The Galaxies thread still seems to be sticking around, must be popular!

These kind of threads seem to be quite popular at the moment :)
Galaxies is quite fun, and the fact that its set in the Star Wars Universe is very cool. I'd also say that the enviroment is very true to the films, and immersive. There's a good amount to do, what with building up your characters, hunting creatures, doing missions, joining the rebelion or the empire doing missions for them (along with some 'themeparks', which are missions that follow on from another and usually end with nice items as a reward, plus meeting a few SW celebs), setting up a nice house, joining a guild, guild battles, pvp, etc, etc.
Personally, i don't think it's good enough to warrent years of gameplay, however there are plenty of people who do so is well worth taking a look at this game. Also, they update it reasonably regularly, with new items/armour/vehicles and they've recently added a new missions set on a ship in space which should be fun.
I also suggest you take a look at my thread from last week

But do people treat it as an RPG or is it more a... "I'm off to get my stats up, wanna come help" affair?
I'm not a big fan of star wars but Knights Of The Old Republic had me hoooooooooooooooooooooked... I just know that sometimes these kind of games turn into a hack and slash affair... :( and that is what concerns me... also heard that being a Newbie to the world is difficult... noone really offers to help.

As with all RPG's there is a certain amount of playing to level up your character, but then there's still alot of other fun RPG things to do. Crafting can be quite fun once you got to a highish skill level, and involves finding the right materials needed, and of a high quality. Then you could set up your own shop and sell your goods, and promote them in star ports and stuff. People also make guilds, and set up guild towns where you have your own house, etc. Then there are guild battles, where you attack an enemy factions town. They also go on large creature hunts together, to gain exp, but also for fun. I'd say there's a good amount of RPG stuff to do.
There are also 'Points of Interest' on every planet, and these are usually dungeon type levels, with plenty of enemies and rooms to explore. They also sometimes involve finding door keycodes and doing little tasks. The good thing about these is that due to difficulty of the enemies it forces people to do them as a group, and encourages team play.
It is abit tricky at first, and takes abit of getting used to, but most people are quite helpful, and there are usually people around with 'Helper' written above their character, so its never hard to find someone who you can ask newbie questions. Also, there's the SWG forums thread, with plenty of helpful people who you can ask for advice.

If you're looking for more of a role playing experience then create a character on the Chimaera server and get yourself to Mos Eisley cantina. There's a thriving role playing society there that places less importance on skill levelling.
If you're stuck at any point then send a tell to my character who is called Jinko Dash by typing "/t jinko hello". There are plenty of other forumites on that server who will help you out too.

Your character is saved on the game server for at least three months. You can cancel your sub and reactivate it with no problems. It's about £10 a month BTW.
I used to play Everquest... alot....
Now I never got to a great level, got bored quite easily, had a 52 rogue, 40ish enchanter and a few others... but I had a really good time getting there with all of them. I made friends, some in Real Life who I stay in touch with and some online. However the game has changed and its no longer a game you can drop in on ad play chat etc.. The playing populations average level has raised considerably up to the early 60s I would say and as such there are less people to go hang out with, group with, or join a guild with.
They can suck your life away, I lost count of the amount of times I played for 24 hour stretches, going into work on a monday morning with pale grey skin and black circles round my eyes. I have a friend whose relationship broke up over it, these games are hard to put down if you are in the middle of something.
If you are single, have time on your hands then go for it, or if you can put aside X amount of playing time a day or week then go for it.
There are a fair few games coming up, World of Warcraft seems to begenerating a fair amount of excitment and to be fair does look good, The Sigil games effort again looks pretty good and the people behind it have a history in this genre (being the guys that created EQ) also Dragon empires looks pretty cool too. I would stay away from Asherons Call tho and Dark Ages of Camelot...
