Ok, when I take delivery of my Denon 3802 amp, I want to use some older speakers temporarily until I get new ones. With 105W per channel, can use them without of blowing something:

Rears: 50W, 8ohms.
Fronts: 80W, 6ohms.
(no center yet).

I don't pretend to understand it

PS. Anyone recommend speaker cable? QED Silvers?

Thanks in advance
:p

Yes,shouldn't be a problem. You are actually more likely to blow speakers with an underpowered amp.
Don't worry too much about the speaker power ratings as long as you don't wack it up REALLY loud.

Cheers, I thought that might be the case

As a general rule with speakers you keep turning the volume up as much as you want until the hear the sound distorting. As soon as you hear any distortion turn the volume down a bit otherwise you may blow them.

Well, I ran a 60+60 W RMS Ferrograph into a crappy set of Eagles (10W IIRC) for years without any trouble. I don't doubt I could have broken them if I'd tried, but I didn't (try that is).

How does that come about then?

If I remember correctly its because if you turn the amp up sooo much that the signal clips, you then drive the speakers with a DC signal which can damage the drive coils

I seem to remember that one of my friends that worked for B+W said that the DC signal causes a heating in the coils - or something like that.

yea, A low poewred amp will start to clip the waveform ( producing distortion) which basicaly just drives the speakers to thier extreems causing overheating etc.

wonder what happens when I listen to slayer....

Hopefully, your amp would implode.
