View Full Version : "Comedy" films that turned out not to be quite that....
After watching "Dude, where's my car?" the other day, and remembering that I didn't laugh once at Spy Hard, are there any other films billed as "comedies" that didn't quite hit the mark for you?
Dude, Where's My Car?
Spy Hard
Hot Shots
Hot Shots Part Deux
Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot etc are a few I can think of.
Evolution for one and remember Morons From Outer Space(Griff Rhys Jones and Mel Smith)truly awful.

I'm afrais I did laugh during the Hot Shots movies, not as often the makers would have hoped I suppose, but Lloyd Bridges did do some funny stuff.
I guess my main nominations for "not at all funny" would be:
1) Anything at all with Chevy Chase in it.
2) Jay and Silent Bob in Dogma . I'm assuming they were meant to be funny, tho' actually they were just adolescent and slightly embarrassing (and being funny without speaking requires more than just pointing and nodding a lot)
Didn't realise it was them in Dogma.......
Couldn't be as unfunny as DWMC? where
"What's the tattoo on my back say?"
"Sweet?"
"What's the tattoo on my back say?"
"Dude"
"No, what does the tattoo on MY back say?"
"Sweet"
and keep repeating for a while, before repeated the whole "joke" later on in the movie again......

There's Something about Mary....the slightly amusing parts were in the trailer.
hmm, I agree with There's Something About Mary - disappointing.....however, my number one movie which has to be about as funny as Osama Bin Laden is easily MEET THE BLOODY PARENTS - simply awful......

Meet the Parents & those bloody terrible Austin Powers movies.
Arthur with Dudley Moore.
Started to watch it and even though there are scences that pass for comedy I found it to be a more romance type film as opposed to comedy.
On the other hand Ten with Dudley Moore is funny.

The Waterboy was excruciating rather than amusing.
Also, practically anything with John Candy in it (particularly Planes, Trains & Automobiles)

I would say anything in the last five years that's claimed to have been a comedy has been anything but.

Can I hazard a guess that you haven't seen The Dish or Together, two of the most sheerly delightful films I've seen in years?
Getting back on topic, albeit slightly slanted, one of the main reasons Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy was such a box-office catastrophe is that rather too many people were expecting a comedy, and with a fair amount of justification, given the title and Jerry Lewis as co-star...
I dunno if I missing something, but I just don't find Adam Sandler funny either....or Chris Rock, except I'll let him off in Dogma!

speaking of Chris Rock... his AWFUL movie "Down to Earth" is a prime candidate of the UNFUNNY variety..
YAWN.. SCRATCH...SNIFF... YAWN... COUGH..

There have been quite a few in recent years IMHO:
• The Cable Guy
• Liar Liar
• Kingpin
• Meet the Parents (glad I'm not the only one who didn't like this)
• Scary Movie
• The Austin Powers films

Poor you - I finally caught up with it on Monday and absolutely loved it! The blatant Disney ****-takes alone made it laugh-out-loud funny.

Almost any movie that's intended to be solely a comedy is NOT funny at all.
Action movies are funnier than comedies.
Sci-Fi/horror flicks are funnier than comedies.
The most funniest films are sarcastic depictions of real people in real situations, or so called black comedies, now they're really funny. For example see Hurlyburly and The House of Yes
Besides Friends and Fawlty Towers I don't find any comedy film or sitcom funny, ever.
I think I must be strange, I like quite a lot of the films mentioned in this thread i.e. Dumb & Dumber, KingPin, Something about Mary. All very silly but damn funny!! I even really liked Meet the Parents!!
Having said that:
Dude Where's my Car was so bad I almost turned it off!!
Austin Powers 1 & 2 - just didnt find them funny regardless how many time my friends told me I was stupid.
Waynes World 2 - Awful even though the first one was so superb!
