First off let me say I'm not sure there is a perfect album because it all comes to personal choice in the end, something I love somebody else may hate, but What I mean is what is your perfect album? an album that you love every bit of from start to finish and could never tire of listening to.

2 albums for me would have to be:

The beach Boys - Pet Sounds

And

The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium

I just absolutly love both of these albums, there's a few more I thought about putting down But I'll just leave it at 2 for the moment.

So what are your perfect albums?

For me it would have to be,

Nirvana - Nevermind
Any Jimi Hendrix LP is perfection.

Pet Sounds is an excellent choice for perfection.

I would add: Miles Davis, In a Silent Way; Jeff Buckley, Grace; Herbie Hancock, Headhunters; Can, Future Days; a long list is brewing...

Television - Marquee Moon : Not a duff track on it.
The Clash - London Calling : Ditto
Marvin Gaye - What's Goin On? : Just the way it flooooows baby!
Love - Forever Changes

Saying that I must own 100's of records that have no dodgy tracks on them - would that make them a perfect record?

On the subject of Pet Sounds, while it is a classic record, 'Don't Talk' and 'I Just Wasn't Made For These Times' along with the two instrumentals, don't quite reach the heights of the other tracks...I still maintain it is a flawed masterpiece rather than a genuine perfect record.

The B-52's - The B-52's
Appetite For Destruction - Guns N Roses
Germ Free Adolescents - X Ray Spex
Live Through This - Hole (thank for the reminder Dan)

There's plenty of other albums that I love but these are the ones where there really isn't a duff track on them, rather than having some of my favourite songs on them and flowing well but maybe without the odd song I don't care much about.

This is a tough one. PERFECT is such a rare and subjective thing.

Contenders for me would be the following in no particular order.
I'm not picking anything i've bought in the last year or two as the "keep coming back for another listen years and years later" factor is important IMHO. These ones have legs for me.

Secret Messages - ELO
Eye In the Sky - Alan Parsons Project.
Heaven & Hell, China, Direct - Vangelis.
Equinoxe - Jean Michel Jarre.
2112 thru Grace Under Pressure inclusive - Rush (Come on September!!)
Wish You Were Here, Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell - Pink Floyd.
War Of The Worlds - Jeff Lynne & friends. :)
Master Of Puppets - Metallica.
Gretchen Goes to Nebraska,King's X, Dogman - King's X.
Secret Treaties, Revolution By Night - Blue Oyster Cult. (Would include Imaginos as well but can't stand the reworked Astronomy)
Strangers In The Night - UFO (Finest live rock album ever?)

Ah but you never mentioned that, you said "Metallica are the only band in history (IMO of course) to consistently churn out perfect records". By your selective picking "consistently" means just a three album period. Had you said Metallica are one of the few bands to release 3 perfect albums back to back then I wouldn't have posted although I'm sure some will still disagree.

'Bon Jovi' is better than 'New Jersey' and that isn't perfect by a long shot. 'Slippery...' has a couple of dodgy tracks (at least).

(if we were going to do nearly perfect albums then I will mention the first Pretenders album, which is absolutely super duperly perfect *other* than a 1 minute throwaway instrumental and that track is the only reason I didn't mention it in my original list)

No I'd agree with you...but then I'd omit Sgt Pepper for the same reason because of 'When Im 64' but that would be even more controversial I guess.

Abbey Road is 'more perfect' a record IMHO...

Ahh see I'd love both of those. I thought the Prince and Madonna team up on this album made it one of the best things she's ever done. Although I did very much enjoy the Music and Ray of Light albums, shame American Life was such :gag:

Stereophonics - Word Gets Around (I'd like to say Performance and Cocktails too but there's a couple that are blatently album fillers :( - still great to listen to though  )

Yellow Submarine was the first Beatles song I can remember hearing (more years ago than I care to remember) when I was a wee nipper of 3yrs.

That's how I can justify it, besides there are far worse songs out there that fill the charts nowadays.

Mansun - Attack Of The Grey Lantern
The Cooper Temple Clause - See This Through And Leave
The Who - Quadrophenia
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Natural Born Killers - OST (not sure if this counts as it's a sountrack)
Prodigy - Music for The Jilted Generation
Jeff Wayne - War Of The Worlds

Ringo Starr's singing could spoil any album, even his most tolerable vocal - With A little Help From My Friends - would be 300 times better with a McCartney or Lennon lead.

Rubber Soul is tarnished by the terrible What's Going On.

I think anyone who believes this can't possibly understand what the song's all about: The whole idea is the imperfection of Ringo singing it, not Paul.

Do you object to Bob Dylan or Hendrix because of their singing voices?

Yes it would. You're picking When I'm Sixty-Four as worst track over the tosh that is George Harrison on a prog-sitar kick? I think it's called Within You Without You or something, but I haven't ever been able to concentrate through it. It's a shame really because he did a similar sort of track as a b-side (it's on Past Masters Vol 2) and that's much better.

Personally I have never really thought much of LSD or the Benefit of Mr Kite. In fact, when that album does go on it's normally just the first two tracks and then the last two...

Abbey Road is 'more perfect' a record IMHO...

Well to be just as controversial I like Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Octopussy's Garden (which would be popular 'losers'), but find 'Because' intensely tedious. But it's probably my most favourite Beatles album, vying with Revolver and the White Album. :)

:oh-hum:

Yes, I would. When I'm 64 is horrid square music for grannies (though is marginally better than the :gag: tastic Honey Pie). McCartney didn't half write some utter cack, didn't he?

Nowt wrong with Within You Without You - it captures the dawn of a new age, blah blah blah.

I presume you mean The Inner Light. It is probably better than WYWY, it definitely kicks more ass (though kicking ass isn't really something I'd normally mention regards Indian mantras...)

I couldn't really care less, if it had been originally sung by McCartney, Lennon or Harrisson nobody would be crying out for a Ringo Starr vocal.

I hate Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Octopus's Garden too, but that's because they're rubbish songs. Sue me.

As for Honey Pie I like it in the context of the White Album. The only stuff I really can't stand on there is the last track on each CD, the country-tinged Don't Pass Me By, and the utter pointlessness of Revolution 9. :D

Okay - my lawyers will be speaking to your lawyers in the morning. ;)

I don't think it would sound bad with Macca singing it (no one else would have done, obviously) but it wouldn't have sounded better. Whenever I hear a cover of 'With A Little Help From My Friends' it's inveriably sung by someone who goes overboard, which is a shame as it's a good simple little song.

It's not bad because he sung it but because it's country, though. Worst. Music. Ever. Ever. :|

Strange selection coming up (I've got strange taste in music)

AC/DC - Let there be rock
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Megadeath - So far, so good, so what
Saracen - Heroes, Saints and Fools (not the new version)
Rush - Hemispheres

and another vote for:-
Michael Jackson - Thriller

If complilations are allowed I'd pick:
The Best Punk Album in the World; and
Melody Maker: State of Independents

DSotM is let down by the "sixth-form lyrics" IMO, rather than the songs. Musically, both albums are consistently strong, but Wish You Were Here is more honest in what it says, I reckon.

Ooh, now there's a much underrated album. I don't think it's perfect as it goes off a bit towards the end but it is fantastic - quite a departure and for once the experimentation worked.

I really should get this album. I saw Suzanne Vega last friday (Warwick Arts Centre), and the set she played was more-or-less the track listing of 'Retrospective'- great show, although the band drowned out her vocals a bit at times. Since then I've realised how much of her work I've never actually heard... and this album sounds particularly different/interesting....

It does have it's 'low' points.... but I think it's the contrast between the slower and faster songs that makes the album work as a whole :)

Had the album in the car for a couple of weeks recently, just great to listen to driving home from work on a summer day with the windows down :)

These are my fave perfect albums (perfect for me is 1. a classic album and 2. Sounding like a "Whole" album not like 62 producers worked on it or the band decided to record one side electric and the other accoustic)

Stranglers - The Raven
XTC - Skylarking (perfect for this time of year - probably the only true album that sounds complete as a whole package)
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady (can we have comps?)
Kenickie - At The Club
These Animal Men - Accident & Emergency
Big Country - The Crossing

Would love to say the following but they`re not complete enough:-

Possibly The Clash`s London Calling although I can`t make me mind up - Would probably rather go with their 1st album as it`s more consistant

Would love to say Manics Holy Bible but in a similar fashion to the Clash`s London Calling there`s a bit of a mixture.
