View Full Version : Euro 2004 Prediction Competition ** Discuss ??
Mr Dubby

I don't want to assume that this will be left for me to organise and administer so I thought I'd broach the subject a little early to see if anyone had specifically planned anything or had begun to think about starting an 'Enter Here' or 'Discuss' thread?
Anyone have any great desire to 'host' this comp ? JohnMac, I know you've hosted before, morleyian ? others who host similar comps elsewhere?
With Euro 2004 it's quite nice to be able to see all the fixtures so far in advance and therefore plan the format of a competition.
So;
Straight forward prediction comp?
Knockout Basis?
League Basis then knockout?
Prizes; £10 web payments/DVD or website vouchers/Promise to purchases
around 60 days to go until the tournament so time to start I think :searchme:
Regardless of who runs the comp it might be a good idea for those who want to just say "count me in" that they also do so by email - so I've set up a yahoo address so that when the comp starts proper whoever is running it can send out mail en block to remind those who were interested. - register on this thread and by email please to forumsfootballeuro@yahoo.co.uk

I would say pay up front to be stored in someone's paypal account *ahem* :D until the end of the competition. Seriously though, will give it some thought and report back to this thread at a later date.

I would be up for running it, if noone else wants to.
The straight forward prediction league sounds good to me. While the FA Cup comp has been fun and different it has still left a lot of people with nothing to play for when they've got knocked out early, like me who lost in the first round.
I like the prize suggestion and I can chuck in a few bonus DVD's as well for some mini comps or something.

def up for it, could possibly run it as a last resort (rather someone who could do a good job did it mind:P)
prefer the straight forward predicition, not sure how the FACupesque would work (4 groups of 4, each prediciting through the group stages against each other, top two progress to knockout? - if that makes sense)
Prize wise, sounds fine.
EDIT:
Group wise could work. need 16 people per group tho, which could be a problem. Thinking each player gets a team, and scores both against those who have the other teams in his group (in a mini table) and obviously for a larger table. Then top two in each group going through, predicting against appropriate opponent (ie, say winner of first group plays runner up of 2nd)
Prize could be split evenly, £80 for the group and £80 for the overall prize, so the bigger league has a bigger prize fund than the group

I'm defo up for this. How about this scoring system :
2 points for correct outcome
1 point for correct number of goals for home team
1 point for correct number of goals for the away team
2 bonus points if you get the score completely correct
(i.e.) If actual score is 3:1
Prediction 1:0 = 2 points
Prediction 1:1 = 1 point
Prediction 1:3 = 0 points
Prediction 2:1 = 3 points
Prediction 3:1 = 6 points
Just a suggestion
We could also have as a bonus - Pick three teams :
If one of your teams wins Final = 15 points
If one of your teams loses Final = 10 points
If one of your teams loses Semi = 5 points
A maximum bonus of 30 points. :luv:

think we should keep scoring the same tbh, maybe have half time scores coming into play for the later rounds (not that many matches is there? i make it 19 matches (20 if 3rd/4th which i'm sure there isnt)???)

I just thought my scoring system rewarded you for correctly predicting the number of goals a team will score, whereas the present system with the overall number on goals scored is a bit of a lottery.
You shouldn't get any points for predicting 4-0 when the game finishes 0-4. ;)

You know what? You're right and I've just amended the Premiership Prediction comp to take into account your grievance.
Sadly this means that you are no longer in 9 place but 39th !! :p
(Goals scored pointage was only introduced so as to keep you interested in a match - for example if you'd siad tonight that Leeds would win 4-0...when Arsenal were 3-0 up it gave you reason to shout for anyone else to score regardless of losing the outcome points)
To be honest, the simpler you keep the scoring system the better - maybe don't score anything but the predictions of outcomes and correct scores, forget the goals - will make it stay a lot lot closer as there are not so many games to be played
2 for a score
1 for and outcome perhaps - keep it tight
or
3 Full time
2 outcome
1 half time
Something similar to the World cup Cricket whereby it was so many for the outcome and so many points for losing sides score - just two eventualities to predict i.e. not complicated

God if we're going to be complicated then it should be 1 extra point for a striker, two for a midfielder, 3 for a defender and 10 for a keeper. :p

After thinking about it some more I think the main comp should be like the premiership competition.
We could have a mini league as a bonus competition running in conjuction with the main prediction comp. Keep it to the same format as the Euros themselves. As long as we get at least 32 entrants it should work - 8 groups with the top 2 progressing to the knockout stage (if we have more than 32 players, still keep the 8 groups but have more than 4 teams in a group). I can provide some DVD's for the winner of the mini league.
Should the scoring be the same as the premier comp? A lot of Euro/World Cup games tend to be 0-0, 1-0 scorelines, so maybe the bonus of getting the correct result shouldn't be so high?

Predicting the scores is the hardest part I think (Portsmouth 1-0 Man Utd anyone? oh just me then :p )
The email address is now working - Yahoo database was down

How about this for a scoring system..
Correct Score: 3 points
Correct Outcome: 2 points
Predict Group Winners (prior to tournament start) 1 pts for each correct
Predict Semi Finalists: 2 points for each correct
Predict Finalists: 3 points for each correct
Predict Tournament Winners: 10 points
The main comp should be therefore very close.
Entry Stake at £10 - maybe set up a Prize Account in advance to ensure that those who play - pay.
Unlimited no of entrants
????
Sound good to me MrD

3 pts for a correct score yet you get 2 for an outcome. Big difference from the Premiership comp with 2 pts extra up for grabs with a spot-on scoreline. I say stick with the 5 (or at least 4) & 2 points system therefore

 I did actually mean 5 for a spot on score a la Premiership comp!! Why I put two?

You didn't put 2 though you put 3  So 5 for a scoreline and 2 for outcome then?
I like 3 for a correct score. There are fewer games invovled in this comp compared to the premiership comp. and you want everyone to have an interest for as long as possible, but with the 5 for a correct score you could have someone sprinting away. IMHO the difference between 5 points and 2 points (I know it's 3 ;) ) is too big for a competition this size.
Also the points for nominating the stage winners/reps. I would change. With Mr D's, you get more points for guessing the 4 semi finalists than you do the 2 finalists. I would just tweak the scoring so that
Predict Group Winners (prior to tournament start) 2 pts for each correct (Total poss - 8 points)
Predict Semi Finalists: 2 points for each correct (Total poss - 8pts)
Predict Finalists: 4 points for each correct (Total poss - 8pts)
Predict Tournament Winners: 10 points

So perhaps 4 & 2 or 3 & 1 then ?

I purposely kept these points a bit lower because someone might just get lucky and clean up on the predicting GW SF F and Winners alone. Maybe even lower than the points I suggested. Keeping the emphasis on the scores prediction rather than anything else :searchme:
Anyway - this doesn't seem to be attracting much interest really !

Surely everyone in the Premier Prediction Compo would join up

i'll go by what ever score system you decide on mr dubby sir.
I also may have some dvds that could be donated to a prize doodah, nothing special, but better than a kick in the nads.

I like the idea of the 4 & 2 popints suggestion, but think that predicting the S/F, Finalsts and Winner should be less points.

I'll not be as I am on holiday from the day of the first quarter final until after the final and I'm not going to leave a default 2-1 scoreline or anything like.
Certainly not planning on being anywhere near a PC either.

I think plenty will join sooner to the time.
I like 4 & 2.
And 2 points for group winners, and semi finalists.
I'd have 2 points also for finalists and winners.
8 points for first round.
8 points for semifinalists.
4 points for finalist.
2 points for winners.
Most people will make obviously similar predictions so it will be difficult to gain a massive points advantage.

Ok about time this started - so I think if we say
4 for a spot on prediction
2 for a correct outcome
Start of tournament predictions (to be predicted before start of tournament)
1 point for each group winner named
2 pts for each semi finalist named
3 pts for each finalist named
Any more thoughts or shall I knock up a thread and get this under way?
