View Full Version : Is it just me or is Buffy rubbish.......??
Probably opening myself up for abuse here but I really dont like it which is strange as this is the type of thing I would normally like??
I guess it doesnt help that I am one of the few men in the world that doesnt foam at the mouth at the mention of Sarah Michelle whatsername!!
So am I missing something or is it just crap?
You will get abuse - I did when I said I didn't like Groundhog Day.
Although I think more people will be with you on this, than were with me!
For the record - Buffy is crap and SMG is a dog :D
Gimmie the original Buffy movie any day.

Oh dear oh dear! You have just insulted my beautiful Sarah Michelle Geller! ;)
Seriously though, I adore it, but I respect that you have your own opinions on it
If i'd never seen Buffy before and heard the premise - i.e Young girl fights vampires with friends and deals with growing-up - i would be as dubious as you.
However, once i took the plunge and bought the season 1 dvd when it first came out I was astounded at the overall quality of it. You will struggle to find better writing anywhere on television over 6 full seasons and people who simply dismiss it are missing out on a treat.

Feel like I’m trapped in a bad straight to video flick "Invasion of the Trolls". Who cares, quite frankly, what you think about anything? If you’re too dim-witted to even justify why you don’t like something with reasons then perhaps you should go do some colouring in, Try and stay inside the lines with those crayons.
Goes for you too Bolch.

Bolch - we Groundhog Day haters should get together and make a stand against fools!
On to the point, Buffy's not classic stuff, but it's mildly diverting pap. Problem is, the fans seem to be taking it too seriously, and I guess in later series it'll have much more self-importance (I've only seen series 1 & 2). The same problem resulted in me giving up on the X Files during series 3.
How they can try and do it vaguely seriously, when minor vampires are staked in seconds, yet characters like Spike are given a ludicrous amount of lucky escapes, I really don't know.
Oh, and Sarah Michelle Gellar has a really strange nose. And is it just me, or does the guy who plays Xander want to be Bruce Campbell when he grows up? Oh, and don't get me started on the accents.
Personally, when it comes to daft TV, I'd rather watch Xena. At least there's no danger of that ever being taken seriously. Plus, they have the real Bruce Campbell.
Feel like I’m trapped in a bad straight to video flick "Invasion of the Trolls". Who cares, quite frankly, what you think about anything?
Then why are you reading what other people think?
If you’re too dim-witted to even justify why you don’t like something with reasons then perhaps you should go do some colouring in, Try and stay inside the lines with those crayons.

Whats your problem? I was asked if I liked it and I replied. Did Zander ask for opinions or a discussion? Go back and re-read the original post. Then if you feel up to come up with a relavent reply to this thread, I think you're just a repressed Groundhog Day lover :p

I take it from your overly aggressive response that means you like it then??
I am not trying to impose my opinion on anyone else, maybe just try to understand the attraction as there is obviously a large following.
I have only seen a dozen or so epidodes and the plot lines seemed thin and similar. Also watching a little girl kick the crap out of many enormous vampires seemed a little silly??
So wind you neck in and let people share their opinoins as this, as far as I can tell, is what these Forums are for.

That's absolutely right! I thought it was gona be crap, but it's a very well written, witty and funny campy series that gets better and better. If you don't like Sarah that much, there's always Willow and Giles, they are awesome and the show would be nowhere without them two.

It's a class program and my wife is superb in it. Sod Kristy Swanson - Buffy is SMG.
Personally, I thought series 2 was the best yet, and even I'd have to say it hasn't reached those heights since.
Some people don't like it, but hey, that's life I suppose!

I've watched about 6/8 episodes of Buffy and I just couldn't get in to it. Don't fancy buying the first series though on the off chance I do :)

Apparently my opinons as to the intent of these types of threads are in the minority so I will refrain from posting in them.
She's not ugly or anything but now you mention it she has got a bit of an odd conk!!
I do quite like the one that was in American Pie but only when she was at band camp!!!!
I’m reading it because you and your pals have been filling the forum with this bilge for days now and I’ve had enough.
What's this bilge I've been filling the foums with? Mail me cos I want to continue this I want to know what your problem is with me but don't feel it fair to continue in this thread/forum. Is it cos I don't like Groundhog Day?
btw - If you've had enough you know where your phone line is.
BTW - Its you, because Buffy isn't rubbish.

BTW, opinions are exactly what he asked for:
So am I missing something or is it just crap?
I leave it up to others to decide what exactly is missing.
Why is this bilge, I wanted to start a thread to open a discussion on something I dont understand.
As for trolling, maybe comments like that are why. Every time a new member opens a topic they get savaged by senior members. I have been coming here every day for a couple of months and am only recently starting to feel the confidence to contribute/join in.
Unfortunately I dont have a lot of knowledge about the whole 'home cinema' type world. By spending a while watching this forum it has helped me get a little more understanding to the point where I dont feel like a total spaz and MAY.... not be completely savaged every time I open my metaphorical mouth.
I respect the fact that someone has said they dont like it, but at the same time, without any reason, the comment is then unjustified.
Personally i think its a great program. In later series' of the show it fuses a *lot* of humour with emotion and action. Take Spike for example, without him, then later shows would be useless. I own all 3 seasons on DVD and now consider them to be a paramount feature of my collection.
Fair enough the initial idea of a girl hunting down vampires etc didnt appeal much to me at the start, but after a few episodes, it really changed my opinion on it. Give it a try.
(BTW t'was good to start the thread considering you nearly share your username with one of the main characters. ;) )
As far as literate, mass-consumption, genre TV goes I think it's marvellous.
(I acknowledge and apologise for the fact that this response actually references the original question.;) )
Why does somebody say something is "crap" and then don't back it up with any reasonable explanations? I acknowledge the fact you don't like something but please back it up with something more than "SMG is a dog".
Personally I think its a great slice of TV that treats the viewer with some intelligence. Interesting storylines with continuing consequences all delivered by very capable and engaging actors. Hilarious one moment, very sad in others it pulls all the right strings for a very good TV show.
Is it just me or is anybody else bored with these "......... is crap" threads?

Apologies for the harshness of my earlier comments. ggrant phrases it as perhaps I should have. Opinions backed up with solid reasons are fine, it’s just this "It’s crap" kind of comments without foundation that seem to be all too prevalent lately that have gotten on my nerves.
Apologie accepted, friends? :)
I'd also like to apologise for my comments on Buffy. Personally I watched the original movie ages before the TV series. Upon watching the T.V series I was disapointed it wasn't more like the movie. I watched it a few more times but couldn't get into it. I think the soundtrack had something to do with it as well.
Off topic to is Buffy good, I know people like SMG. But I don't think she's gorgeous (she's not bad) or a talented actress. She seems to have developed a big head based on the success of Buffy. I read somewhere she reckoned that her lesbo kiss in Cruel Intentions was 'going to be the biggest masterbation scene in a mainstream film'. That put me off her and everything she does for good.
How it can beat Wild Things to that mantle I'll never know:D
I also appologies. For the 'is it crap' thread. My intention was not to make a flippant coment but purely to start a discussion on something I was actually interested on hearing some feedback on.
Perhaps a better title would have been:
I dont understand the attraction of Buffy, could someone explain please.
Anyway I think I have my answer, thanks to all those with contructive comments to make. Again appologies to those I have offended.
No. Modern life is rubbish!!!!!!!!!111111111111111 :p

Personally I find it boring, but I've only tried watching it once or twice. Most of the people I work with seem to like it well enough. Each to their own, I guess.

If your not prepared to watch every episode of Buffy then you simply won't understand the attraction.
Each series is like 1 massive episode, therefore watching a dozen or so episodes is rather like watching minutes 56 - 60 in a 3 hour film, and then coming to the conclusion that the whole film was crap because you couldnt get into it.

As someone who has loathed the X-files, most American sitcoms (apart from Seinfeld and The Simpsons, although I've never been that sold on either of them), and just about every obsessive-fan-attracting TV show ever made, it came as a bit of a surprise to me as to how much I enjoyed Buffy; I think it's a terrific programme, combining wit, excitement, thrills, intelligence and genuinely interesting characters.
If you don't like the programme, why do we need threads devoted to slagging them off for the sake of it? For the record, I like Groundhog Day too.

The thread wasnt about not liking it and slagging it off, as I mentioned in other responses I dont get it and was asking those of you that do to let me know what the attraction is.

Whther you like Buffy or not I would say that the floowing shows most definately do not fall into the categoru of garbage
Oz
The Sopranos
Homicide:Life On The Street
The Simpsons
Futurama
South Park
Hold on, I love the show but I don't really know why its good. Good scripts with humour integrated seamlessly into the show seem to be the only reasons I can come up with...

personally i think buffy is superb. i don't see why people actively have to slag it off, no ones's forcing you to watch it or buy the dvds.

Some of series five did have less humour in it then other series. It doesn't take itself very seriously and that's why it works (imho). It has enough humour to balance out the more serious parts and works well.
It's not brilliant but it is very well written (usually) and does what it's meant to do, entertain.
Though I can see why some people would hate it, different things for different people.

I think this is one of the best things and worst things about the show.
The first few seasons could pretty much be watched as seperate episodes without feeling too in the dark, even though there was an overall bigger storyline. Season 4 onwards changed and was very much more difficult to get into if you hadn't seen the earlier ones.
It's good that they can have such good and long storylines but it does put off a lot of people from watching as there is often no initial hook to grab you. You have to sit and watch many episodes before you 'get it' which when it may not appeal to you in the end would be a waste of your time.
Personaly as I've seen all of them it doesn't bother me but I can see it would be very off putting to a casual viewer and probably wouldn't welcome them in.

Everything that's on at the moment minus:

The 1% (approx) refers to repeats of high qauality including:

Another Buffy fan, here.
Can't stand all the other fan obsessed shows like Star Trek, X-Files, Red Dwarf etc...
But God darn it, Buffy's got me hooked.
I started watching mid way through season 3 on Sky purley because there was nothing else on at the time and i've been hooked ever since. It's incredibley well written for a show of it's type ( If you don't agree watch Vampire High and see how bad it could be. ) and the humour is surprisingly sharp and self mockin.
I've said this before, but I thought it was typical American pap, but once when there was nothing else on I decided to give it a chance and watch an episode.
I watched hush from season 4 and was amazed at how it good it was, so I decided to watch some more and found them to be brilliant quality.
It’s extremely well written, funny and intelligent with lots of clever cultural references and nods to other films/tv shows. I find it engrossing television. I do not watch it for the T&A, I watch it for the well written television.
I think some are hard to get into if you watch them out of sequence or context, I liken it to a comic, you can pick up X-Men 164 (God, I’ve become comic book guy from the simpsons), read it and enjoy it, but it makes more sense as part of a greater picture.
If you would have asked me a year ago I’d have told you it was crap, but after giving it the time I’m a fan.
Like Arch Stanton I don’t watch X-Files, Star Trek or any other series like that, buffy is an exception to my viewing pattern.

Same here. Didn't see the attraction initially but after sharing a house with a fan who had people over to watch it I found myself watching it and getting sucked in.

I suspect this may start to bug me (the X Files seemed to be heading a similar way when I gave up on it). Although I don't mind continuing storylines, they shouldn't be to the detriment of the single episode's story. If that makes any sense. Possibly a good example to illustrate my point is the Phantom Menace. All very good at setting up the story to follow, but **** as a story in its own right.

There are still some single episode storys but they are much more driven by the overall story line.
