View Full Version : Swordfish R1 DVD
Top quality action movie presented on a good but not amazing disc.
First off, the movie is just superb for action junkies like me. John Travolta is just so good in it, maybe not as good as his Sean Archer/Castor Troy role in Face/Off but still excellent. Hugh Jackman is surely one to watch in the future as he puts in another good perfomance here to compliment his role as Wolverine in the X-Men movie and Halle Berry looks great in it!
The picture on the disc is just superb except for one shot with Hugh Jackman on the beach after his encounter with Don Cheadle who plays a Federal Agent. There is quite a bit of noticeable grain on the picture which is very surprising considering it was out in the cinemas only two or three months ago.
Sound is presented in a DD5.1 mix and sounds excellent, espically the explosion near the beginning of the movie. Definately one to show off to your mates.
Extras are maybe a little lacking. We have two alternate endings on show, commentary from the director Dominic Sena, 2 Behind the Scenes docs which are lightweight, the trailer and bios. Not be sniffed at but still - maybe more could have been done?
Overall - certainly one to own espically considering its cheap price at a number of R1 retailers.

Yes Halle has a very nice chest, the director was right that it was just "her time" to "reveal" them. The film was amazing, I've went to see it twice at the cinema and so glad it is being released so soon after the WTC/Pentagon "incident" :D while my memory is still fresh of that and adds excitement to Swordfish.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and been recommending it to everyone. What a MASTERPIECE! :o

I thought it was excellent as well & I'd reconmend the DVD to anyone.
I can't quite understand Andy Halls rather average review over at DVDtimes & I'd urge action fans to ignore such reviews.

As whats been put in the comment option, if you compare it to recent hollywood blockbuster movies such as Tomb Raider & TPM you can see just how good it is.

More thumbs up here.
Already lent it twice to friends, top stuff :)
After watching Swordfish today for the first time I'd pretty much agree with Andys review. The film was quite good, certainly fun in places, the opening scenes (Travoltas monologue and that explosion!) were superb, but then it just got average.
What was all that crap coming out of the finnish guys mouth regarding Travolta???!! Totally pointless IMO. just a nice bit of dialogue for the trailer more than anything else. Also, the hacking stuff also really got on my nerves as did the whole premise for Jackmans character getting involved and staying involved.
also, Vinnie Jones - ban this guy from american movies!
and sadly apart from the opening explosion and the car chase sequence the action was pretty lifeless IMO.
still, good popcorn movie that for a nice change kept well under the 2hr mark, plus of course, Halle Berry's assets :D
great DD5.1 soundtrack on the disc though - thoroughly rocked my room :)

Damn you DVDtimesters !,
I knew you'd stick together like glue. :D
Admit kanedaa you thought it was better than a 6 !.;)
...and personally, I liked Viney Jones in the movie.
At least he dosnt have to result to pathetic English stereotyping to get parts as an Englishman in America, unlike Hurley & that tosspot Grant.
I'd rather have a dozen Viney Jones in Hollywood than 1 knob'ed like Hugh Grant.

well, to be honest I really dislike 'out of 10' marks for films (for the DVD side of things its fine though) as, well, its just plain annoying and I find it very difficult to score a film. You see, IMO, if a film gets 3/5 that means its an average film that will please fans of the genre, pretty much what Swordfish is and it would probably deserve 3/5. But, to me, 5 or 6/10 is the equivalent to 3/5 - meaning its merely an average movie which has its faults etc but will appeal to fans of the genre.
so, for me 6/10 is fine even though it seems a lot harsher than 3/5....if you follow me :D

thats a good point actually :)
dave.
I enjoyed this. One of the best action flicks I've seen for quite sometime.
Agree with the positive comments about Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry makes for some stunning 'eye candy'.
The sound as mentioned on this disc is superb. Far better than Tomb Raider which I also watched this week.
I'd give it 8/10. Halle Berry? I'd give her one! :D  ;)

I actually think it's a very good action film, and my original cinema review gave it 8/10, which I think's a far fairer score.
I managed to watch this yesterday and thought it was brilliant. So good i think it can go in my top 5 of best films. It was so good i watched the commentary today, the fastest i've ever rewatched a film to listen to the comm.
Everything about this film oodles class. The three main leads are fantastic. I think Hugh Jackman is up there with the Brad Pitt's and George Clooney's. He's got real charisma. As for Berry, i thought it was the best film i've seen her in for some time. As Sena say's in the comm you believe she is a cosmopolitan girl, a computer savvy sex pot Travolta was on autopilot i think but that's a good thing. Of the actors in it i think Vinnie was the only let down. I'm sorry but it just looks like he tries TOO hard at acting.:(
Anyway the film was everything i thought it would be and more, especially the cinamatography. the colours in the films were unbelievable. Blues and Greens and Reds everywhere. Even Stanley and Ginger in a TOILET looked fantastic. Kudos to the DP Paul Cameron it really is a great film to look at. I liked the explosion although i was a little dissapointed. It was made out to be a big thing, which it probably was on a cinema screen but for me the effect was diminished somewhat on my 21" TV. Obviously that's not a fault with the film.
Swordfish is up there now with Fight Club, Out of Sight, Beverlly Hills Cop and Gridlock'd as my favourite films.
Thoroughly recommended to all action/Travolta/classy films:D

I liked it but not a lot.
I just think that fancy camera work (like the opening scene) has become the new CGI. Can't think of a good story...never mind just film it with lots of different film stock, throw in some bullet time camera work and nobody will notice. Hey it worked with Traffic. Turn your run of the mill , by the numbers drug traffiking movie into an oscar winner.
Still I'll probably buy Swordfish eventually...it is cheap.

The Great El Dino ???.
I enjoyed it a lot, but am I the only person that thinks some of the SFX sequences were a bit weak? (The start and all the bus related activity was good however).
For example the SFX when Vinnie Jones 'explodes' along with a hostage and when Jackman blows up the chopper looked rather poor.
