Hi

Not sure if anyone can help me with this or not, but here goes ...

I'm using XP Home & have a Nokia 6310.

I want to transfer info, via IR, from the phone to the PC. I've installed the software from the CD that came with the phone and it appears to be working.

I've set my phone to IR and it also seems to be working (getting an occassional "ping" on my PC, complete with icon to confirm the 6310 is in range).

However, from the options menu for the Nokia software, when I select Nokia Content Copier, I run into a problem.

I select Copy data from phone to PC & next, I am brought to a "connect source phone" message. Source phone is showing as "unknown" so I select "connection" (as directed) & get a new box opening (called Nokia Connection Manager) with 3 different options (2 cable connections & 1 IRDA connection).

The IRDA connection is ticked, I press "select" but the message continues to tell me "No phone connected".

This problem is repeating and preventing me from being able to establish the IR connection between the phone & PC. Any thoughts ?

Regards

Ok Read all first and make sure you do everything in sequence! This is how i get mine to work.

First change the port speed of the IrDA device from 4mbps to 115,200 under hardware in device manager. Once changed reboot your machine.

Next open Nokia Connection Manager and deselect every thing except the IR Button. Important leave Nokia Connection Manager open and then activate the IR Function of the phone and place in front of your PC \ Laptop IrDA port.

The phone should now be detected.

I have the same problem however and if I activate IR on the phone first and place infront of the PC it never works. I have to open Connection Manager and then Activate Ir on the handset.

Hi maddogsuk

Many thanks for your help, much appreciated m8

I won't get a chance to try this for a day or so, but fingers crossed this will work.

Quick question: If I follow your instructions above, will this interfer in any way with the connections for my internet dial up access ?

cheers

On Windows 2000 with hotfix Q252795 or Service pack 2 and a Standard XP installation Nokia and Other manurfactures handsets with built in IrDA modems are recognised as "Standard Modems or IR" and drivers installed as soon as the mobile IrDA was activated.

Under dialup networking you specify the modem to connect to the internet. If this modem wasnt available XP might try and dial using the 6310 if its IrDA is activated and in range of your PC ir port as this would be an active modem.

However you PC should always dial using your Selected Modem unless its not available.

You would soon notice, browsing the net using the 6310 as a modem isn't the fastest!

Again, many thanks :)

- I'll report back as soon as I've tried the above

... as for teh 6310 being a slow modem, cant be any slower than I am stuck with at the moment  (19,200 bps at a push via Eircom's bloomin telephone line... sadly, in Ireland we are stuck with no choices on phone provider and Broadband is limited availability and still somewhat expensive @ circa£30 per month after instalation and modem of approx £100)

IR is a bit of a nightmare with phones and PCs. Mine's stopped working for some reason when it was working okay for ages. It's worse with the 7210 than it was with the old 7110. They're difficult to set up properly, mainly due to BIOS settings in the PC, and in certain modes you may find it works for some things and in other modes works for others, but difficult to get everything working okay.

P.S. Download the latest software from Nokia's web site. The stuff shipped with phones is usually very out of date, and the stuff on their site can be a lot better. Apparently you can also download any for any Nokia phone and it will work. This is handy in case the page for your phone only has an older version but another phone's page has a newer version posted.

The biggest problem I have seen is the BUAD rate the IrDA port is set to. Usualy sticking at 115,200 solves most problems.

Yeah, and from what someone at Nokia I know says, you can just download the highest number version and it works with them all ;)

Though I know from experience that sometimes you have to get the firmware on the phone updated.
