Has anybody got the new Tartan 2 disc release of In The Mood For Love.

Does it have the same transfer as the French one (ie 5.1 sound, optional subtitles etc). I have awful suspicion Tartan may have just bundled the old release with a new second disc of extras.

On the subject of Wong Kar-Wai, does anybody know what the UK R2 release of Chungking Express is like? Is it anamorphic and are the picture and sound quality any good.

Thanks.

I can't help with "In the mood..." cause I got the French version but UK R2 "Chungking Express" is fine. It's non-anamorphic 1.66:1 and mono with burnt in subs (which are very clear) but it's still the best I've seen it look on a home format. Get it! I'm pretty sure there isn't a better version yet.

I also have no idea about the new 2-disc set of ITMFL sorry.
Anyway, here's (http://www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com/article.php?sid=349) Bullets'n'Babes review of the ChungKing Express DVD. I think the cheapest place for ChungKing is Under£18 (http://www.under18.org.uk/index.cfm?tagbody=dvd), who do it for £10.99 delivered.

Thanks for the Chungking info, will get that disc soon.

As for In The Mood For Love if I don't hear anything about the Tartan release then I might just get the French one from Amazon.fr if my 50FF coupon from mtv.fr comes through.;)

I have 2-disc ITMFL on order from Play. It was due to be released today, but they are still awaiting delivery of stock. Hopefully, I'll have it by the weekend. If still relevant, I will post another reply in this thread. If not, I won't. :)

I don't think that clears thing sup as the reviewer states he is revieiwng the French edition but that the UK version has the same specs. It doesn't state anywhere that the UK version uses the same transfer.

I missed that. :o

I still think the first disc might be the old Tartan one as the review and both DVD Street & Play247 list all the soundtracks as Dolby 2.0 whereas in Michael Brookes review of the French version at Bulletsnbabes the Cantonese and Mandarin tracks are stated as being Dolby 5.1

It's the best version available right now and it's far from great. But it's still an improvement over the R0, the print is Ok with burned subtitles. I would go for it and hope for a decent release like In the Mood for Love in the next decade!

I bought this today and noticed that:

The film is on Disc 2 and

the extras are on Disc 1????

The box states the opposite.

Probably just my copy. Still.

The Disc labelled Disc 2 on mine has the film.

I was worried initially when I put Disc 1 in and couldn't find the film!!

The transfer is very good. Anamorphic and clean. It's on par with lots of other non-superbit R1 DVDs I have.

Well presented disc which fits the mood of the film very well.

If the Froggy R2 version is better then it really must be superb!!

One thing I did notice though:

Hasn't Maggie Cheung aged badly?!!!

Given that both the French release and UK Tartan release have the film on disc2, they are more than likely identical.

The French are weird to put the film on the 2nd disc though, is that normal in France ?.

The French has a film disc and a 'les supplements' disc. They aren't numbered but the film is on the first disc in the foldout set (so disc 1).

if you're getting mixed up with my previous post I was referring to From Dusk Till Dawn R1 2disc set which is like that.

anyways, sounds like Tartan done good - well, they did good to license everything (presumably anyway).

Hasn't Maggie Cheung aged badly?!!!
in my best John Cleese voice (Life of Brian) - Blasphemer!! :D

So which one to get French or UK ?
The French packaging looks better.
But is not knowing French a problem ?

Well the French has English Subs & the UK has English subs so there's no difference except the French release costs more.

I still cant get over Tartan putting the film on disc2.

:D

The only linguistic handicap with the French version comes with the accompanying booklet that explains the (pretty self-explanatory) DVD navigation.

Otherwise, as I said in my review, English speakers not only aren't at all disadvantaged, they actually get a better deal, with more English options than French ones!

So what is the definitive answer? Is the Tartan (bar the packaging) the same/as good as the French release in terms of the quality of the transfer and the extras?

Please someone tell me!:(
