His newest DVD (Sky High) is getting a standard (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=ASBY-2485) and special edition (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=ASBY-2484) release.

The latter will contain the director's cut...which is approx 10 mins longer.

Both will have English subs.

His newest movie is Godzilla: Final War (http://www.godzilla.co.jp/).

A Godzilla director will be directing Azumi 2. And now he's directing a Godzilla movie. I think this is cool. Also he seems to be making a ton of movies recently...like Takashi Miike.

Edit: The director's cut of Sky High does NOT include English (or any) subtitles. Only the theatrical cut has English subtitles.

We've managed to take a detailed look at the Japanese Sky High Special Edition release here (http://www.dvddebate.com/modules.php?name=AllNews&op=onecolumnnews&column=World News#Sky High Special Edition - Japanese Region 2 Review).

Snippet:
Sky High is most likely Kitamura’s weakest movie to date, but in all honesty is still thoroughly enjoyable, especially if you adore this fanatical guy’s works. Basically he tries to squeeze too much of everything into one movie and leaves no room for the plot. The concepts are fascinating, composing of an urban spiritual tale but the screen is also bursting with youthful colourful energy. It is similar to Mortal Kombat, but not nearly as deep or philosophical. :D The easily amused and those who cannot perceive a flaw with any Kitamura movie will feel right at home.

For your hard earned cash however, you are essentially paying for a sophisticated audio and visual experience and nothing else. The inclusion of the minimal extras and director’s cut of the film cannot warrant a price tag of such magnitude. There is a second cheaper release of Sky High, which just has the theatrical cut. Unless you are a collector or can understand Japanese, I would really urge you to purchase the standard edition as opposed to this one.

Any thoughts on the TV series it's apparently based on. I believe there are 2 DVD releases of those and I saw another 2-Disc edition, which does not appear to be the movie, but it's twice as much as the special edition... very confusing stuff

Apparently the TV series is very good, but unfortunately the Japanese releases have no subtitles.

Yumiko Shaku who plays Mina in the Sky High movie, plays the same character in the series as well (AFAIK). She's also in Princess Blade.

I wanna watch the series at some point... hmm... :( :(
