View Full Version : help with an AMP
Hi guys. Her we go
I currrently have a Sony Mini Hifi (RX90) which came with two Sony Large speakers that sound very good and two suround speakers which are not very good.
I swapped the suround speakers when I bought it for some 100w Wharfedale speakers and music sounds TIP TOP from the stereo.
My DVD player has built in 5.1 and DTS. If I buy an amp for this (say a Sony Prologic AV reciever). Can I connect these speakers to it and then buy a FRONT speaker for the voice.
If I did not put a Sub on this would it sound good still (eg explosions) or do you need specific speakers for this Job. All four are 100w speakers.
Thanks for INPUT guys in advance
Also::: are there specific settings on amps to set it to having NO SUB and so it sends (explosions to the fours speakers)

Seeing how cheap DD/DTS receivers are now - sub £200, there's no point whatsoever in buying a basic Pro-Logic one.

Yep. And there's no need to rush out and buy a centre if you're strapped because you can set the amp to CENTRE - NO and it'll route all the centre info to the mains.
If I did not put a Sub on this would it sound good still (eg explosions) or do you need specific speakers for this Job. All four are 100w speakers.
Depends on how low frequency wise your (main) speakers go. 100w means nothing.

Yes. Set the amp to SUB - NO and the main speakers to LARGE.
Great info:D :D :D :D
How do I find out if the speakers are suitable for watching movies??

Connect your DVD player to your current stereo via the analogue jacks and see what it sounds like. It'll only be stereo, but you'll get some idea of what your main speakers will be like, the surrounds you can almost get away with any old crap. :p
I currently have the Stereo linked from the analogue jacks and the sound is basey but the vioces are hard to hear so I have to put the volume up on the telly to hear them. Then its OK.
There are a few settings on HI FI that make it a bit better though
Music: sounds very good from Films
Base: Pretty good, sometimes too much so I have to turn some base down on HI FI.
Vioces: Can hear them but they are not too loud so I turn telly up.
Overall: I prefer it on than off. Gives it a better sound.
Thanks for helping me
So...
To sum up
I f I get a AV Receiver and then in Future buy a Front speaker I should be Ok with the speakers that I have if they sound ok now.
Thanks Bapapapa

Eh?
Mate, it's daft having the sound come through the TV & the stereo at the same time. It must sound a tad muddled.
Turn the TV volume right down, if you're gonna use the stereo.

TBH, youll probably want to upgrade the speakers as well, but if they sound OK now, then you can upgrade when you have more moola.
Would I notice a difference if I did get an AMP and connected these speakers do you think.
Would it still give you some sort of suround if there was only the 4 speakers with the FRONT speaker dissabled and routed through to the Four suround speakers.
I Know you cant answer these question exact COS u aint seen what I have. Just want your opinion
Thanks:D

Yep, receiver & 4x speakers will give surround, with a 'phantom' centre.
Remember you'll be able to use your DVD/receiver combo to play CDs, too.
:( :( :( :( :(
Now your just upsetting me. My player will not play CD-R disc.
what I am thinking is... If I get four more lengths of Speaker Wire and connect the AMP/RECIEVER to the 4 Speakers. Leave the HI-FI where it is with the wiring also going to the speakers and just use one ay a time.
Will this be OK

No, don't do that mate, unless you use a switching box. Two lots of power going to one set of speakers = potential trouble.
BTW, who said anything about CDRs? You should buy your CDs like everyone else.

So even though I would only have 1 thing on at a time this is still trouble? I didn't there were any Speaker wire Switch Box's available to buy.

As long as you only ever use one at a time, there should be no problem, but accidents do happen. :/
