Are the UK R2 versions of these dvds anamorphic?
Also any general comments on audio/visual quality and subtitles etc. ie: are they removable? etc.
(much like the thread about "Jean de florette" and "Manon des sources")

La Reine Margot is -again- a very impressive UK release. There were a few problems with DVD player compatibility (Toshiba 2109 mainly) but hopefully that's been sorted.

A comment I pinched off the Web: "In French with English subtitles, the vibrancy of this anamorphic transfer is stunning. The street battle is deafeningly real, demanding a lot of the stereo soundtrack. The only extra is a trailer."

Shame it's not the longer version though which does plug some of the plot holes.
I've also read somewhere that the original cinematic ratio was 2.35:1. Any comments anyone?

I don't have the disc anymore but I think that quote is wrong!

I'd better remove it just in case :D

To answer your question about All about my mother, the R2 is non-anamorphic and has little or nothing in the way of extras; you'd be better off with the R1 which has a non-anamorphic cropped 16:9 (!) on one side of the disk and an anamorphic 2.35:1 on the other, plus a load of extras including an interview with Almodovar, making of and isolated score.

On the other hand, you can get the R2 from Play at the moment for £9.99 (and Live flesh also - review here (http://www.dvdtimes.org.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/region2/liveflesh.html)) at the same price.

Also doesn't work on Wharfdale 750s. Had 3 copys and all broke up early in the film.

Now I have another machine I've just ordered it from Play and hopefully this time I can actually watch it!
