View Full Version : Browsing Speedup Tip

Thought I'd share a tip that speeds up web browsing. I'm on broadband and loading a thread in these forums would take around a second or two to initiate. I have my pages initiating (and loading) in less than a second thanks to this simple tip.

This tip works with ALL Windows 95/98/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 releases AND MS Internet Explorer 4/5/6/newer.
This Registry fix speeds up internet/remote (using Windows Explorer and/or Internet Explorer) browsing process considerably on most MS Windows 32-bit machines connected to a network/remote computer(s).
This actually fixes a BUG in MS Windows OSes that scan shared (remote) folders/files across network(s) for Scheduled Tasks and Printer Checking, and can add a delay as long as 30 seconds (!), because it uses extra time to search the remote computer(s). :(
First make sure *all* Windows Explorer and MS IE instances are closed.
Then run Regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace
In the left hand pane highlight these 2 subkeys:

{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF** = Scheduled Tasks
{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D** = Printer Checking

and delete them: right-click on each -> select Delete -> click OK.

RECOMMENDED: Export (BACKUP) this Registry key to a REG file FIRST, to be able to restore it (by running the REG file) if necessary. In Regedit: highlight the key name in the left hand pane -> click "Registry" from the menu -> select "Export Registry File..." -> type a file name in the "File name" field -> browse to the destination of your choice -> push the Save button.

This Registry change takes effect immediately.
Just start MS IE while connected to the network/internet to see the difference. :)

NOTE: Upgrading to a future MS Internet Explorer release or reinstalling it may add these values to your Registry *again*, therefore you may need to delete them *again* after (re)installing MS IE. :(

Just to clarify the word 'browsing' with regards to this tip - it means to improve network browsing rather than internet browsing.

You may want to change the order of the first post.

I followed all the instructions (worked well - thanks), and then I got to the bit that said make sure you backup your registry first

Doesn't surprise me. This registry delete is actually to prevent Win NT based computers from checking remote computers for scheduled tasks or printers when you attempt to browse the network. It won't have any effect on 9x computers and I have no idea why people would see a difference using IE under even NT based machines.

I use Firefox too sometimes and I've found that using this hack, sites load faster in I.E. (or avantbrowser) than in Firefox.

Many more windows tweaking tips can be carried out via X-Setup Pro (http://www.x-setup.net/downloads/) .This is a windows type interface which allows easy tweaking. Also if you explore the home page of the original post you will see that the guy who "wrote the code" is a member of the X-Setup team.;)
