An awesomly spec'd box with no good games is still a paper weight..

A bad console can be great if its games are fun.. Power isn't everything!!

Anyway.. the next playstation will dump on it!

The xbox has a great selection of games, even more so than PS2 imo. Sure, it was slow to get started, but with time to progress and the introduction of live it's without doubt the best console on the market at the moment.

Despite the fact that this info was posted on spong it seems that it is very much real. The fact that Spong say its rubbish actually backs that up since they always have absolutely no idea what they're talking about  The info first came from xbit labs website. Here is the block diagram of XBox 2:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/news/2004-04/xbox2_scheme_bg.gif

Some of the less obvious info shown here (like memory latencies) matches info that I had already heard from a developer.

Its unclear wether the above is the final system or the first version which was apparently initially set for a Christmas 2004 release. So the finished system may be slightly different.

The system is set for a mid 2005 release. Thought to be around 6 months before PS3 and N5.

but cmon three 3.5ghz cpu's jeeez

Its actually three identical CPU cores inside a single processor. Each core has its own 64k L1 cache and all three share a single 1MB L2 cache

:D

I'll probably be buying an Xbox 2 and a GC 2 in the next wave of consoles, I'm doubt I'm ever going to bother with a PlayStation again- they're crap.

I've just heard that apparently this document is indeed an earlier version of XBox 2. So the final version will differ, but the basic design will be the same.

Three identical cores, 64bit PowerPC at 3.5G+

Microsoft would not dare to use a cpu, that appears in apple computers, in their new XBox. If that happened I would change to l00nix. :suspect:

urm? hasn't ibm got the contract for the core cpu? and as its ibm they only do chips based on the powerpc architecture...so :D

IBM are on two a real winner, afaik as they fab the cpu for all three and the ati graphics core for xbox (and cube?)

It's been known for a while that m$ is using the 64bit PowerPC in the Xbox2.
Just curious as to whether those 3 processors will be running in parallel or independantly with regards to assgnments?

if independent, it would be a headache to code for and the lazy programming studios (most) wouldn't take advantage of it.

That said, as far as I am aware it won't be 3 individual CPU's but then again, I may be misinformed :D

Well, that'd depend on exactly how it's implemented and how good the m$ dev suites are.

Well it'll be 3 cores on 1 chip, which is something that IBM have been doing for a while now.

Not sure what I'll get yet. My heart says Nintendo.. but we'll see.

If the playstation 3 is like the one in that link I posted, I might get that tho!

From what I have read, early software is being developed on G5's. What type of L00nix do you want to run?

the switch to powerpc (well at least non intel arch) in the xbox is thought to be one of the reasons MS brought that virtual pc software maker.

Xbox2 will suffer big time if it can't run the previous ver's games.

IMHO Nintendo seem hell bent on self destruction. I sold my GC last year and if they want things to change then they need to bring in people with new ideas. Sack the board etc.

IMHO it's the new ideas that have sent them down the pan. They need to go down the Sony route of having an easily chippable machine that uses easy to duplicate media then bring out 50 games all sharing the same game engine but with different graphics.

What people need to remember is that Nintendo are competing with a company that are throwing money at the market to try to compete. Micosoft lost $1 billion on XBox last year alone. Within the same period Nintendo made a profit of half a billion dollars and expect to make a $1 billion profit this year. When you consider that Nintendo are making such profits and still selling more consoles then a company who are losing billions its actually quite impressive. It certainly doesn't match a description of self destructing or going down the pan now does it....

Obviously if Nintendo are to really challenge Sony then they do need to change things. But this idea that Nintendo are in trouble ATM is just so silly.

MS have just had their first week outselling the other two haven't they.:)

One thing to remember though MS have not 'lost' $1 billion, not to them. They have spent the $$ on becoming a brand in the living room, on becoming (subject to opinion) the best console to have, building developer relations. MS also has a unimaginable cashpile, the EU fine means naff all to them finanically, they can just treat it as a tax of doing business in the EU, ok a billion is a slightly bigger dent...but its a calculated loss. Personally I think they will come out ok, their Live service is unmatched, and without competition, and that will be a big plus in the fight.

I'll be happy if all three make great next gen machines that are cheap very quickly and have awesome games.
