I tend to keep my PC pretty upto date with virus software, ad-aware and the like but I think something has gotten through and I cant for the life of me work out how to fix it.

Im running XP Pro - and for some reason it wont let me manage my PC (clicking on My Computer, Manage). Tried logging in as my administrator account too but it just flashes up for a second and goes away. Same happens when I try to defrag it - unless I do this from a command prompt. Tried managing computer by going through the control panel but still not having it. Does the same when I try to look at the local policies so I think some security policy has been set up that I can't get into to change.

Ive tried putting SP1 on again to see if this fixes it but nothing doing. Ad-aware and PC Bug Doctor don't pick anything up in the Registry either.

Anyone got any clues? Apart from that, PC seems to be OK.

What do you mean by click on my computer and click manage?
What are you trying to get access to?

The computer managment. You can get to this through Start - Settings - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management.

Everything within the Administrative Tools folder doesn't work - they flash up for a second then close before I can do anything.

If you look at event viewer (eventvwr.msc /s) have you got an strange errors?

Have you locked yourself out with any security policies (secpol.msc /s)?

Tried safe mode to see if you have the same problem?
Klez is a recent virus that has similar symptoms (there are a few other, can't remember the names though), also effected task manager, regedit and a few otherthings you would normally use to try and remove the virus.. What AV software are you using?
If it was a policy setting, it wouldn't flash the screen up at all, just refuse you.

Im using Avast - but have put AVG back on to see if that found anything - which it didnt.

Have tried getting into Event Viewer but even this wont work - even trying to run it from a command prompt.

try going to an online virus checker (symantec or panda) then try Spybot to see if it finds anything?

You could try the repair installation option from your XP CD.

Seem to have sorted it. Just turned it on and the Upload on my connection was being battered so had a look at what processes were running and one called winvlorer.exe was taking up a lot of the processor time so closed it and the problem stopped. Searched my system for this file, searched the registry and deleted all trace of it.

Tried Managing my PC again and it worked fine.

Dunno what winvlore.exe is or where it has come from but its gone now and I will be on the lookout in case it comes back!

It does seem a little rare - Google returns 2 hits (1 expired)! The forum post containing "winvlore" has a floowup saying that it's the W32.Spybot.Worm family - and you generally get it from Kazaa :nono:

I've not had chance to look up a definition on it but if its come from Kazaa I cant think what in, its either been in an MP3 or some Game Roms cause thats all Ive downloaded - and they must have been a while ago.

Im a bit concerned that my AV software(s) (Avast and AVG), plus Ad-Aware and PC Bug Fixer didnt pick up on it but hey, its working now!
