I 've read on HCC site that Anchor Bay have got the rights to produce WW's back catalogue. Is this something to cheer about? Will it be worth waiting to see what AB come up with or are there decent tranfers of his films already available?

There are transfers out there but few and far between. I'm unsure about their quality though but haven't heard too bad reviews of them...

Paris Texas and the Wings of Desire are duye out in France at the end of this year so I expect that's worth while keeping your eye on and I'll probably be getting them as they have a commentary track - so keep your eyes on DVDtimes for reviews this january!
As for P,T it's in english so subs are not an issue (although the commentary may be in French as ww as v. good French) but for the other one that could be a problem

Oh no. I feel that the five hour cut of Until the End of the World cannot be far away.

Insomnia sufferers rejoice.

Looks like the french version of Wings of Desire / himmel uber Berlin / Les Ailes du désir will only have french subs, and www.dvdfr.com (http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=4286) list the commentary and interview as "VF" i.e. "Version Francaise", so not much for non-french speakers on these disks.

Subs don't matter on Paris, Texas , but the extras look to be VF again.
(see here (http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=4298) ).

Both are out Dec 4th

I have the Spanish release of Paris, Texas and it's far superior to anything I've seen previously.

The Region 4 (http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/Reviews.asp?ReviewID=504) disc doesn't look particularly great -cheap though.

Was there really a five hour cut?

I read that Anchor Bay intend to release a series of special editions, with extra features and newly recorded commentaries by Wim Wenders.

Last time I checked they weren't mentioned anywhere on the AB website, so the release dates are probably way off :( . When they do arrive they should go nicely with the AB Werner Herzog discs :)

"Was there really a five hour cut?"

...unfortunately, it seems the answer to that question is yes...

Is Wings of Desire the one that City of Angels is a hollywood remake of? If it is the one I'm thinking about I watched a clip of the Wim Wenders original once and found it very powerful. Can people recommend any other of his films, I watched Paris Texas and wasn't too keen on it though.

mmm... if you weren't too keen on PT I don't really think you'll like the wings of desire... It's pretty much in the same vein... Those who find PT to be chronically slow and self-indulgent think the same of WofD.

What a silly post. I'm back cos I chose to be plus I don't recall saying I was leaving 'for good'.

Well that does sound like something worth waiting for, unfortunately it also sounds like it going to be a long wait.

I think I'll be the judge of that but thanks for answering a question I didn't ask. Are you an MP or something?:D

Can someone please answer my question is City of Angels a rip off of Wings of Desire?

I think Hollywood would prefer 'remake' than rip off but it's best referred to as piece of shi'te.

Now do you mean Wings of Desire or City of Angels?

I think it’s safe to say that APPRIA40WR is referring to City of Angels.

I’d recommend the soundtrack to Wings of Desire as a good intro to the movie as it also has dialogue snippets woven into the music: A good taster if you haven’t yet seen this brilliant movie.

Sorry about that! For recommendations of other WW films I'd recommend:

the American Friend
Until the end of the world
Buena vista social club (a great documentary)
and the aforementioned films...

I like most of his stuff although he's been losing form recently with some under par releases - The End of Violence had its moments but seemed to fall apart at times... Hopefully, he'll be able to top his eighties peaks again...

I have a copy and haven't seen it yet, therefore can't comment, but you can get the R2 of Million dollar hotel for £7.99 from Play247 (http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=83752).
