View Full Version : Tomb Raider
Brief review:
Film: entertaining action, not much story, a bit like playing a video game (surprise).
Transfer: Video very good - little of the dreaded edge enhancement.
Audio: A good system workout.
Angelina: Gorgeous
Disc - It has some sort of RCE on it. I can't test this conclusively, but it definitely has a static menu page with "wrong region" text on it.
was it a film? I thought it was an advert for landrover and mobile phones.

Are you sure? Paramount haven't used any such measures before? & I had no message when I played the disc.

No, I'm not sure (should have been obvious from the text).
I have a manual/auto multiregion Pioneer 737. If I set it to R2 then it WILL play most "normal" R1 discs. But on known RCE ones, it displays a static menu page. With Tomb Raider, when set to R2, it displays a static menu page (plain blue, "wrong region" text) i.e., just like a RCE disc. But, as I said, I'm not sure. It's clearly more than the standard firmware check that "normal" R1 discs do - but it may not be exactly RCE.

I enjoyed Tomb Raider. Maybe I'm easily pleased...mmmmm Angelina Jolie... ;)
...but seriously I thought it was a fun summer blockbuster which was very faithful to the videogames (of which I am a big fan so maybe I'm biased). Chris Barrie was great but underused and the effects were good. OK so the story was a no brainer, but I don't think all movies need to be complex or thought provoking to be enjoyable.
As for the DVD, sound and picture are excellent and the special features are pretty good.
Overall:
Film B
Story C
DVD sound A
DVD Picture A
Extra Features B
Angelina A :D

Finally got round to watching this last night and I thought it was pretty good. It certainly doesn't ask anything of you other than to sit back and enjoy. Brainless fodder it might be, but if you like the Mummy films and Indiana Jones then this is along the same kind of lines and has some very pleasing moments.
Good review that covers why people wanna watch this ! ;)

For the first time ever i came out of the cinema a little dissapointed in a film. Granted at the time a had a headache and the DTS soundtrack didn't help matters, but i really thought it was quite naff. I find it strange because i can find good points in most crap films, Godzilla, Lost in Space etc.
Alright Angelina was a good point in the film (a great Lara IMO) but the film left me a little puzzled, partley because i couldn't find out why i didn't like it. I think it was just the general story and some or the most rubbish dialogue. For example [ not a spoiler]and excuse my vagueness as the memories a bit hazy, but a shot where it pulls up to the bad guy (forget him sorry) who is in the jungle. The camera shot is fairly dramatic where i'm expecting something interesting to happen or be spoken and what does he say..........'Good'.
It must just be me as i was the only person who laughed at the stupidity of that bit. Still i wouldn't rule out buying it as i suppose it is a good film to pass time but sadly not one i'm am rushing out to get.
