For a decent gaming laptop, then look for one that has either the
Radeon Mobility 9700 or the GeforceFX Go5700 graphics chipset.
They are, currently, the best for gaming on the move. Saying
that, the Radeon 9600 PRO Mobility and GeforceFX Go5600 are
pretty good as well.
Perhaps something like this (http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_9100?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~page=1&~tab=specstab#tabtop) or even one of these (http://www.alienware.co.uk/system_pages/area-51m.aspx). Make sure you
get a decent Athlon / P4 CPU and stay away from Celeron
processors.
HTH
I have been put off Dell's with lots of bad experiances.
Would consider Sony Tosh or any other recommendations.
Anyon got this ??
Spec of the 64bit Athlon and Radeon card sounds awesome for the price.

For £1500 you're a bit limited, but Alienware make the best gaming rigs going.

THIS (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=58918) one would be better for games mate, and considerably cheaper :)
this weeks special from komplett looks good for the money

few quid extra to put more memory in it and you have a quality laptop.
i realise medion are a bit lesser but a friend has one and, other than being a bit heavier, it's not really much different to my toshiba.

I bought one of these (http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Product.aspx/TruHome/TruComputers/TruComputersLaptop/946451) and it's excellent. I've not got many games but what I've got plays perfectly (ie. Tiger Woods 2004, Comanche 4, Call of Duty, Medal of Honour, Black Hawk Down...........................)
Stick to Pentium as Athlon are pants in laptops (toooooo hot).
I know you've already discounted Dell, but I can highly recommend the 8600. I recently sold one with the 9600 Pro card in it to someone who specifically wanted it for gaming. He was well pleased with it. Very nice laptop, if a little on the heavy side - although nowhere near as weighty as the 9100 mentioned above.

I also have an 8600 and it is pretty good for games (128MB 9600Pro graphics). For your budget you could easily get one with a Pentium-M 1.7Ghz Cpu, which compares favourably to most Pentium 4 processors, but with significantly better battery life and it's quieter :) The HiRes widescreen is quite nice too :)

This Acer seems a steal at this price and spec. Gaming should be a breeze.

it appears you are right! this does seem like a great spec for the money.
if you read the reviews it says somebody got it cheaper elsewhere , which would appear to be here (http://www.technoworld.com/productdisplay.asp?ProductID=220%2D246%2D1500&source=kelkoo) at around £810 delivered, or here (https://www.acernotebooks.co.uk/acersite/asp/product.asp?recorprod=1&product=166&cat) at around £820 delivered)
bit tempted myself.......

Harping on about Dell again I'm afraid, but last night I ordered an outlet 8600 for a mate. 1.7Ghz Pentium-M, 512MB Ram, 60GB (7200RPM) HD, 128MB 9600Pro, 4x DVD+RW, WSXGA screen and 802.11b/g wireless with 3 years warranty for 800 quid delivered.
What desktop speed would a 1.7Ghz P M relate to ?

In theory it is roughly equivalent to a pentium 4 3Ghz. In reality, in some operations it will be faster, in some slower. The real benefit is that it runs much cooler (an quieter) than the pentium, with significantly better battery life.
If neither is an issue for you, then the 64bit athlon cpus will offer the best performance in games. Either way, try to get a one with a 128MB of graphics ram to make the most of the 9600/9700/5600/5700 chip.
Cool thanks Brunnen-G did not realise how powerful laptops were these days....
