Evenin' all,

I'm getting ADSL 512k broadband finally in 1-2 weeks and at present have just a basic USB modem ordered which I was going to plug into my PC via a long cable and then crossover cable to my Xbox through an Ethernet card (I think I've got the terminology right here).

However I've still got my heart set on going wireless to avoid the long lead. Can you tell me what the cheapest compatible kit would be to plug into my phone socket, wirelessly send data up the stairs and then into my Xbox/PC? I don't mind whether the PC and Xbox need to be on at the same time, whether only one can be plugged in at once or anything else - I just want to be able to spend as little money on compatible hardware as possible, play at least either Xbox Live or use the internet on my PC once at a time and not have a wire trailing up my stairs!

Just the most basic, cheapest and compatible kit even if it means a bit of graft to get it working..

Many thanks - any advice is appreciated,

Lee (Schnide)

Search would be good for you.
There have been 000,s of similar questions recently. There is some useful info on http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/support/live/

I did search and I've been to that page already but nowhere's specific enough. I am willing to take the time to research this whole thing and learn more but I'm otherwise a complete newbie and have to have the equipment ordered really soon.

I was hoping someone would be able to say "yes, Kit X is a cheapful bundle of kit you could get which is under £100 and Xbox Live compatible" so I could have it ordered..

I'm not being ignorant, I just can't tell my router from my .802 wifi adapter or.. (I think that should show how just how little I know when I can't even make a decent joke out of it!)

Okay, let me try this another way. If I bought:

http://*******.com/2d7f4
Wireless IEEE 802.11b access point

and

http://*******.com/2yc9h
PCI Wireless Network Card 11Mbps (1) WK4

Could I plug the first item into my ADSL socket downstairs, plus fit the second item inside my PC and then crossover cable the card to my Xbox and use it for Live? Any reasons why not (preferably in English)?

I do apologise for my ignorance but try as I might there's no answer I can find for my questions..

No idea if this is a dead issue as it's so old, but I'm currently thinking about the same thing (though I don't have an xbox yet)

Schnide, from my understanding you'd need an adsl modem/router instead of that access point (couldn't find any on that website)

Because my adsl point is upstairs and the tv (and soon to be xbox) are downstairs I was looking at the Netgear DG834G as the modem/router (silly price though), wireless card for the pc, then I'd need an access point downstairs to plug the console into.

Pretty much cablefree (although people suggest ethernet between router and pc as a backup)

Still deciding on brands though as although the dg834g seems highly recommended it's a bit pricey at ~£100 so looking for comparisons with the Buffalo stuff.

Cheapest 11b modem/router I could find was <a href="http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=53163" target="new_window">a belkin<a/> @£38

I just went mad today, Netgear DG834G, WGE101 and two WG311 cards, £240 spent in seconds :)

Going to trawl the xbox bargain thread to see if anyone's found a local sainsbury selling one, else if off to amazon and pick up one of the crystals for another £135.

Spending money is so therapeutic :)
