I think Murray Street is superb, never far from my cd player.

Didn't do anything for me although it was a step up for the previous offerings.

:nono:

If 1000 Leaves and NYC Ghosts & Flowers are too hardcore (to be fair that period is fairly pretentious) they seem to be returning from the avant-garde now - the first track of this new one sounds like something off Dirty!

Then again they're not far from cashing their pensions now

Hang on, I understood it (correct me if I'm wrong) there are two types of SY releases:

Geffen: 'normal' albums with songs on that anyone would listen to (e.g. Daydream Nation and Dirty).

Sonic Youth Recordings (sp?): Avant-garde madness that only musos will really get anything out of.

So is this album a latter type?

This is a proper SY album but the last few 'proper' albums were pretty out there anyway.

Not really - most of their recent DGC records could in no way be described as 'songs on that anyone would listen to' - not quite as leftfield as the SYR EPs though still probably enough to give the average grunge kiddie a brain haemorrhage :|

Having had the Royal Festival Hall gig for Goodbye 20th Century described to me, and then seeing them at Shepherd's Bush for the last album tour, I kind of got the impression that they were pretty different things.

But then I am into the sort of sounds SY tend to produce, I suppose, so I do consider them stuff anyone would listen to: There's a difference between arty and pretentious. It's a fine line, but generally pretentiousness is hard for most people to enjoy, in my experience. :)

Goodbye 20th Century is something else entirely as that consisted of interpretations of various canonical and obscure avant-garde compositions.

They seem to work on a dialectic between that sort of improvised noise (sometimes amazing and sometimes falls in the gap between arty and pretentious) and the classic rock format (eg their last record predominantly) so there is a huge variety of SY records. Just about everyone should find a few of their albums to like :)

It's out at the end of June.

Had a listen and was left very unimpressed. It's just a bland noise that drone on for an hour. No real songs as such just 6 to minute 'soundscapes' with rubbish lyrics over the top.

The days of Daydream nation seem so distant.... :(

Most people would describe Daydream Nation that way ;)

Just listened to Sonic Nurse......sounds quite like Washing Machine - darker and noisier than Murray Street. It seems to improve with duration - the last 3 tracks are excellent and Lee Renaldo's 'Paper Cut Exit' is especially so and 'I love Golden Blue' is highly reminiscent of A Thousand Leaves (a good thing)

After a few more listens I'll probably decide it's a minor masterpiece although it's not a record for people who consider 'noise' and 'drone' to be pejoratives :)

True but atleast they built the noise and drone around something resembling a melody on Daydream nation.

This is just sounds like Mogwai on half speed. (But if that floats yer boat...)

I can see (if not agree) with what you describe on most tracks - although 'Paper Cut Exit' reminds's me of Renaldo's Daydream Nation tracks eg Eric's Trip - which are some of the best SY songs.

Daydream Nation is jam-packed with melodies in my opinion, with "The Sprawl" being my personal favourite...

Well I'm listening to this now. While I'd agree with Mr. Stanton's lyrics over a drone point, I've actually really enjoyed the feeling of the album. Seems pretty good to me. :)
