Hello there,

I just bought a new HDD and have to state right now that i am a complete amateur when it comes to hardware installation...

Anyway, the harddrive has been plugged in, device manager recognises it, when the master harddrive is unplugged and then the computer started it states that its found a slave drive and gives the new drives details.

However, it does not show up in My Computer. :suspect:

A second question; once its installed, will it be possible to simply 'clone' the old drive onto it and then switch the new drive to be the main one. Or will i have to install windows onto the new drive seperately then copy things across?

If that made sense to anyone then any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

I assume you're using XP, if so then go to Control Panel, then select Administrative tools, then Computer Management, click Disk Management on the left hand side. You should now see your new hard drive and you will have to format it.

Second question: This can be done using something like Norton Ghost

If your new drive is a Seagate, and they still 'do' the service, they offer an on-line transfer of files via their diskwizard software.

Free and easy
