I thought I'd give overclocking my first go with my Barton xp2500+

I only have PC2700 DDR333 Corsair Ram but I thought it be able to handle a bit of an overclock.

The multiplier on my AMD is locked so I was uppin the FSB speeds from 166.

I managed to get up to 176 without the PC going loony, anything above that just doesnt work!!!

Isn't this a completely lame overclock or am I doing something wrong?

Try upping the latency of the RAM and try slightly increasing the
voltage driven to the CPU.

If the RAM is the limit, then upping the latency may give a little
more headroom. If it's the CPU, then a little more voltage may
help stablise it.

I achieved the same. I think it's cause my board doesn't lock the speeds of the pci and agp buses. So all the cards are getting upset.

I've had the 2500+ CPU at 3200+ (upped FSB to 200MHz), while keeping the PC2700 RAM @ 166MHz, but tbh the PC didn't feel any faster in actual use so I put it back (left it a week)

I unlocked my barton 2500+ and it now shows(and runs) as a 2800+ with no extra cooling and 100% stability.

Upping your multiplier instead of the FSB is always the most reliable way of doing it, I think it's a 12.5x multiplier for the 2800+.
