I'll start with HEEEEEELLLLLLPPPP!,
I have installed Windows XP service Pack 2 and now my computer hangs when booting into windows... I can get into safe mode an have done a disc cleanup/defrag but when I try to log into windows in normal mode it just hangs... I have unplugged any USB connections and uninstalled the anti-virus (incase that was it) but can anyone help any more?
Please?
uninstall service pack 2?
Hate to say it but SP2 is simply an unfinished product currently - never install it unless you can either format easily in case of disasters like this
Is your copy of XP original or a 'backup'?.

My copy of XP home edition is legit... I don't wanna un-install xpSP 2 yet as I'm sure some clever so and so here can get it to boot up into windows.
This is so annoying I should have known that its a Beta and seeing half of their MS's full releases don't work what was I thinking?!
maybe check whats on startup in msconfig from safe mode?

It shouldn't matter. Microsoft have announced that SP2 will be fully compatible with all versions of XP, including dodgy bloke-down-the-market versions etc. (http://computertimes.asia1.com.sg/news/story/0,5104,2292,00.html)
I must admit thats a commendable move by microsoft. not only does it save the crackers 45 seconds cracking the protection on SP2, but it shows microsoft are more concerned about security than profit (in this instance) :suspect:

Service Pack 2 hasnt been released yet. Scarrab is using a preview version = no support.
This happened to me when I installed Service Pack 1 (the final copy on a legit copy of Win XP) I had to do a full format, not happy as the PC was about a month old at the time.

I'm at work now so I can't try it but could it possibly be the firewall that is causing the problem? It apparently starts when logging into windows (that is the windows firewall) as for the msconfig thing i've heard it before but never used it... is it a command line or do I enter it into the run box? and what do I do when I see whats in the start up? detete the things?

They've sent out another press release today saying that the bloke was wrong, SP2 will NOT install on pegleg copies.
Looks like another 45 seconds of work ahead for someone.

type msconfig into the run box. go to the startup tab and just uncheck everything since nothing critical should be there (although firewalls and AV may be turned off by that)
then reboot and see what happens. :)

If you're not very sure about what you're doing why exactly did you install a beta version of an OS SP? Might you not have been better waiting for the offical release?
Anyhoo, the most obvious question is can you boot in in safe mode?
If so, you can disable the windows firewall once you're in there.

Exactly. I've warned against this before, but people seem to think because it's available it's a released product. This is a development version and although is perhaps more than just a beta, it's subject to no warranty or support and Microsoft are free to change the contents at any time and not support upgrading to the official released SP2 also.
Unless you have a need to 'test' SP2 on a test system, you don't and shouldn't install the pre-release version if you have anything of value on the system and no backup. I certainly wouldn't expect everything to work, to have an uninstall path or even expect to be able to install the full version.
All security patches are available outside SP2 (if you look closely you'll see many are labelled already as SP1 and SP2 HotFixes, the latter actually being fixes for post SP2 release!. They'll all install without SP2 though).

I understood that SP2 only blacklists 'known' keys so anyone who has installed the corporate version using a key generator would be ok

I've been back home in my luch break after someone mentioned that its probably the video driver (AH HAAAAA) now I tried to boot up into safe mode with networking and hey presto it worked.... now all I need is an M10 driver that is compatible with XP sp2... anyone know where I can download the latest M10 drivers?
PS I've tried the ATI website and my laptop website but no joy!
well, seen asthough sp2 is still in beta, there are probably no drivers released yet.
try uninstalling the driver and re-installing it again, I know some service packs in the past I've done that to fix driver problems (the service pack replaced something that the driver didn't like, reinstalling the driver fixes the file).

All,
Thanks for all of your help, I tried to re-install video dirvers but no joy... I have now un-installed the service pack and all is back to normal (or at least I think) on my lappy.... I will wait a while before I venture on installing non-officially released MS products again.
But thanks again for all of your help DVD gang!

Not quite true, the latest beta will block most keys generated with the original keygen - but there is a keygen that will generate working keys if you set it correctly (so I've been told :suspect: )

You can of course buy a genuine copy and type the key in without having to re-install ;)

Is there any way to get rid of the text that it puts on the bottom right of the screen with the build number ?
I remember that there was a program that did if for the betas of SP1

you don't need to re-install to change the key. its actually quite a quick and simple process, doesnt require a reboot or anything.

A friend of mine tells me otherwise, although he has now uninstalled SP2 anyway.

I know. What I mean is if you find MS have screwed you and the new keys don't work, don't despair as you can still go "legit" and enter a legal key (buy buying one of course), without re-installing.
Just in case anyone thinks that to go "legit" they have to buy a new copy and install it from scratch.
;)

Being pre-release they may not have implemented any new key protection features yet.

hmm, a friend tried to install the latest beta on an XP pro installation using a generated key and it wouldnt let him use it (even though the key was a unique one he had created). After following some instructions with a different generator that creates a key using a PID containing 640 it installed fine :searchme: (the earlier beta installed ok, as deadkenny says, I dont think that version included the new measures. My friend can emphatically say the latest beta does include the new measures)
