View Full Version : NBK - To add insult to injury
Well NBK is finally out on R2 come monday albeit in the butchered R rated US cinema version, to add insult to injury FilmFour will be showing the full uncut Director's Cut in November! Great news for dvd fans huh
I used to have FilmFour, but cancelled my subscription as I thought the content got worse and worse. It's just good that I have the fully uncut director's cut region 4 DVD in my hands then.
Anyone with any sense can get the Region 4 disc for around £12 from EzyDVD (http://www.ezydvd.com.au) anyway.
Well yeah, I'm just saying it's a little daft the R2 DVD is cut down, when the longer uncut version will be shown in the UK
Who is handling the UK release of NBK?

There's a big difference in that videos and DVDs have to be classified by the BBFC by law. Films on a subscription TV channel don't.
And the BBFC can only classify what they're sent to classify.
Good news is that review copies of the R2 "butchered" version have been praised for excellent pic. & sound quality - I will be getting the R2 Box Set AND the R4 Dir. Cut as I don't have Film Four but I want to see them both.
You guys are kind of missing the point!
The region 4 DVD by Trimark also has excellent picture and sound quality, and Oliver Stone said somewhere that he thought that the R-rated version of the film didn't make sense.
It's a weird film, but a great one though.

Just buy the the Region 4 or Region 1 DVD!
Warner may not own the 'director cut' version in the UK or there could be rights problems.
As for Channel 4 showing it they are legally obliged to show films that have a BBFC certificate -however- if the film has no certificate (like the director cut) then they can show it but the film is still regulated by the ITC etc.

I think you are all missing the point - I think he's saying that R2 has waited till last to get NBK and the release the weakest version of it, then a few days later the DC will be shown on TV uncut.
Its also madness (possibly) that we are too innocent to watch the DC on DVD but on TV we are immune to the catastophic effects of the demon disk! Damn stupid!
I'm sure its the distributors chouce but its maddening all the same.
I (think I) know for a fact that he has the NBK R4 disc already, he's making a point about how R2 have been screwed again by the distributor.

The actual reason is that the DVD is distributed by Warner Bros who - believe it or not - only own the rights to the R-rated version.
The Director's Cut was flogged off to Trimark after Warner made it clear that they weren't interested in releasing it. Presumably a similar deal was struck with an Australian distributor - and indeed FilmFour.
As an MPAA signatory in the US, I think Warner is under some kind of obligation to release films no stronger than an R - this is a problem that has bedevilled all sorts of other films, most notably/notoriously Eyes Wide Shut (though there, as it was a 100% Warner production from the start, they owned the rights to all versions and released the unrated version internationally)

It's been much discussed before, but the R2 *Danish* disc carries the director's cut, etc., etc. and it only costs about 8 quid inclusive from places dvdoo.

Has it's 'off' weeks (or months), but Film 4 has picked up a lot recently, particularly with the extra channels they have (unless you're an NTL sucker and don't get the extra channels even though you pay for it :D - tip: ditch NTL!).
Problem I find is getting the time to watch what I want. I went through this months magazine and must have highlighted at least a couple of films per day that I'd like to see which is about 60 in a month!. I'm particularly trying to watch stuff I've never heard of but sound good and generally find they're excellent (hence their advertising of "great films you know and great films you don't"). There's a fair amount of stuff that I wouldn't bother buying on DVD. I love to watch a lot of stuff on Film 4 World, but just don't have the time (I've also usually got at least 20 DVDs to watch at any one time).
I may give NBK uncut a chance but I was never interested in Mr. Stones interpretation of it really.
Evil Dead is also uncut this month on Film 4, and they've got the first UK TV showing of Clockwork Orange (though I've got the DVD).
Big bonus is Film 4 shows almost everything anamorphic, including many 1.66:1 films, but the downside is they still often crop 2.35:1 to 1.85:1 (but not always). Picture quality on Sky digital through RGB is excellent... just need Sky+ and for them to upgrade to Dolby Digital and I'd be sorted.
A million times better than any of Sky's film channels in my opinion.

I disliked the R-rated cut intensely in the cinema - in fact, there were several points in the first 45 minutes where I seriously considered walking out - but found myself rather more impressed by the full version on video than I was expecting to be. So I'd give it a chance.

That's an intereseting point. I saw NBK at the cinema and didn't like it so have never bothered watching it on video. Think I might give the R4 a go now though.

I refused to watch this at the cinema (looked awful) and I never got a chance to watch it on video (thanks to the self-censoring Warner UK) so my first view of it was when Channel 5 showed it (to a few complaints of course).
I loved it and thought the DC was even better. I'm sure there's prolly another 60mins of footage kicking about somewhere though :D
Never could fiugre out out whether to call NBK "insult" or "injury", although I strongly suspect it's the former.
I mean, I don't mind a dyed-in-the-wool Hollywood filmmaker trying his hand at hamfistedly using techniques put in place all these many years by the underground "experimental" movie mob but... Aw, what the heck... Scratch that, I do mind.
Didn't the region 1 Warner Bros. disc get the most inferior version of it? Or is it a draw between the two?

You won't often hear me defending Oliver Stone, but I do think it's a little unfair to slam him as a "dyed-in-the-wool Hollywood filmmaker"!
Whatever you think of his work, he does at least consistently pick difficult, not obviously commercial subjects and doesn't exactly take the glossy Hollywood approach to them either. And the style of NBK is entirely consistent with the film's aims - it's as much a satire of the way the media (which includes the underground media) glamourises violence and killing.
True, his approach isn't what you might call subtle - one of the reasons I prefer the film on the small screen is that it could do with a bit of shrinkage! - but it is at least justified.

As of November 1st, us poor NTL users get all four channels too, for no extra charge!:D
So I disagree with your first statement and tip, but agree wholeheartedly with your last sentiment;)

Don't take much (JFK, Salvador, Nixon) to see that Ollie --for all of his "bad boy working within the system" posturing-- is steeped to the core in the murky Hollywood tradition of story-telling. Which, incidentally, may be the only redeeming value I saw in NBK -- i.e. the obvious wish and frantic attempt to break away from same. Malheureusement botched, IMO. Much the same applies for "U-Turn".

Fair enough, but it's been a long time coming (as always with NTL... "Why wait" I believe they used to say  ). There are hundreds of other reasons to ditch NTL, in my experience anyway. I once was in ntl-hell (http://www.nthellworld.com) but was driven away for many many reasons that I won't go into here. To say the least, the rather funny 'hate' email from a particular customer to NTL that's been doing the rounds recently is very accurate (and close to my own experience, just that I'd never write such an abusive letter, though I'd like to ;) ).

Actually you wont if you are in an original ntl area - technical issues have delayed the launch of the new channels.
