View Full Version : Upgrading to ADSL - need recommendations!

My stepdad is getting broadband for the first time, and he's very anxious to get connected ASAP.

We want 512kbps-1mbps download speed (not necessarily all day - off peak most important), no monthly download restrictions, included e-mail and that's about it. Free modem/connection would be nice, but we'd be willing to shell out for these if the service is good enough.

Looking to pay £20-£25 a month, and it must be compatible with both PC and Mac, simultaneously.

I've looked at Bulldog, E7even, Firenet, Eclipse and Zen. My stepdad likes the look of Wanadoo, but I'm wary of the small print!

Any recommendations? Please?!

There are loads of threads on this if you do a search for it.

For what it's worth, I've been using Freedom 2 Surf and it's been great for me. Never been down in 5 months. I don't know about user support as I've never had to use them!

Cheers guys, Nildram looks good. I have actually already read a lot of the threads on this topic, but I'm still confused as to what makes one service provider better than another?

I recommended Nildram to my step-dad, but he seemed wary because it was more expensive than Firenet and didn't include modem and installation costs.

So, can anyone tell me: what makes Nildram so good? Also, does it offer unlimited downloads? And, if my step-dad HAS to go for a service that includes modem and installation, which one's the best?

Well, just wanted to let you know, soldave, that we're probably going to go with Freedom 2 Surf. ADSL Guide reckons their speed and reliability are good, and the price seems unbeatable for unlimited downloading!

Cheers for that!

You get what you pay for. Nildram may not be the cheapest but their quality of service and support are excellent.

Well I'm glad I could help with your choice. As I've said, they've been excellent with me so far. No downtime, and no support has been needed so far.

Let me know how it goes:)

I suppose it's all down to personal experioence. I manage 20+ Nildram ADSL connections and have never had a probelm with them. :) As for CS I admit you have to get through the first level of support to get to the really clever lot.

No doubt their connectivity is pretty solid but the support is flakey, they are becoming too complacent with outdated pricing models (i.e. charging £8.50 a month for an 8 block of IPs) and relying heavily on general goodwill of existing customers to stay strong. This wont last forever as many previous fallen giants will testify to - and as ISP migrations becoming easier and more affordable.

I used to recommend Nildram to everyone, I no longer do that. Besides that, many who joined on my recommendation have left or are in the process of leaving.
