I managed to pick one of these up dirt cheap at the weekend, I have heard that they can be flashed to become +/-, does anybody know where to get the firmware, and whch version id the best?

Also, I haven't had chance to pick up any blank discs yet, any reccomendations?

You can do it.
You'll need to flash it in DOS with a 1300 firmware.
Pickup TDB DOS flash utility here: http://tdb.rpc1.org
and get a 1300 fw from either http://forum.rpc1.org/index.php or www.herrie.org

Be aware that -r disks written with this hacked firmware are not very reliable. There is a wealth of info on the rpc1 forum regarding this.
