Bit sad to hear the mighty Orbital are going to call it a day, the good news is they're closing Sunday night at Glastonbury on the other stage with a greatest hits set which I reckon is going to be very very special indeed.

After 15 years working together as Orbital, Paul and Phil Hartnoll have announced that their forthcoming LP the “Blue Album” will be their last. Following the album’s release on 21st of June, Orbital will play Brixton Academy on 25th of June followed by their last ever English live show, closing the second stage on Sunday June 27th at Glastonbury.

With the album complete the band are turning their attention to their final show at Glastonbury. An appropriate venue for a farewell as it was here, exactly ten years before that Orbital delivered a live show that Q magazine listed as one of the fifty greatest live show of all time. “It’s nice to know that we’re finishing, it’s not many bands that do that. They tend to just fade away. And it’s nice to have our last gig at Glastonbury. It’s gonna be a party set, a best of Orbital. We’re not gonna sit there and try and promote the new album. I think if we’re gonna do a last gig we should do distilled set of all the best stuff we’ve done. And that’s what we’re gonna do, play all the stuff that’s stuck around for all this time because they are the favourite ones. This will definitely be our last ever live shows,” confirms Paul, “Although I’m sure Status Quo keep telling themselves the same thing.”

Just got Steve's e-mail from Loopz and I'm totally devastated.

Nice touch, however, to offer true fans the first grabbings on the Brixton tickets, but I really want to be there at their last real gig :(

They've promised a greatest hits set at Glasto, rather than stuff from the soon-come Blue Album.

Bet BBC only show edited highlights - let's hope someone records the whole thing for prosperity (an unedited DVD of the whole gig would be cool).

Mucho respect to P&P for calling time : far better to retire gracefully than fade away...

Very sad news. Their set in '94 was outstanding. Glad I'm gonna make Glastonbury.

Sad but glad they're calling it a day rather than fading away. They've largely been running on steam the last couple of albums (comparatively anyway).

Never got a chance to see Orbital. Wish I knew before I went and bought tickets for Download and V2004.

 for me too! Have seen them live three times though and they were absolutely brilliant gigs!

Hope the new album is a really great sign off. Didn't rate the last one much at all but adore all the others! Even have a couple of signed albums! :p

Neither did I.
It's a shame they're splitting though.

Their last album was poor by the very high standards of previous albums, but they will always be legends in my book.

I saw them live about the time that the 'The Box' single came out - superb. I'm sure many other Orbital fans have had some kind of spiritual experience listening to them. I know you can say that was the drugs you were taking, but I'm a dad in my thirties now and don't do class A's any more - I was listening to the 'Brown' album the other day - still absolute class.

We will miss you Orbital

I feel...emotional!

I too saw them around the time that 'The Box' single came out. It was at the Glasgow Barrowlands Sunday 12th May 1996 to be exact. Still got my gig ticket.

They were phenomenal live and incorporating a sample of Belinda Carlisle's 'Heaven Is A Place On Earth' into their set and making it sound amazing was nothing short of genius in my book.

I was probably the only person not on alternative medication at the gig and not one person out of the 2000 revellers weren't jigging. It's about as close to a rave as I'll ever get to.

I love going to gigs on a Sunday gets rid of that 'Oh it's Sunday and I know I've got work on Monday morning' type feeling.

Still think their 'Snivilisation' is maybe not their best work but it is my favourite album of theirs. I find it the most interesting and varied in terms of the sounds they managed to make on the album. It was also a very influential album in terms of my music listening tastes as they changed over night after listening to it for the 1st time as I wanted to hear more of the same.

'tis a shame they're splitting. :(

I caught some part of their set (the beginning) after Morrisey before Muse came on, then I turned off when then switched to Muse....I would have rather have watched Orbital full set :) I got all the old goosepimples on the back of the next hearing them

Great cock-up at the start of Doctor ? :D

Truly emotional - between them BBC3 and BBC2 covered six songs (about 45 minutes worth !) - Remind/The Girl.../One Perfect Sunrise/Impact/Doctor ?/Chime. I suspect they will have done You Lot from the Blue Album (they did at Brixton, if the Xfm coverage of Thursday's gig is anything to go by).

And, if you want to see the whole set - head over to Playlouder (http://www.playlouder.com), although last time I checked, they hadn't put the archived versions of Sunday's gigs up yet (check out the Goldfrapp gig too :D).

Just found this thread...

My Orbital claims to fame ...

1. You can hear my very distinctive drunken vodka fueled shouting inbetween tracks on the Queen Elizabeth Hall John Peel Session broadcast by Radio 1.
2. Got my Photo in 'Q' Magazine when Orbital played at the 'Q' awards
3. A couple of photo's I took are featured on the Official Orbital Website
4. A couple of photo's of me on the Offiical Orbital Website!
5. And I got to buy Steve from Loopz a beer ... a very nice chap he is too.

Didn't ever meet Phil or Paul - never meet your heros!

John Peel did a lot to give Orbital mainstream credibility ... thanks John.
