Actually a lot of people (myself included) take the mickey out of the show's Max Power/Boys Toys stance but does anyone remember the show in the 80's???
Whe're's a snoring smilie when you need one!
ahhh that'll make sense then. i like TG and im not that into cars, and im certainly not a boyricer type. i just think clarksons funny, i must be one of a very small minority mind :)

Indeed. My sister watches the show and she isn't in the slightest bit interested in cars - she just finds Clarkson hysterical, as do i!
Good news its coming back

Whe're's a snoring smilie when you need one! Maybe not 80s, but probably 90s before Jeremy Clarkson's ascent to power - The tail end of Tony Mason, Willy Woollard, Angela Rippon, Chris Goffey, possibly some old bearded bloke who was also on Tomorrow's World, Michelle Newman and others.
No pointless sideways action, childish remarks and overuse of filters to make the sky look purlpe, just decent and informative reviews of cars.
Not nearly as entertaining as it is these days, but to me more interesting.
Clarkson is top, very entertaining show. He's a totally different bloke in real life though, top bloke

The original (ish) format Top Gear is now on five, and it's called fifth gear (http://www.five.tv/programmes/fifthgear/). It's got Tiff Needell in one of the original 1980's Top Gear team!

Agreed, TG isn't really a car show now, it's an entertainment show with cars in it.
The only problem with 5th gear is Vicky "Vroom vroom out the side of my mouth" Butler-Henderson.

The Exige is just  , it's the sort of raw, hardcore car I just love...but it's got a Toyota engine. :gag: :gag:

What's your problem with that - seems like it uses a similar technique to Vtec....
And I've said it before, if you really want raw and hardcore, get a bike.

Similar but not the same. Honda's VTEC system was the original variable valve timing system....it's been copied many times....Toyota's VVTi & BMW's Vanos systems....but for sheer simplicity and therefore reliablity...nothing else comes close.
And I've said it before, if you really want raw and hardcore, get a bike.
No thanks mate...I'd fall off and kill myself.

Toyota's VVTi is continuously variable so it's not as raw when the 'hot' cam kicks in on Honda's original VTEC system. i-VTEC is similar to VVTi (both intelligent) :dork:

I think I speak for the majority of the forums when I say that we are all rather jealous!
I thought that the DB9 piece was excellent. An excellent idea, really well thought out and well put together. The Exige piece was rather 'over the top' but enjoyable. Who else doesn't believe that the dealer was in the back of the CityRover though?

I live near the Aston Martin factory in Newport Pagnell and often see them testing the nearly finished one's on the way to work. They have different coloured panels as they are not painted yet, but still look awsome!

I reckoned the feature on the Exige was a bit a waste of time, did anyone really care if the copter got the thing tracked or not.
The race through France was great though, you tell Jeremy really enjoyed the run and how much James May hates public transport!

yep, plus there are probably a whole load of other cars that can "out do" the copter's radar in the confines of the track/field.

I look forward to their Zt260 review :)
My wife watched this with me for the first time ever and I think she hit the nail on the head when she said it should be on for half an hour.
That pretty much sums it up for me, there is so much filler and inane drivel that it's fairly obvious they're just filling time.
As kcxdev says - within the confines of a track pretty much most cars would avoid the radar of a helicopter, it was pointless and rpoved nothing at all.
The DB9 vs the train - interesting concept that ultimately proved nothing. It didn't give a comparison between the use of public transport and the car as Clarkson said, because the constraints on May and Hammond were totally unrealistic.
The DB9 was a beautiful car and looks like a great ownership proposition.
As for the fuel cap release thing, can I take I'm the only one who still doesn't know where it is or why it was so difficult to find? A picture of the button is fairly useless in close up :cuckoo:
Also, there were a bit too many shots of the DB9 in the distance with half the screen taken up in the foreground by a traffic sign. Very arty...
I think I may stop watching this, as it isn't adding anything to my knowledge of cars to speak of!

I think it is great entertainment, but I take your point it's not a good car review program. I mean how many people can really afford an Exige or DB9 anyway ?
You've got to look at 5th gear really for everyday car comparisons.
The DB9/train race was excellent entertainment. They make a great trio.

Fantastic entertainment program. Just like 'They Think It's All Over' isn't so much about sport as the entertainment, so it is with Top Gear. A really nice mix of presenters too, they bounce of each other well.
Looking forward to the rest of this series :)

Back from Gaydon ( AM factory) now.
All I can say is WOW!
Superb modern complex, with excellent hospitality.
The car park alone was almost worthe the trip, with around half a dozen DB9s' a DB7 Zagato assorted other "heavy metal" and the not yet released V8 Vantage. If you like the '9 wait 'till you see this. Only £70,000! Due Nov 2005. One of our party is already putting his name down for one. Hmmmm......
Inside, the reception area has a DB9 to play with, another in cut-away and the original Vantage show mock up. Absoloutely stunning car in the metal as is the interior.
On the tour we got to see around the production line which is incredibly clean and surprisingly quiet due to the hand built nature of the car. They currently only have one robot on the line.
Best of all though we saw our car in final assembly  Should be with us in the next ten days or so.

You seem very po-faced about it - Sunday's Top Gear was excellent and I had a smile on my face throughout the programme. The programme isn't about adding to your knowledge of cars, it's about taking you to a fantastical place mostly based on aspiration. You'll notice that the non-aspirational pieces (eg the Fiesta ST and the City Rover) were both essentially played for laughs.
I had to chuckle about your description of the DB9-Train race. It was not supposed to be practical, it wasn't supposed to be a public transport vs car race. The race was all about the power and the mystique of driving one of the world's most beautiful cars, of contrasting real life with the dream. It wasn't supposed to prove anything other than the fact that driving an Aston is impossibly wonderful. I'll bet that Clarkson didn't even win the race. It doesn't matter.
As for the Exige/gunship thing - you're probably right in that other cars can do it too, but "most" of them? I doubt it. The whole exercise was all about using exaggeration to make a point, then hammer it home with an amazing lap by the Stig. Job done.
If you're after "worthy" roadtests, watch Fifth Gear, or better yet, get a subscription to CAR magazine. Top Gear tried the worthy route with Fatboy and his "Insider Dealing" in the first series and it was dull, dull, dull.

I'm usually as polite as possible in these forums but right now I'm really kind of hating you....
;)
Seriosuly, hope you enjoy the car. I can safely say that if I had 100k+ lying around spare, a DB9 is the ONLY car I would be prepared to spend that kind of money on. It's one of the most beautiful creations ever :notworthy
I take Top Gear as pure entertainment, nothing more nothing less. Loved the new show and think its format works very well. I started watching 2 seasons ago and was hooked.
I always wanted an exhige but want one more now and i could afford one if i sold everything lol.
It was funny though when Clarkson said he looked calm and relaxed when he arrived and the 2 other blokes who used public transport looked worn out, knackered and stressed.

Fair enough, it's not really worthy-ness I'm after but a bit more cars and a lot less Clarkson's irrational judgement.
I guess in a way I am a bit po faced about it, after all I have to sit and watch them have a right laugh in a job we'd dream of doing and at the end of it all we know is that they're having a laugh, they singularly fail to offer any meaningful substance to their reporting.
I know facts can be a bit dull, but they're also fairly important... as you say TG isn't the place to go for those these days..
Ok little heads up for tomorrow night, was in the sun today that Paul McKena hypnotise one of the Top Gear Presenters (Not sure which one, It's not JC).
And then he does'nt know how to drive the car, and thinks the cigarette lighter is a starting button for the car.

I think it's D.Hill
There have been two stigs, the first was Perry McCarthy, but I think they got rid of him when his identity got out (or that's just the rumour anyway).
I doubt the new Stig is anyone as famous as D.Hill, although I can't think of anything that Hill is likely to be doing with his time at the moment, perhaps touring with his band?

i thought this weeks show was very poor tbh. No interest in the pink thunderbirds car so skipped over that, thought the monster truck thing was just daft (very "driven") so i ffw'd through that, then the hypnosis thing was a pile of BS so I didn't really care for that. the only interesting part was the Merc/Mclaren, and the whole hour-long show was about 15minutes for me!

I very much enjoyed this weeks episode, would love to go down that beach and give the 911 a good thrashing.:D
Doesn't that beach have a 15 mile an hour limit (or similar). We went to drive on it when we were on holiday and the tide was in
I thought it was a great episode, car struck by lightening  That first burst we thought "Is that it?"

Does Anyone know if it is repeated? Sky Plus has managed to completely "forget" to record it.. where's the hammer!
I really wanted to know what they said about the New Astra.
Can Anyone Help either way?
They said it was 'not bad' - ie: nothing earth shattering but not a bad attempt. They tested two other similar cars - the Mazda 3 and the Golf.
Then concluded that if they wanted summat like those, they'd buy a Ford Focus! :D

Pretty poor show last night I thought. The lightning thing has been done before at the same facility, either by Fifth Gear or Driven a couple of years ago, but they made out it was their own idea last night. Johnny & Denise were awful as well and I certainly won't be tuning into their show :oh-hum: Johnny needed a good slap and reminding he was the guest and not the presenter.

I've logged a call with Sky. They say they have no record of any similar complaints so I've pointed them in the direction of digital spy.

I really wanted to know what they said about the New Astra.
Can Anyone Help either way?
They've started repeating the new series on UKPeople (566). The one where Jeremy 'raced' a train in a DB9 was on on Sunday 7pm/

Would have been mildly amusing if his show was being moved because of the football, but it isn't.
And on the 20th the show is replaced by an Anne Bronte adaptation.
Johnny and Denise - there's a show to avoid.
ITV get rid of a dating show because it had run it's course. They replace it with...a variation on a dating show which gets a pathetic audience. Then the BBC nick the idea and tweak it.

Right pain as I missed about 20 mins of it because of that.

A good show, but Clarkson must get rid of the MG Rover complex!!! I'm a big fan of the MG Zeds, terrific handling and fun cars, especially the ZS.
The ZT is a cruiser, doesn't compete with super cars :oh-hum:
James May should've tested the car on the road, probably given a more balanced view.
Many Thanks to All.
I've bought a New Astra and am waiting for it to arrive you see.

The choir bit in the music was taken from John Williams Duel of The Fates (from The Phantom Menace OST) but for some reason it was cut with something I've never heard before.....

Why does Clarkson hate yank motors? Yes they can be a bit bad on build quality but they are strong motors and when you can get a Corvette for £25k that will whip most cars this side of £100k then why not?
Even a 10 year old Camaro Z28 will wipe the floor with most modern Jap hot hatches.
Oh and Clarkson has a Ford GT on order...yes an American Car
I have a 13 Year old yank that is still going strong and has more character than the Euroboxes you see every day.

Hehe, I was thinking about his Ford GT40 on order when he said they were crap.
I wouldn't mind a 4.6 litre Ford Mustang MY05 either, despite what he said about the suspension.
It looks gorgeous, a proper American muscle car.

I was thinking that myself, yet it seemed to get glossed over and never even mentioned by the other presenters, no doubt Clarkson told em not to say anything about that.

I'm fairly sure that Clarkson wasn't talking about strictly limited edition supercars with a list price of over £100,000 just as he wouldn't have said it about the original GT40.
locutus_uk
15-06-2004, 05:44
The New Mustang is gorgeous and the main reason it has a live rear axle is because the yanks like to drag strip their cars and that type of axle is more suited to it.
You could basically import the V6 version (Good for 200bhp) for less than the price of a Mondeo.
I know which one I would rather have.
Funny how they hated the yank motors and then clarkson raves on about a renault clio which had even worse build quality.

In a straight line the US cars that you talk about are reasonably fast, but show them a corner and then what do you get? I think that this is JC's general dislike of US cars.

The original GT40 which the new ford is based was designed and built here in england so it is not technically an american car javascript:smilie(':dork:')
OK ive had enough.
Can somebody explain to me in simpleton terms what understeer and oversteer is please. They always mention it on test drives and ive no idea whet they mean, what it is, what it does etc.
They explained this a while ago on top gear, I think it went something like this:
Understeer - You turn into a corner, the car doesn't turn quick enough, you crash into a tree and die. (the rear end has more grip than the fronts and 'pushes' the car resulting in a less sharp turn than you intended)
Oversteer - You turn into a corner, the car turns too quickly, you crash into a tree and die. (the rear end slips out and you end up with the front pointing at a sharper angle than you intended)
I'll try...
Oversteer is when you turn into a corner and the back end of the car slides out of the corner - i.e. the angle of the car is turned into the corner too much - hence the "over".
Understeer is the opposite, you turn the car into the corner and it resists, leaving the car sliding out of the corner, and it angled too shallowly for the corner - hence the "under".
There's a whole load of nuances as to what causes this, down to grip, what wheels are being driven, brake balancing and the disitribution of weight in the car, but I'll leave that to somebody else...

Understeer = Passenger terified
Oversteer = Driver terrified

No - the 0-60 was never really explained - they mentioned more that on a fast start the merc was just wheen spinning. JC managed a good enough start in the race however. I thought the Spyder(sp?) had the 4.4secs.
As for the top speed, didn't it say that there was an upper limit 'Gentleman's Agreement' from the German manufacturers of 155mph?
 at the tug of war pull though.
I loved JC EDITING himself at the thought of being sued by Lionel Richie after his wheel came off

A bit annoying for James that he gets to introduce the Spyder and then Jeremy drives it.

I suspect that Merc didn't let them. Probably because they wouldn't want the adverse publicity of their £300,000 car being beaten by some cars MUCH cheaper.
Disappointed I missed this ep, sounds like it was a good 'un.

Oh right. Bloke at work said it was the new McMerc. Cretin.
Does anybody else think Mercedes are playing a dangerous game? They keep producing more and more model variations with increasing amounts of power, yet their quality reputation is suffering, their dealers are often slated for poor service, and their brand is being increasingly diffused and cheapened. All because they want the biggest numbers.
The McMerc looks like it was forged from the left-overs of an F1 car, and it's very nice indeed. Though, I want the new BMW M5, cos it looks ace and stuff.

I was disappointed they didn't do anything on the hybrid car they had on at the start of the show :( JC just poo-pooed it with the wave of a hand. Thought this was a bit off seeing that it was mentioned in 3 different synopsis I saw on the program. I'd be interested in how it performs, MPG etc. Perhaps their film on it hadn't been completed yet...
As for the GT40 - nice vehicle but totally impractical. As for JCs head poking out the top of the old version

I think the general consensus is that their worthless. Hugely priced and no more capable than a diesel supermini. Of course we're doing without the emissions and particulates but until they get to 100MPG plus then they make no economic sense. Besides, Top Gear likes the cheap joke and this was just that. The politicians must squirm when watching it!
What about that piece with the jumbo and the mondeo/citroen?! No wonder they don't let us drive through Heathrow when the planes are moving. Makes Clarkson's potato bazooka look positively wimpy.
