Anyone else playing city of heroes on PC?
So annoyed that I did not get accepted for the beta.
I don't really want to buy it as I just started playing Eve. Hopefully they will release a free trial.
For anyone who has played it, is it good? How does it work? Are there levels or skills, is it just in a city, what kind of monsters are there, are there missions? etc etc...

I played the beta for a couple of weeks and enjoyed it overall.
The character creation is the best I've seen in any game and you can design your character any way you want. The graphics are great as well, lots of colour and cool designs.
It's a fairly basic game - easy to pick up and play for those with little experience of MMORPG, it would be a good starter game for those interested in the genre.
The combat system is good, lots of neat specials and powers. It feels more of a team beat em up at times than a RPG.
I wouldn't recommend it if you like to play solo, it has a heavy team slant to it.
The monsters are poor, a lot of generic thugs and unispired enemies. The missions are like every other MMORPG - get mission for contact, kill boss and return to contact and repeat, it gets repitive quickly and the dungeons are all very similar.
The game suffers from very little lag and is one of the most bug free betas I've played.
My favourite feature is when you have a player on your team who is much lower than everyone else, they act as a sidekick to the superheroes.
The biggest problems are a severe lack of content right now - nothing to do apart from missions, no crafting whatsoever and no PVP at the moment. There is also no merchanting to speak of and there's no economy - no loot from missions, as you're a superhero there's no armour, weapons or equipment to buy - you just allocate skill points to reach the next special. The game is just a levelling treadmill right now with nothing else to do.
I would recommend holding off buying the game right now, wait until more content is added and for the "City Of Villains" expansion which will have PVP and pit superheroes vs. supervillains.
This has gone live today!
You can purchase a CD key from the City Of Heroes site too! (shame I ordered one from the US really).
Works out at something like £27.
The site is <a href="http://www.plaync.com/store/coh_purchase.html">here</a>.
Well worth a play if you ask me. Not as hardcore as other MMORPG's, but enormous fun.
Oh i am such an idiot.
I forgot to check my emails, i had a beta invitation on the 20th.....I only just saw it today, a bit late! Argh!
I blame NCsoft for having such a short beta!
There is a great thread here http://fohguild.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=11322&perpage=15&pagenumber=1
Full of funny screenshots, I really want to get this now, but it is only out in America :(
It is a shame they don't allow you to buy the games (with a cdkey) and download it.

Where can I buy a cdkey from? That url just has links to online shops.
Nevermind! I logged into my PlayNC account and there was an option to buy a serial and download the client, looks like I will be palying this tonight :)
Apparently the unoffical EU server is "Victory"
Anyone else playing this? Waht server are you on?
I'm playing on Guardian, because that was supposedly the EU server for the Beta.
My main character is up to level 10 now, the game's good fun (the most fun I've ever had with an mmorpg).
There are some interesting things coming in a future patch too, such as instanced rooftop fights (instanced being a closed section which only your group exists in).
Plus there's the upcoming City Of Villains expansion, which is supposed to introduce lairs (for villains) and other things.
Ok I made a character on Guardian, I am a lvl 6 blaster. I'm having fun so far.
Although I am thinking that maybe I should have not picked fire for both my schools, they seem to all do the same thing, but it would be nice to have some different animations, oh well :)
Is there any particular profession that is more needed than others? Because there seem to be ALOT of blasters about :)
I hit lvl 6 and got asked if I wanted to train a new school, I wanted to get hover which would lead onto flight, I clicked it but I made the mistake of thinking I could pick 2 skills so I also clicked another one after, anyway I did not get hover.....
I went for flying kick when I got to level 6, then picked Combat Jumping when I get my second pool power.
The nice thing is, you get so many character slots that you can have as many characters as you like on the go. If you get bored with the blaster and want a change, make a controller or something :)
I've found that blasters and melee fighters are good for soloing, but its handy to have the others in a group. I'm thinking of starting a Supergroup at some point, so I'll let you know if I do.

Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.
I am up to lvl 8 now. I am enjoying it but I can see myself getting bored within a few weeks.
However I am going to try to pace myself because I do this with every game, I play it non stop for hours and hours on end and then I get burnt out and don't want to play it anymore.
It is alot of fun and I just got hover so I look forward to flying about
Hopefully this upcoming patch will make the missions a bit more interesting :)
Massively Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game.
Strictly speaking there have only been a few true MMORPG's released.
City of Hero's like most the other online "games" out there is purely a Massively Multi-Player Online Game. Or MMOG.
What is a supergroup? Is it like a guild?
I am lvl 9 now

Along with my regular group of online playing friends we enjoy that game quite a bit right now. It's fun, fast paced, low on aggravation and high on the wow effect.
We hope the devs will deliver on their promises for added content to keep the game fresh (even though we haven't come close to seeing it all though).
If anyone is thinking of playing a Controller, I highly recommend reading Sinda's Controller Guide (http://www.just-rpg.com/default.asp?pid=1062) on JustRPG. It's been written by a member of our Supergroup (i.e. guild for those who don't play CoH) and is quite exhaustive. It also gives some good info on how enhancements work (of interest to all archetypes/classes).
If you see Angeline, Precious or Surgeon on Guardian, that's me. :)
Wendelius
I am now lvl 10 :)
I was just in a group with a total idiot, he must have been 10, constantly using caps lock and swearing at people, and juts saying stupid things. We had a really good team but they all left after we got wiped out but I have a feeling he was a part of that too.
My name is Moltarr incase anyone wants to say hello, but now I must go to university and won't be back untill Friday.

Just created an account over there and see the option to purchase the key and the client for $49.99
is this all I will need to get playing or will I also still need to purchase the game
Bapapapa

Well, once you buy the code and download the client - you have bought the game - however I don't know if that includes a month's subs..
If not it works out quite expensive for the first month if you happen to not like it - $49.95 + $14.95 + VAT.. :gag:
Wendelius

Yes, that's how I purchased my game/account and it does include a free month.
You might also want to download the PDF format user's guide available on the web site as it contains lots of useful info for a change.
This is a superb and addictive game. Honestly, you haven't hunted with friends until you have been in a group of 6 superheroes unleashing fire, ice, wind and even cars onto the poor villains while a mad ninja slices them to bits with his sword and a shotgun wielding robotic hero uses silly Terminator quotes. ;)
The character creation options and hero power possible combinations are really impressive.

Well, it's mandatory now for electronic purchases from Europe. To be honest, I don't remember for sure, but I'd think that there is indeed VAT.
As for City of Villains, it will certainly add another dimension to the game. Although there is still a bit of uncertainty as to how well the hero vs villain interaction will be integrated to the gameplay.
It's not the only thing in the works though. There are more zones, storylines, invasions, hero customisation options, ... coming our way.

Why on Earth would you want to create a 'Batman' character - he has absolutely no super powers.. :dork:
Thats ok, there are "technology" origins you can pick, and you get to use gadgets.
It really depends how how you want your character to be, some :dork: may think out their chracacter's origin, powers etc all before playing, for me I just picked what appealed to me and I will just continue to pick more powers based on what I think is best.
The only reason he is a mutant is because the random character maker gave him pointy ears and purple skin. I just put that down to drinking too much ribena.
I've created a supergroup called Industrial Might and Logic.
Anyone wanting to join can drop me an email in game, I'm The Mystic Ninja.

I am tempted myself, but I am put off by the lack of content
So where can i get hold of this?
Lack of content you say? I would say it is not lacking that much, there is quite a bit of variation between villians and superheroes and their powers, and there are story arcs that you can get caught up in while doing missions, it is a good game to pick up and play, it is quite simple but also fun.
You can get it from www.plaync.com . Make an account, then you can buy a serial online and then you will be given a link to dload it.
I just found out today that there is a monthly COH comic, subscribers get it for free every month in the post which is cool.....the only problem is that they only ship it to america, canada and mexico at the moment  .
Hopefully they will pull their finger out and send it to everyone else as well, I am sure comic shops here sell it so they should tell them to send it to us!

It's quite a laff (been playing all of 1 day now :D) but I'm not sure what there is beyond level grind at the mo. Good fun exploring the powers & enhancements you get at each level though
Managed to get my hover abilities now so I can sort of fly, although it's a bit pathetic :D Chucking iceballs at baddies and poncing about in my skintight costume is quite amusing though.
It does feel absolutely spot on in terms of graphics though - straight out of a Marvel comic :)

Glad you could join us, maybe we can poach more of the SWG folks :)
There is not much else to this game apart from grinding levels, but it somehow manages to stay fun, I guess because it is just very simple and you don't have to worry about armour and all that stuff, and it is very easy to pick up a group for a quick session or solo providing you are the right class.
I completed my first mission story arc today against the clockworks, I saved a family who had been taken hostage.
There is still alot to do, there are many zones I have yet to visit because they are just too dangerous at the moment, about the only thing you have to worry about is upgrading the enhancements.
Anyway we should all team up, I can always sidekick someone :)
Hope everyone is on Guardian, if not, go there before you level too much and you don't want to move :)
I did a suprizingly good mission with just me (blaster) and 2 controllers, every time something came into range they just messed them and we blasted them away at a leisurely pace, we even had a combo worked out, it was great! It made a nice change from being in a group of 8 people fighting an equal amount of mobs with too much going on to keep track.
On another note, I really like the engine, it seems much more responsive compared to SWG and EQ.
What is everyone's name/lvl/powersets?
I am: Moltarr/lvl 15/fire/fire/flight.
Still not managed to get back on this.
Saber - will you be on tonight? If so I'll get you sorted out with an invite for the supergroup, and you can invite everyone else in if you like.
I've got two characters : The Mystic Ninja, and Corporeus. Corporeus hasn't been used much yet, TMN is level 11 (nearly 12).
Remember folks - you can sidekick a lower level hero, so we should all be able to give forumites a leg up for a bit (sidekicking gives a level boost to the lower level player).
I will be on tonight, I would really like to be in an active supergroup with people on at the same time :) I joined some random supergroup a few days ago but no one ever talks or plays together so I will leave that.
so how much is the reg key then? and do you have to pay monthly after that? i.e final fantasy??

Yeah, I know what you mean. There are three of us in the group at the moment, a mate of mine (goes by the name of Atomium) and a mind controller called Delusions who we recruited. Atomium and Delusions are on fairly regularly. I'm trying to get on more than I do at the moment. Hopefully we'll get some forums interested and they can join up.

waiting for new Visa card then going to cancel SWG for this
Is there anywhere that I can go to look at how to build a charcter and skills, attributes and equipment that will be available
for instance can you have non-powered characters ? such as The Punisher and Batman
Also do you have weaknesses ? I remember playing old pen and paper RPG (DC Heroes I think) where the more weaknesses you had the more powers you could have
Duncan - there are no weaknesses for specific origins. There is an origin which desribes a highly skilled human, rather than a mutant or magician. To be honest, the origin is more about role playing than the game.
The class you select will have more of an effect on gameplay, whether you're a brawler or ranged fighter. Within that, you can select a specific power class (so swords, or a rifle, or energy blasts etc). Within that class you get more powers as you level.
Have a look under the game features bit on the main site for more of an idea.
lvl 16 now :D
I want to do the first task force mission which is for lvl 15s, but from what I have gathered the task force gets several missions that incraese in difficulty, and you can only do them once? anyway the point is....I am assuming it is important to do it together with a bunch of friends instead of random people....
Has anyone done a task force mission yet? Of course first we need to wait for them to be fixed.

Our group is looking at taking on a level 20+ one on Guardian. I'm still too low level for it myself but here is what the player organising the hunt posted about them:
The last patch was supposed to fix these things, and since they allegedly give very nice rewards (as well as great XP) I propose that we get together a strong group who can do a Task Force series of missions.
Basically, you get the assignment (more below) and you then must do a series of several missions which culminate in a confrontation with an arch-villain who drops something very special for everyone in the TF.
From what I heard in /broadcast this morning, there are still a few problems with not getting the final reward if you disco, but they are intermittent and unpredictable.
What we need is a good balanced team of blasters, controllers, healers and tankers/scrappers who can put in from 4 to 6 hours on Saturday to finish one entire TF arc. One player I visited with said that his team were all veterans of many other games and were using voice chat, but still took over 6 hours to finish one TF.
If that doesn't daunt you (and you know that once you start having fun, time will mean nothing), let's do this. I suggest that we form a team of 20-somethings at the designated time on Saturday and go to Independence Port, where "Sister Psyche" gives the 20+ TF mission assignments (fighting Freakshow).
Positron, in Steel Canyon, hands out the lower level 10+ missions but if we want the 6 hours invested to be worthwhile we ought to go for the 20-some missions, IMO.
One thing that I'm not sure of is whether they will give Task Force assignments if everyone in your group isn't at least the minimum level. I remember trying Positron once in a group of teens that had a level 7 SK'd, and Pos refused to talk to us. So I'd suggest that we try to get the group set up with a minimum of level 20 or better.
I think having a balanced group of friends is going to be very important, given the duration. You want to make sure that no-one drops out and that you can rely on your groupmates to not mess things up.
I wouldn't do one in a pick-up group and I wouldn't start 1 hour before bedtime. :)
Wendelius
Exactly, but I have not met anyone reliable yet, I want to do all the TF missions no matter what lvl they are for just to get all the stories.
There are some screenshots here of the new update: http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/city-of-heroes/519543p1.html
It says it might be on the test server by the end of next week, hopefully it won't be buggy and will appear on the normal servers promptly.
Some of the new bad guys looks  (clowns)
There don't often seem to be many people playing at the same time in my supergroup, and I find you don't tend to make friends that quickly in this game, I suppose because the teams usually don't last very long, so when you need reliable people to do a TF mission, it makes it a bit hard.
I almost bought this via the site a few days ago but then decided against it.
The main thing which made me change my mind was that it might not run so good with my gfx card. It's only a gf2! The site says this is the bare minimum, so i'm wondering if it would cope?
Plus how does it play? As in is it affected much by lag etc?
It probably would not run very well on a gf2, and it can be quite hard to fight well with lag, lets say under 3 seconds is ok.
Lvl 17 now, just finished the first TF mission, good exp, lots of missions though, we killed the clockwork king.

I'd be intrested to know how the content compares to SWG also.
It is much simpler, no armour, no weapons, no waiting for shuttles, no pvp (yet), but still manages to stay fun.

Yes there is - free month with the software. But it costs to buy the game obviously (whether you download it or buy it off the shelf).
Thats not a free trial as you have to buy the game first
Free trial means letting you play the game for free!
GreyJackal
31-05-2004, 18:05
Err....and that's different from SWG, EQ, DAOC....etc, how?
AFAIR only AO could be downloaded for no charge.
Eve, planetside, Horizons, AO, those have free trials that let you download the client (for free) and have a few days free.
For instance, when I tried eve, I was allowd to download the client and have 10 days for free, when i decided I wanted to keep playing it I had to pay an activation fee (same price as buying the game from a shop) so my account became a normal one (which had 1 month free) and then continue to pay the monthly subscription.
Having to buy the game and get a "free month" is not a free trial, all mmorpgs let you have a free month subscription, you still have to buy the actual game first though.

Most online games don't have a free trial when they launch, in fact almost none of them did.
Galaxies have only just introduced theirs, Horizons took a few months after launch. Eve haven't been offering theirs for long.
CoH doesn't need a free trial right now, because there's enough interest being created through positive press and word of mouth. Give it time, and I'm sure they'll offer some sort of trial (or invite a friend type system).

Ok, well I stopped playing COH for a bit, I hung up my blaster as soloing is not much fun for me.
I made an empathy defender, lvl 9 at the moment, thats ok.
I was having a look on the official site and there was a link to here: http://pc.ign.com/articles/522/522416p1.html?fromint=1
Seems like quite a major update considering it is free.
Hopefully it will be added soon, although I will probably be too low to play
I'm really loving this game. Lots of fun.
I'm on Infinity.
Maxx Tech - lvl 10 Blaster/Energy/Devices
and
Ton of Bricks - lvl 8 Tanker/Invuln/Strength
I was playing this again quite a lot over the weekend, and am still having fun.
I've managed to get my main character to level 12 now - been doing some soloing around Perez Park to get XP.
The update has been added to the test server apparently, this should mean its not far off going live :
2 New City Zones:
- Peregrine Island - This zone, north of Talos Island, is home to the secretive Portal Corporation. The company's tight-lipped attitude has recently led to concerns that their fledgling technology has somehow rendered the island dimensionally unstable.
- Rikti Crash Site - In this zone, the Rikti War still rages. Join the battle and keep Earth safe from the alien invaders.
New twists to missions:
- 5th Column Prison -When you're defeated in certain equipped 5th Column bases, you will have more to deal with than a hospital bill. The Column has learned how to override the city's emergency teleportation network, and they have no intention of letting you go free.
- Circle of Thorns Crystal Prison - Like the 5th Column, if you are defeated in selected lairs, the Circle of Thorns will have a big surprise in store for you.
- Circle of Thorns Gate Room - The Circle has found a new method of protecting its dark secrets: the Gate Room. This room summons forth hordes of Circle Behemoths to threaten any invaders.
- Circle of Thorns Orichalchum Crystals - Magic can bring power, or magic can bring pain. These crystals have become infused with the Circle's dark magic, and heroes will often find themselves surprised by the results.
- Tech Danger Lab - Technology can be somewhat unreliable. The only way to find out what the Tech Danger Lab holds is to experiment and observe the results.
Outdoor Mission Maps:
- The villains of Paragon City have taken the fight to the streets. Battle your foes in instanced outdoor missions within the city itself, or journey to bizarre alternate worlds and spread justice throughout the multiverse.
Contact\Mission\Story Arc Content For levels 40-50:
- The sick amusements of the Carnival of Shadows have turned deadly. Learn the source of their powers on your quest to save a single soul.
- Expose the darkness in Countess Crey's closets and bring her secrets to light at last.
- Begin to plumb the depths of the mysterious Malta Group, with a little help from a pair of super spies.
- Nemesis: How far will the Prussian Prince of Automatons go in his bid to conquer America? Find out, and put an end to his evil plans.
- As with many new technologies, Portal Corporation's advances involve great risks. Venture to alternate realities to keep Paragon City safe from the many hazards of the multiverse.
- Is there any hope for peace between the Rikti and Earth? Not if you don't keep your eye on the factions that have begun to splinter Rikti society.
- The Praetorian supervillains may well be the greatest threat your fair city has ever faced. Take the battle to their home dimension to keep Paragon City safe.
Trial Room:
- Sewer Trial Room - Deep within the sewer system, something is growing. Characters between levels 38 and 40 must battle the Hydra to keep it contained - but be sure to come prepared for a long, hard fight.
Tailor:
- Now your costume can change and evolve with your hero. At 3 locations within Paragon City, you can update your outfit - for a price.
- At levels 20, 30 and 40, you can earn extra costume slots by performing tasks for Icon's tailors. Now you can customize your look on a daily basis!
Trials:
- "The Hive" - The villains in The Hive (Hamidon, et al.) are now level 50, rather than level 40. The rewards have also been adjusted accordingly.
Yay, looks like update 2 is nearly ready to go live: http://www.cityofheroes.com/features_update.html
Capes at last! Hopefully these new zones will be for lower players as the last patch was for high levels.

Any tips on this ?
I have created numerous characters and have no trouble getting to level 8 but after that the game seems to get more difficult
Find it very difficult to solo most groups and those I can i get very little XP
Also as for grouping most do not want characters my level and when they do I do nodamage and get no XP

Not all classes are able to solo, blasters are good to solo because you can hover and blast away out of their range.
As for groups, there are plenty of groups of all levels so it should be easy to find a group as long as you are in the right zone for your level, you should not group with anyone 5 levels above or below you, although I try to stick to 3 because otherwise it is too hard for people below me to kill mobs on my mission and too easy for me (less exp) to kill theirs.

wheres the best place to purchase this from?
You can't buy it in Europe yet, so best to buy a key online from www.plaync.com and then download the client.

A few questions, because I'mvery interested in getting this, but I'm not sure that my laptop is up to it:-What's the minimum spec that will run it playably? (If that's a word). How big the the client to download? And if I let my subscription lapse, and then pick it up a bit later, will I lose hero's powers?

Client is 855mb. And I imagine you can let your sub lapse for a quite while before you would lose anything. I don't know of many mmorpg's that actively delete inactive characters

Would have loved to stayed in SWG but it's fundametnally broken, way to earlier to pass judgement on CoH but do like the desgin, ease of access and fun factors, got to level 10 now, all seems pretty straight forward and not too much in the way of politcs (No PK)

 Thinking about it this game is perfect for Shaft, he can make a hero called "The Mighty Tashman" and have the na-na na-na na-na-nana...TASHMAN theme music.
A lot of my guild play CoH now, can't say I have the time for it atm though.........
Made lvl 15 now, just over week in and enjoying it still
Noticed this in the shops yesterday, is it any good? Is it online only?

Don't remember it saying that on the box, that's a bit sneaky

It is online only. If you have any interest in superheroes at all (and probably even if you don't), I would recommend giving it a try. Since you get the first month of play free, it gives you time to decide whether you like the game before you start being billed to play it further.
The character creation is   and the gameplay has got that *ZAP!* *POW!* factor, making you feel like a superhero. So you should have fun creating your own hero with his own powers and playing him/her.
Where the game might or might not break down for you is when you reach the higher levels. It is quite different from other MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online RPG's) in that it's quite lightweight (no inventory to speak of) and centered on fun and fast battles. On the other hand, back when I played, it became very difficult to solo at level 20+, which didn't always suit me when I played at strange hours and my friends weren't online.
It has changed since I played so that might not even be such an issue anymore. Besides, if you can make a few friends as you go along, you should have lots of fun with the game for a while at least.
So I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. Not much of a risk and you might just have lots of fun.

MMORPG veterans take it for granted (that's how those persistant worlds are kept running and evolving) but it's true that it takes newcomers by surprise sometimes.
The first month is always free so it gives you time to decide whether you want to pay monthly to keep playing or not.
Some games like Horizons or Ryzom actually had the fee indicated on the box. Others, like EQ2, simply state something like "30 days subscription included, additional subscription fees apply thereafter" somewhere on the box.

My copy from amazon turned up today, can't play it till my new system arrives though :( bummer... good package though with a choice of ether a DVD or CD Rom install.
I'd echo what Wendelius said. I played for several months and it was excellent fun.
Don't get too hung up on paying a monthly sub - there are monthly content updates, at no extra charge, and they have to maintain lots of hardware to keep things up and running. The charge for CoH is actually very reasonable. It should state on the box that a monthly sub is required (eq2 does, swg does, and in a bit I'll be able to tell you if WoW does).
What is it with three letter acronyms for MMORPGS anyway? SWG, CoH, EQ2, EQL, Wow?

Add Earth and Beyond (E&B) and Saga of Ryzom (SoR) to your list. :)
Just happenstance though. Eve Online, Horizons, Anarchy Online (AO) and Asheron's Call (AC) don't conform to that rule. ;)
And yes, I've played all the above MMORPG's and more. I definitely need :help:

Actually it does say on the front of the box something about first month of play included, additional fees required etc.
Anyway been playing this for a week on the Defiant server and am having a great time  . Have joined a supergroup and everything. Reached lvl 15 with my main character an MA/SR Scrapper. It's gets a lot better when you get your major travel power (flying, teleport, super jump etc) at lvl 14, make moving around the city zones so much faster.

I've been playing this since release - and the EU beta before that. I can honestly say that it's the first MMORPG to intrigue me enough to play properly, and it has me completely hooked. I think I must have clocked more than 200 hours on the game (including the beta) and it hasn't bored me yet.

Hit level 20 last night, got my cape and second costume :D .
My character is called number9dream by the way. So anyway who is a similar level give me a shout if i'm on and we can team up maybe.
If anyones up for it we are taking down Lusca (Level 25, giant octopus monster thing) later, should be fun!
Game turned up today - have made a blaster (Lady Powerpants) and a Scrapper (Nitemare). Spent the afternoon getting to grips with it and worked Nitemare up to a measly level 4. Hope to be on this evening (5 til 9ish) if anyone wants to send me a tell.

This sounds an excellent game - its between this and WoW I think for the moment!
So is there a limit on how many characters you can create?

Got this game over the weekend and wondered if anyone is still playing it? If anyone fancies giving me a hand levelling up (Lardboy, blaster: currently at level 7) I'd be very grateful :)
I have a question to those that have played the euro version of COH, did you get a free comic every month? Were there euro servers or did you play on the US ones, or could you pick any server you liked or were you limited to only the euro ones?
COV looks really cool, I am slightly annoyed that there is not that much information about it considering it is coming out soonish, it would be nice if they released some detailed info on what new features, skills and stuff there are.

Euro subscribers don't get the monthly comic book that US subscribers get (European gamers get the shaft - big surprise there then). They are supposed to be making it available to Euro subscribers in an electronic format (which I assume will be a PDF).
I haven't had the option to play on non-Euro servers but I don't know if there are ways to make it.
As for CoV, I assume you've checked out the FAQ at http://www.cityofvillains.com/ or mooched around the forums on the CoH site? I think the beta has only been running for a week or two.

signed up for the 14-day trial period (found a link on gamespot) and i'm currently level 4. I'm playing as a "motorcycle" (leather jackt and jeans) mutant scrapper by the name of "The Motorcycle Man".
It's pretty fun once you get into it and it's always cool seeing other players and their own superhero creations.
I want to be able to change my clothes as advised by the trainer, but i noticed when i went into another city (steal city) to find the "Icon" shop (no idea where its loacted!)there were level 14 bad guys waiting so i thought it's best to head back instead and do more of the early missions.

The sale has been mentioned in the Bargain Forum but I just I'd point out here too that City of Heroes Deluxe is only £4.99 and City of Villians Deluxe only £14.99 over at Gameplay (http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/specialsale.asp?platform=PCS).
Having played the US CoH for several months when it came out I've decided to return to the world over men in tights and give the dark side a go and so I've ordered CoV. Is anyone here playing CoV at the moment? If so what are your thoughts? How does the gameplay of CoH/CoV hold up now post WoW? Whilst fun, it was quite simplistic from what I recall but I don't know what updates have been introduced over the last couple of years that may have changed this.

Is it a monthly subscription game? is COV an expansion pack or a seperate game entirely?
It is a monthly sub yup. CoV is seperate to buy but you only need the a single sub for both games.
I played on the US servers but quit when i started college. I might join again at some point tho.
