2.35:1 anamorphic

Agree! The Douglas character treads a fine line, just managing to retain the viewers' sympathies while teetering on the brink of paranoid xenophobia.
I always liked his line near the end where he says, disbelievingly, 'You mean I'm the bad guy?'
The section with the bazooka should have been cut though - an attempt at levity which stretches credulity to breaking point and undermines the rest of the film.

Not to worry my friend - ordered it anyway (£7.99, you can't go wrong really)
Cheers for reminding me about this classic :)
from what i've been reading on other sites the disk IS anamorphic, www.homecinemachoice.com state it as anamorphic and say that it is ok but nothing special.
From what i can gather the disk is the same from region to region quality wise (ie same picture and sound) though the region 1 has a 4:3 transfer as well and a theatrical trailer. So basically region 2 is the best considering the price.

I think he done himself proud recently, with Traffic (I loved that film), One Night At Mcools and Wonder Boys.
He also gets to sh#g Catherine Zeta Jones

Yeah, but on the plus side, he's made some good films recently.
The R4 edition is about £8 delivered from DeVoted. The disc is R2/R4 coded and anamorphic. One review I've seen reckons the transfer is average as Warner went for a cheapo single layer transfer. Imagine it's the same disc as the R2.

I liked the film. Had something to say and I think it was really the first time I noticed just how good Michael Douglas is.
Region 1 review (http://www.thebigpicturedvd.com/cgi-bin/master/viewer.cgi/Falling_Down)
Region 2 UK review (http://www.totaldvd.net/cgi-bin/discreviews.pl?code=857)
Region 4 review (http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/FallingDown.asp)
Agreed this is a special movie. I remember when i watched it for the first time, i was blown away by Douglas' character. The way he gives grief to everyone, especially the scene where he wants a Pepsi (or something) can be very funny in a twisted sort of way. Oh and the golf scene, great :D I have this on crappy 4:3 VHS and havn't upgraded yet. I'm tempted to watch it again as it is a classic and deserves the SE treatment.
Agree...great film. Although the "relationship" with Duvall and his wife does get on my nerves after a while. My favourite scene is the graffitti scene near the beginning.."it says all that?".
It's not a bad transfer considering it's Warner (just throw it on the disc and get it in the shops) Brothers.
Blimey. Do we have a film here that *nobody* dislikes?!
(Cos I think it's superb too. In the burger place: "What's wrong with this picture?")

The Sunday Express film reviewer (somebody called Chris Harvey I think) thought it was 'a turkey'. But then I disagree with most of his pronouncements so no surprise there.

Yep, it is a great film and the Region 2 dvd has an anamorphic transfer thats a little soft in some parts but overall its great and for £7.99 you can't go wrong.
Total film said something like this:
Falling Down is the ultimate oxymoron, a good Joel Schumacher film.

Great film. There is one scene that tells you all you ever need to know about golf.
And am I the only person who sees a Wizard of Oz type thing going on in the film? With Douglas following a sort of urban yellow brick road to try to get home. (Schumacher wrote The Wiz , BTW)

Oh yeah I absolutely love it!
What I wouldn't give to do some of the things he did without the consequences.
The film is so true :brickwall

I thought it was an excellent film as well.Watched it on video a few years ago.
I love that film! Saw it for the first time in a couple of years when it was on UKGold the other night... Excellent. Transfer quality there was awful (not to mention the fact it was shown in P&S) but remained reasonably watchable throughout. I won't be buying the DVD though, because, I expect a little better from DVD - and it'll be on the BBC channels in a couple of weeks.
PS - I am a Michael Douglas fan...:o

SPOILER This film is ruined by the ending. If only there was a directors cut where the smug cop gets wasted instead
