View Full Version : The OFFICIAL Eurovision 2004 thread
Seeing as there's now less than a week before the highlight of the year hits our screens I think I'd better get this started :)
As Turkey's State Minister for Broadcasting says: "This event (Eurovision Song Contest) is even more important then any other political summit or event due to take place in Turkey in the next month, such as the NATO summit in June", a sentiment I'm sure we all agree with ;)
The festivities get off to a start with the semi final (stupid idea, I'm firmly in agreement with Sir Tel on this) on
Wednesday 12th May 20.00 - BBC3 - Semi Final
then
Thursday 13th May 20.30 - BBC3 - Eurovision On Location (also on 00.30 and 03.00 - don't know if these are repeats of the earlier show or not)
Friday 14th May 20.00 - BBC3 - Eurovision On Location (also on 00.30 and 03.40 - don't know if these are repeats of the earlier show or not)
Saturday 15th May 17.25 - BBC1 - Weakest Link: Eurovision Special
and, of course
Saturday 15th May 20.00 - BBC1 - Eurovision Song Contest

and later on that evening...
Eurovision... A Little Bit More - BBC3 - 23.10/01.50
The German build up has already started with Wunder Gibt Ist Immer Wieder last night on ARD (guess which idiot totally forgot about it  :brickwall any Germans reading this who happened to record it, etc etc :suspect: ) and on NDR tonight we've just had a look at the previews, complete with comments from the likes of Joy Fleming, Gitte, one half of Baccara, Silver Convention and many more, currently on is the 1980 final Ein Lied Fur Den Haag (I won't spoilt it for you but I reckon Katja Ebstein has a good chance ;) ) and later tonight the 1957 final.
No doubt, like last year, commentary will be provided both on here and on IRC (details to be sorted soon) :)
I'll be home for the first time in years but I won't watch the singing bit :gag:
Greece are favourites, do you think they stand a chance agnetha?

Rule of thumb is never to take any notice of what the fans say. The fans predicted great things for Cyprus in 1999 and they ended up with 2 points!
As for Greece being favourites, it depends where you heard that. Sakis is a *huge* star in Greece and the Greek seem to think everyone else has heard of him and love him as much as them, hence the Greek bigging up Sakis a lot.
The same has happened with Max (German entrant). He was Stefan Raab's wild card entry and the Germans seem to think he's the best thing since sauerkraut. The song has been a massive hit in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Admittedly he has a very good voice if you like that sort of thing (think a blacker Joe Cocker/Andrew Strong I suppose) but apart from the <del>dreadful screeching</del> heartfelt, soulful 'whoarrrgh' towards the end the song is distinctly average. One of those that will either do really well (top 5) or not much - similar to our entry on that score.
Judging by various messageboards and ignoring regional basis, the favourites seem to be Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Ukraine and maybe Russia. But then again, there are plenty of people who would put those as their least favourites. Time to make up your mind on Saturday I suppose!

The Ukraine song was the only one to get unanimous thumbs up all round by the various celebs and old contestants on the German preview programme so you never know. I don't think it'll win - my money's on Sweden - £10 each way at 10/1 (which are incredible odds imho) stand to net me £145 - but has a good chance of doing very well.
Big bump as the semi final is on tonight

I think the safe bet has to go on 1 of the 10 new EU member states as the votes are dictated more by European politics than anything to do with the songs.
Germany's entry is rather spiffing though.
Bit off a crapper I don't get beeb3.
Mama mia, here we go again...

:oh-hum:
The singing's always worth watching - remember Jemini last year? ( ) Not to mention XXL in 2000, Sophie Carle in 84, Geraldine in 67...
And clothes - Lydia's horrendous deckchair in 1999 and the fashion disaster that was Barbara Dex in 93 are just two that spring to mind....
So yes, the singing bit is worth watching too. Out of 20-odd songs there's bound to be one or two at least that are actually quite good.
Gone for Sweden and Belgium so far, Serbia seems to be getting positive reactions on various polls.

Indeed.
I have to say I'm beginning to get a feeling about Cyprus...
*goes to look at odds*
It's probably the most open contest in years with no real outright definite winners - there's a good handful that could do it.
CJ, I only watch the voting.
This semi-final thing is new. I'd imagined it'd just be the weeker countries but it seems we're in it. Is there a chance we won't be on saturdays show?

We're one of three or four countries that bankroll it every year and thus we are immune from not taking part.
Germany is another.
Agnetha will be along shortly to expand/correct my explanation I'm sure. :)

I site as an example Cyprus 1999. Hot favourite to win by the fans. It ended up limping home with just two points...
And never take any notice of what the national countries say either. Greece and Germany are going to be beside themselves if Sakis and Max don't do really really well on Saturday. And of course the most famous example of this is Germany 1975 (Ein Lied Kann Eine Brucke Sein - Joy Fleming) - one of those classic 'too good for Eurovision' songs, - they still have post mortems of why it did so badly on the night.

We're one of the 'Big Four' along with France, Germany and Spain who put the most money into the EBU coffers, and therefore immune to relegation. Probably a good job after last year too...

I just had a quick look at this on BBC3 and caught the start of the Portuguese entry.
1) No commentary! Where's Terry to make sense of the mayhem?
2) It looks like a 4:3 broadcast with a wide black border all round. Is that right or is my TV set up badly?

Ah. Misread it in all the excitement. Seeing as James Fox hasn't performed yet it's a safe bet that we're automatically in the Final ;)
The semi has come about simply because of the sheer numbers of new countries wanting to take part (oh, and probably to make money as well). I'm not sure about it myself - I think I prefer the more straightforward relegation process. It's arguable that the entrants coming from the semis have an advantage as we've already seen the performances so know what to expect, though this could work both ways - imagine the anti-climax had we already seen Bucks Fizz whipping off their skirts before the proper Saturday night Final?
Abba now (I used to have the dolls)
Nice to see Colin Grigson headbanging too - see, he was heavy metal after all
Cyprus and the Netherlands added to my bets.

I'd imagine they'd save stunts like that for the final and leave it out of the dress rehearsal (sorry semi final)
Camaj said

Probably not actually due to camera positions, etc. I remember in 1998 Guildo Horn climbed up and down the set and audience and so on in the dress rehersals, so it was hardly spontaneous. I reckon the Sakis performance will be *very* similar on Saturday.
Very brief comments:
One of the best ever stages. Very impressive.
Presenters are less impressive. Though they don't sink to the depths of Denmark's rhyming couplets, they were very unfunny and the man in particular a bit embarrassing. Israel did it better in 1999 and that's not saying much.
Switzerland - dreadful. For one second I thought it could be another Everybody (Estonia 2001 least deserved win ever :gag: ) but thankfully that moment passed.
Israel - bring back the sideways dancing and the backing dancers! David D'or can sing but the song was poor (Ehud Manor should be ashamed) and the vocals just a little too much.
Portugal - not much of a song but performance was good and polished. Surprised it didn't make it.
Malta - Eurovision has to have a bit of cheese and this year it's coming from Malta. Very good performance - had seasoned ESC fans and Malta-dislikers raving. Not sure about the opera tra la la's but otherwise super performance.
Greece - huge disappointment. Sakis is very :norty: but the song is weak and his voice even weaker. Polished dancing, shame he couldn't concentrate on singing more as he was out of breath after the first verse.
Ukraine - Xena!!! I still think this has more than a whiff of Girls Aloud about it. Not quite as good as everyone has been making out and the performance is a bit distracting (looks more like a interval act) but should do well.
Albania - shock of the night! Excellent, assured performance. Amjeza oozed charm, sang well and really brought the song out of itself. The best performance of the night was the least staged - says something? Has a look of Martina Hingis to her in these eyes too.
Cyprus - started well but very nasty bad notes towards the end. Will nerves get to her on Saturday?
Estonia - the Kelly Family :gag: sing Sanomi. A bit too experimental and, while it was a decent performance, it wasn't right on the night.
Denmark - well known Latino country  Surprised this didn't qualify to be honest. The singer looked a bit like Bobby Davro, which probably didn't help.
Serbia - powerful. Not my cup of Eurovision tea but could do well.
Netherlands - another surprise. Excellent performance, another Olsen Brothers maybe?
Paddy O'Connell proved he is most certainly not the next Terry Wogan. It was a relief when we lost contact with him for a while.
So - ones to watch on Saturday.... Malta and Albania - both dark horses I reckon. I'll still be voting for my beloved Sweden though :) http://members.lycos.co.uk/agnetha666/swedenflag.gif
so... I spotted 3 of ABBA in that short film... where was the dark head one (scuse my lack of name knowledge). Also was the blond one really in it? I thought she was a recluse now? They prob used a bit of CGI
So Paddy O'Connell was his name - well Wogan is much better.. O'Connell was like a more masculine graham norton..
and agnetha... whens Abba - The Movie coming out on DVD? thats fantastic.. great live performances..
Does anybody know of a pub in London Town that will be showing the Song Contest?

He did come out with one cracking comment.
I think it was Lithuania and the lad singing had apparently cut his singing teeth as part of a boy band. He sang his song with a few girlies gyrating around him.
The song finishes, cue Paddy:
"Well he's swapped the boys for girls - at least for his performance anyway." :D
Plus he did have the grace to apologise for not being Wogan and assured us that Tel would occupy the seat on Saturday.

Caught the first half of this last night but had to tune out - I couldn't sit through more "songs" that went along the lines of "clap your hands, clap your hands", "shake it, shake it, shake it", "na na na na na na..." etc. :|
Watched the Horizon "there's gonna be an ice age in 20 years" programme instead, much less depressing ;)
Ought - 1 or 2 gay venues will probably be showing it, probably King's Arms in Poland St, & Retro Bar off the Strand.

Frida isn't dark haried anymore She was the very blonde one in front when Agnetha walked behind.
As much as I love Eurovision - last night the best song was in the interval and over 26 years old ;)
Abba The Movie DVD - tentatively scheduled for 2005. The Swedish Film Institute have finished the restoration of it and other people are currently working on the sound.
I'm really confused now. I thought we were in the semi-final last night but it seems we weren't. Who didn't make it to the final then?
I only heard about the abba thing after it was shown and then forgot about the repeat. Sounded Interesting

Calling it a semifinal has caused mucho confusion.
Basically, as Agnetha said, the big four - UK, France, Germany & Spain - were guaranteed a place in Saturday's competition. Then the 10(?) countries who got the most points last year were guaranteed, leaving 10 places for all the countries you saw last night to fight over.
Ought - get along to the Retro Bar, it's more mixed really, or "alternative", if you will, & I'll bet they'll be making quite a party out of the event. You won't be raped & you might even enjoy yourself!

I can't help thinking the "semi-final" is a bad idea. The more bizarre stuff (which is what I usually tune in for) is now more likely to get weeded out at this stage, meaning we'll get more sub-Whigfield pop pap, more over-wrought ballads, and less ditties about small hares having small noses when we get to the main event. OK, so I can watch the weird stuff on BBC3, but that means I have to watch it in a little box in the middle of my screen, with no subtitles for the lyrics, and with the barbed comments of Ken Bruce replaced with the semi-coherent ramblings of a toss-pot.
I suppose it's just the latest in a line of poor ideas really though. Surely I'm not the only person who longs for the days of live orchestras and native languages am I?
Anyway, of the ones who got through last night, Ukraine are the country to beat as far as I'm concerned. Who cares if the song was cack? The whole Manowar meats Xena Warrior Princess look was pretty special.

I agree wholeheartedly. The great thing about Eurovsion has always been the different mix of music, and anything even slightly different and unpalatable to 'normal' tastes is often, if not exactly the best song, the most talked about. Alla Pugacheva, Baby Doll, Fredi & Friends - names that conjure up many emotions for fans, wouldn't have stood a chance in a semi. Mind you, had we had a semi earlier then perhaps we would have been spared Everybody...
Surely I'm not the only person who longs for the days of live orchestras and native languages am I?
You're most certainly not! Though orchestras in the past have occasionally made a pig's ear of a song, it added a certain warmth and charm.
As for the language rule, that's slightly more controversial. There are definitely some countries who have missed out in the past because the language isn't 'nice' sounding (Dutch and Finnish for two). However, badly pronounced English is a hindrance too (anyone know what language Belarus were singing in? ) and I'd rather hear natural language in a song than strangulated English. Romania seem to have been the worst offenders in recent years... I always felt the different languages gave Eurovision its charm. Now the heart of Eurovision is being ripped out more and more :(
Anyway, of the ones who got through last night, Ukraine are the country to beat as far as I'm concerned.
You know, I'm sensing another Slovenia 2001 - fantastic performances in the semi/rehearsals, everyone raving about it, but on the night just...lacking...something.
Lou - the voting will probably start around 10pm-ish - usually takes an hour, though might take even longer this year.
:(

...and, in what would later be called 'the Delia Smith effect', sales of velcro shot up the Monday afterwards. Absolutely true by the way.
The skirt ripping off probably did win it for Bucks Fizz (but who's complaining as it's the UK  ) I seem to recall Germany were the favourites in 1981 and Making Your Mind Up was considered fun but a bit throwaway. In retrospect, Johnny Blue (the German song, sung by Lena Valaitis, then wife of German ubermeister Ralph Siegel I believe) is probably a more quality song but it came second and the rest is (very proud UK) history.
